Modelling the squeeze flow in a deformed rectangular microchannel

From the experimental results it is impossible to decouple the fluid contribu?on from the solid contribu?on to the force?me response of the composite. In this work, we have developed a simple model of the fluid-flow dynamics that it is able to predict the fluid contribu?on in the energy dissipa?on of the Rheinforce cork composites under impact loads. To that end, we model the viscous flow inside a microchannel for a known displacement of the upper lid h(t, x), calcula?ng as a result the needed force to create that movement

Automating the Horae: boundary-work in the age of computers

This paper describes the intense software filtering that has allowed the arXiv e-print repository to sort and process large numbers of submissions with minimal human intervention, making it one of the most important and influential cases of open access repositories to date. The paper narrates arXiv’s transformation, using sophisticated sorting/filtering algorithms to decrease human workload, from a small mailing list used by a few hundred researchers to a site that processes thousands of papers per month. However there are significant negative consequences for authors who have been filtered out of arXiv’s main categories. There is thus a continued need to check and balance arXiv’s boundaries, based in the essential tension between stability and innovation

Molecular detector (non)technology in Mexico

This paper discusses the introduction of fraudulent “molecular detector” (non)technology into Mexico. The case is used to argue that contemporary science and technology studies’ approaches to scientific policy-making make basic assumptions about the societies they operate in that are inconsistent with the Mexican context. This paper also argues that contrary to what happens in the so-called Global North, the relative power of Mexican science in government and policy circles is as much limited by its relatively weak position as much as it is by self-censorship and unrealized impact in the country’s fragile democracy. The case is also used to highlight the necessity for more politically involved scientific institutions in Mexico, as these become critical safeguards against incoming destabilizing technologies from more powerful nations into the local “peripheral” context

El 13 de julio de 1556 moría Philibert de Rye, obispo de Ginebra. Un grupo de eruditos relacionados con la Univer sidad de Dola, le tributó un homenaje literario, entre cuyos textos destacamos una elegía dialogada, desarrolla da en dísticos elegiacos, obra del humanista Antonio Llull, texto que no recoge ninguno de los repertorios de la producción de este tratadista mallorquín. El consumo de energía y la economía mexicana. un análisis empírico con VAR

The main objective of this study is to analyze the relationships between consumption of energy, output, relative prices of energy and employment in Mexico over the period 1965-2001. The main results indicate that there is at least one cointegrating vector implying one longterm stable relationship between energy consumption, output, relative prices and employment. This cointegrating vector, which was obtained by the Johansen (1988) procedure and corrected for possible structural changes using the method proposed by Hansen and Johansen (1993), has coefficients that can be interpreted according to the economic theory as a demand function and that suggest energy and employment are substitute goods. The weak exogeneity tests show the existence of a close relationship between consumption of energy and output, meanwhile the relative prices and employment are weak exogenous. The Granger non-causality tests indicate a bi-directional relationship between the changes of output and energy consumption and the presence of a complex feedback process between all the variables included in the analysis that must be considered in order to design an energy control public policy. In this sense, the simultaneous movements among energy, income and employment suggest that any energy control policy might also influence the trajectory of output and employment.energy, output, employment, causality

Postpartum Relapse in Patients with Bipolar Disorder

Pregnancy and postpartum are vital times of greater vulnerability to suffer a decompensation of bipolar disorder (BD). Methods: A systematic literature search was performed on public electronic medical databases, following PRISMA guidelines. Studies were included if they reported postpartum relapse in patients diagnosed with BD according to Diagnosis Statistical Manual (DSM) or International Classification Disease (ICD) criteria. Results: Sixteen articles describing 6064 deliveries of 3977 women were included in the quantitative analyses. The overall risk of postpartum relapse was 36.77%. The methodology of the studies, the diagnostic criteria, the discrimination between BD type I and II, and the origin of the sample were very heterogeneous. Conclusions: the rate of postpartum bipolar relapse is very high, as it is considered to be a critical period. It is especially important to detect decompensation in this period and to evaluate mood-stabilizing treatment, given the high risk of relapse concentrated in a short period.Spanish Ministry of Health through the Carlos III Health Institute (Health Research Projects of the Strategic Action in Health) PI21/0125
