Robustness of Entanglement as a Resource

The robustness of multipartite entanglement of systems undergoing decoherence is of central importance to the area of quantum information. Its characterization depends however on the measure used to quantify entanglement and on how one partitions the system. Here we show that the unambiguous assessment of the robustness of multipartite entanglement is obtained by considering the loss of functionality in terms of two communication tasks, namely the splitting of information between many parties and the teleportation of states.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure

A computationally efficient method for calculating the maximum conductance of disordered networks: Application to 1-dimensional conductors

Random networks of carbon nanotubes and metallic nanowires have shown to be very useful in the production of transparent, conducting films. The electronic transport on the film depends considerably on the network properties, and on the inter-wire coupling. Here we present a simple, computationally efficient method for the calculation of conductance on random nanostructured networks. The method is implemented on metallic nanowire networks, which are described within a single-orbital tight binding Hamiltonian, and the conductance is calculated with the Kubo formula. We show how the network conductance depends on the average number of connections per wire, and on the number of wires connected to the electrodes. We also show the effect of the inter-/intra-wire hopping ratio on the conductance through the network. Furthermore, we argue that this type of calculation is easily extendable to account for the upper conductivity of realistic films spanned by tunneling networks. When compared to experimental measurements, this quantity provides a clear indication of how much room is available for improving the film conductivity.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

Fluctuating Dimension in a Discrete Model for Quantum Gravity Based on the Spectral Principle

The spectral principle of Connes and Chamseddine is used as a starting point to define a discrete model for Euclidean quantum gravity. Instead of summing over ordinary geometries, we consider the sum over generalized geometries where topology, metric and dimension can fluctuate. The model describes the geometry of spaces with a countable number nn of points, and is related to the Gaussian unitary ensemble of Hermitian matrices. We show that this simple model has two phases. The expectation value ,theaveragenumberofpointsintheuniverse, isfiniteinonephaseanddivergesintheother.Wecomputethecriticalpointaswellasthecriticalexponentof, the average number of points in the universe, is finite in one phase and diverges in the other. We compute the critical point as well as the critical exponent of . Moreover, the space-time dimension δ\delta is a dynamical observable in our model, and plays the role of an order parameter. The computation of is discussed and an upper bound is found, <2 < 2.Comment: 10 pages, no figures. Third version: This new version emphasizes the spectral principle rather than the spectral action. Title has been changed accordingly. We also reformulated the computation of the dimension, and added a new reference. To appear in Physical Review Letter

Determination and fractionation of barium in Brazil nuts

Several sample preparation strategies were employed for determination and fractionation of barium in Brazil nuts using measurements by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF AAS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry with axial view (ICP OES). This food is widely consumed because of its nutritional value and good taste. The chemical analysis of Brazil nuts is not trivial due to their complex matrix. The fractionation of barium in Brazil nuts was studied owing to the toxicity of this element and the strong correlation between chemical form and absorption. Total concentrations of barium varied from 860 to 2084 mg kg-1. Sequential extractions were performed based on solubility in different media and also according to lipids, proteins and low molecular weight fractions (LMW). The greatest contents of barium were determined in the LMW and in the water insoluble fractions with concentrations in the range 778 to 1606 and 551 to 1520 mg kg-1, respectively. Based on these results it can be inferred that Ba is not absorbed when Brazil nuts are ingested. Considering both the contents of barium and sulfur in different fractions and stoichiometric calculations it was also possible to assume that barium occurs mainly in the BaSO4 form. The presence of this chemical form was also confirmed by thermogravimetric measurements.

Effect of particle size distribution and calcium aluminate cement on the rheological behaviour of all-alumina refractory castables

    Get PDF
Previous works based on statistical design of experiments (DoE) defined a model all-alumina self-flow refractory castable (SFRC) with optimized particle size distribution for simultaneous high flowability index (FI) and superior post-sintering performance. This work compares the SFRC rheological behaviour and setting time with those of alternative all-alumina castables with different Andreasen aggregate particle size distribution modulus, and of the equivalent castables containing calcium aluminate cement. The model castable showed Bingham behaviour with low yield stress, viscosity and thixotropy, guaranteeing easier casting and less wear in the casting and/or projection equipment. However, as the coarse particle fraction increases, the castable flow tends to be non-linear and changes from Bingham to Herschel–Bulkley. The cement containing castables quickly loose flowability despite the applied shear. This work confirmed previous conclusions based on FI measurements and demonstrates the adequacy of the use of FI values in the calculation of FI response surface by DoE.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
