    Defiant Attitude among Library Users in Federal University of Petroleum Resources Library Effurun (FUPRE) Nigeria

    This study was designed to assess the causes of deviant attitude among library users in Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun, Nigeria. A survey research design was used for the study with a population of 300 potential users of the library. Three research questions were posed to guide the study. Questionnaire was used for data collection. Out of 300 questionnaires distributed to potential users of the library, 267 were correctly filled and returned. In analyzing the data obtained, percentage, frequency, pyramid and bar charts were used. The results obtained from the findings revealed that a wide range of deviant attitude associated with the users of FUPRE   library exist, reasons for deviant attitude as well as solution/recommendation were proffer to address the situation in the library under study.     User’s Utilization of Newspaper Media in a Nigerian University Library

    This study was designed to assess user’s utilization of newspaper media in Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun libraries. The design adopted for the study was a survey design. The total population of the study was 1,816 library users of Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE). A total of 816 of respondents were selected out of the total population. The stratified random sampling technique was used to select respondents across the central and the two colleges libraries in the University. These colleges are college of technology and college of science. Questionnaire was used for data collection. 816 questionnaires were distributed to library users, with multiple responses from figure 2 to 5 respectively. The Questionnaire were correctly filled and returned. In analyzing the data obtained, percentage, frequency, and graphs were used. The results obtained from the findings revealed that library users of FUPRE consult 1 to 2, 3 to 4, and more than 5 different types of newspapers daily in order to solve their information needs, the newspapers includes Vanguard, Guardian, Punch, Pointer, Complete Sport, and the Nation respectively. The different purpose of reading newspapers in the library was to provides them with information, others are to broaden the horizon of general knowledge, from searching new jobs, for educational purpose, for entertainment, to know the sport news, as usual task of the day, to pass the time, it improves status in the society, to keep abreast with present happenings of all over the world, for getting various scholarship, to improve the health consciousness and other reasons known to them. In another development, library users’ focus strictly on the following information in a newspaper media, they are sensational new, advertisement, editorial page, international news, politics, sports, entertainment, business news, educational news, agriculture, health issues and letters. Different challenges confronting user’s utilization of newspaper media was also revealed, they are lack of reading space, high cost of newspapers, limited copies of newspapers in the library, lack of qualify personnel to man the library, excessive heat or cold in the library and interruption of electricity.     Librarians’ perceptions and knowledge of the use of Whatsapp for the enhancement of library Services in university libraries in South- South, Nigeria

    This study examined the librarians’ perceptions and knowledge of the use of WhatsApp for the enhancement of service in university libraries in South-South, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey design and a questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. Total enumeration (purposive sampling) technique was used to gather data from 169 librarians in 6 federal, 4 state and 3 private university libraries in South-South, Nigeria. This sample population size was considered appropriate because from the study the above mentioned institution uses WhatsApp in service delivery. However, only 141 librarians answered and returned the questionnaire at the specified time. The findings revealed that 79 (56%) of the respondents were males and 62 (44%) of the respondents were females. The study revealed that the majority of the respondents portrayed a positive perception of the use of WhatsApp for the enhancement of their services. The findings discovered that librarians’ are knowledgeable on the use of WhatsApp for enhancement of services. The findings also revealed that librarians in services division are using WhatsApp to disseminate the following services; user education/orientation, reference services, instant feedback about the library, announcement, research help services, extension and outreach services to mention but a few. In addition, the study revealed hindrances on the use of WhatsApp in service delivery these include; no written policy on the use of WhatsApp in their university libraries, bandwidth issues, erratic power supply, poor internet facility and among others. The study recommended that university managements in Nigeria, Africa and in other parts of the world should adhere to the following: adopt the use of WhatsApp for the enhancement of their services, library management should organize regular training for librarians on practical use of WhatsApp for library services, library management should formulate policies that guide the use of WhatsApp in university libraries, swift internet access should be made available in university libraries to project the use of WhatsApp by librarians, alternative power supply should be made available for university libraries to enhance the use of WhatsApp and library users should be educated of the availability of WhatsApp services in their university library as well as training on how to contact the library via WhatsApp

    Influence of job rotation on employee productivity in Federal University libraries in Southern Nigeria

    This study focused on the influence of job rotation on employee productivity in federal university libraries in Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design using 653 academic librarians and library officers in Southern Nigeria. Total  enumeration method was used because the entire population (342 Librarians and 311 library officers which gave a total of 653 staff in the eighteen (18) federal university libraries in Southern Nigeria) was considered appropriate for this study. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire, and 621 responded to the questionnaire which gave a total return of 95% used for the research. The study revealed that job rotation enhances employee productivity in library operation and also enhances increase in productivity in a particular task. The study therefore recommends that University librarians and management of institution should ensure that job rotation is encouraged in library operation by allocating of special fund to the exercise. In addition, rotation of library staff should be done on a yearly basis before such a staff is deployed to other sections of the library.
