    Tanzanian men’s gender attitudes, HIV knowledge, and risk behaviours

    This study uses data from the 2004-05 Tanzanian Demographic and Health Survey to examine whether men’s traditional gender role attitudes contribute to their sexual risk behaviours for HIV.   Logistic regression with random effects were used to analyze effects on risk behaviours at last sex (partners being drunk and condom use) with the three most recent sexual relationships.  Men’s traditional gender attitudes increased risky sexual behaviours (e.g., not using a condom) even when they had accurate knowledge regarding HIV risks.  The impact of men’s gender attitudes and HIV knowledge on risky sexual behaviours did not vary by relationship type.  Unexpectedly, condom use was more likely when either partner was drunk compared to neither being drunk, though the protective impact of HIV knowledge remained.  Overall, these findings suggest that traditional gender attitudes present barriers to preventing HIV/AIDS that even increased knowledge about HIV risks may not overcome. 

    Protective indigenous collective value of Ubuntu and child neglect: Implications for rural child protection practice

    Theories on collective efficacy and social support suggest that indigenous values that support collective practices and sanction community obligations to childcare would be protective against child neglect. Likewise, new qualitative findings show that collective values are stronger in rural areas than in urban. This study tested the claims that the value of Ubuntu, which is a symbolic cultural value of ‘being for others’, will be protective against the likelihood of neglect; this relationship will be stronger in rural compared with urban communities in Ghana. Using data obtained from a nationally representative sample of 1100 mothers (from 22 communities) in Ghana, we tested the claims using fixed effects logistic regression. The Ubuntu norms were significantly endorsed in rural communities compared with the urban. The overall model showed that higher levels of Ubuntu are associated with lower odds of child neglect (OR.47, [.29,.76] p \u3c 0.05), and the relationship remained significant only in the rural sample (OR.13, [.06,.31] p \u3c 0.001). Similar evidence was recorded for the Ubuntu norms of community care and compassion. The results suggest that child protection in rural Ghana can be fruitful when interventions are developed to boost the value of Ubuntu and the norms of collective childcare

    Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation for improving peripheral nerve health: Protocol for a systematic review

    Introduction Damage to peripheral nerves occurs in a variety of health conditions. Preserving nerve integrity, to prevent progressive nerve damage, remains a clinical challenge. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are implicated in the development and maintenance of healthy nerves and may be beneficial for promoting peripheral nerve health. The aim of this systematic review is to assess the effects of oral omega-3 PUFA supplementation on peripheral nerve integrity, including both subjective and objective measures of peripheral nerve structure and/or function. Methods and analysis A systematic review of randomised controlled trials that have evaluated the effects of omega-3 PUFA supplementation on peripheral nerve assessments will be conducted. Comprehensive electronic database searches will be performed in Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), US National Institutes of Health Clinical Trials Registry and the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform. The title, abstract and keywords of identified articles will be assessed for eligibility by two reviewers. Full-text articles will be obtained for all studies judged as eligible or potentially eligible; these studies will be independently assessed by two reviewers to determine eligibility. Disagreements will be resolved by consensus. Risk of bias assessment will be performed using the Cochrane Collaboration risk of bias tool to appraise the quality of included studies. If clinically meaningful, and there are a sufficient number of eligible studies, a meta-analysis will be conducted and a summary of findings table will be provided. Ethics and dissemination This is a systematic review that will involve the analysis of previously published data, and therefore ethics approval is not required. A manuscript reporting the results of this systematic review will be published in a peer-reviewed journal and may also be presented at relevant scientific conferences

    Analysis and validation of overall N-glycan conformation in Privateer

    The oligosaccharides in N-glycosylation provide key structural and functional contributions to a glycoprotein. These contributions are dependent on the composition and overall conformation of the glycans. The Privateer software allows structural biologists to evaluate and improve the atomic structures of carbohydrates, including N-glycans; this software has recently been extended to check glycan composition through the use of glycomics data. Here, a broadening of the scope of the software to analyse and validate the overall conformation of N-glycans is presented, focusing on a newly compiled set of glycosidic linkage torsional preferences harvested from a curated set of glycoprotein models

    An assessment of early colonisation of implant-abutment metal surfaces by single species and co-cultured bacterial periodontal pathogens

    Objective Numerous studies have proposed that smooth metal surfaces reduce initial bacterial attachment in the establishment of an early biofilm formation. However, these studies have largely examined single bacterial species, which are not always relevant as pathogens identified as initiators of inflammatory peri-implantitis. This study investigated the adherence of four periodontally-relevant bacterial species to implant and abutment surfaces in current clinical use. Methods Discs of polished cobalt chromium (CoCr-polished) and milled titanium (Ti-milled), representing two clinically relevant surfaces, were prepared and surfaces were characterised. Bacterial species Porphyromonas gingivalis, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Prevotella intermedia and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans were cultured to mid-log or stationary growth phase. Co-cultures of P. gingivalis, F. nucleatum and P. gingivalis, F. nucleatum, Pr. intermedia were similarly prepared. Bacteria were inoculated onto discs for 2 h, stained with a live/dead fluorescent stain and percentage bacterial coverage was calculated by confocal microscopy and image analysis. Results CoCr-polished discs had smooth surfaces with gentle valley structures, whilst Ti-milled discs had sharp edged peaks. Both discs demonstrated a partial wetting ability capable of initiating bacterial adhesion. P. gingivalis, F. nucleatum and co-cultures, at both mid-log and stationary concentrations, demonstrated equally high coverage of both the smooth CoCr-polished and the rougher Ti-milled metal surfaces. Pr. intermedia and A. actinomycetemcomitans demonstrated lower surface coverage which was slightly higher for Ti-milled. Conclusion Variability was noted in the adherence potential for the respective periodontal pathogens examined. Particularly high adherence was noted for P. gingivalis and F. nucleatum, despite the manufacture of a smooth surface. Clinical significance Both surfaces studied may be used at implant-abutment junctions and both possess an ability to establish a bacterial biofilm containing a periodontally-relevant species. These surfaces are thus able to facilitate the apical migration of bacteria associated with peri-implantitis
