On Emergence and Causality in the Living World

We discuss the concept of emergence, and try to show that it is one of the most significant issues in the study of complex living systems. We stress particularly that emergent properties possess a specific causal power, which is not reducible to the power of their constituents. The emergence of physiological functions is profoundly related to the self-organized dynamics of biological systems. Which are the modes through which a model of geometrical space imagined by a geometer or a topologist, and a project of an inhabited space conceived by an architect can meet? And in which way this meeting may suggest new ideas and choices for organizing the everyday life in our urban and land spaces? Furthermore, in which way the phenomenological reflection, the anthropological study of places and the artistic creativity may contribute to the reconfiguration upon new basis of lived space and to the rethinking of our essential relationship with nature, living beings and things? In this essay we reflect on how a better comprehension of various geometrical forms that mathematics has to offer and of different forms of life (those nearby that inhabit our everyday life and those faraway which often inspire our thoughts and imagination), and also a greater capacity of observing and perceiving them, may contribute to introducing new models of rationality and sensibility and to improving the quality of life, as well as the relationships between human beings and the localities they inhabit.   Quali sono i modi attraverso cui un modello di spazio geometrico immaginato da un geometra-topologo e un progetto di spazio abitato concepito da un architetto o da un paesaggista possono incontrarsi? E in che modo quest’incontro può suggerire nuove idee e scelte per organizzare la vita nei nostri spazi rurali e urbani? In che modo la riflessione fenomenologica, lo studio antropologico dei luoghi e la creatività artistica possono contribuire a riconfigurare su nuove basi gli spazi vissuti e a ripensare i nostri rapporti vitali con la natura, gli esseri viventi e le cose? Immaginare mondi possibili: incontri tra scienza e letteratura

Dans ce article nous examinons quelques thèmes importants autour desquels la littérature et la science se rencontrent de manière fructueuse. L'une des spécificités les plus intéressantes commune à la littérature et à la science, c'est que les deux sont concernés par la narration et l'invention de mondes possibles, et elles le font en développant d'une façon profonde et originale une interaction entre imagination, créativité et complexité. De ce point de vue, une notion qui nous semble particulièrement importante est celle de "niveaux de réalité" (déjà mise en évidence par Calvino). Nous étudions différents apsects et significations des concepts d'espace, de pavage, de vide, de nature, de complexité et d'infini en science et en littérature. Nous analysons quelques affinités et différences entre les mondes mathématique, naturel et narratif, en particulier chez Leopardi, Calvino et Borges. Nous nous focalisons sur quelques aspects scientifiques, philosophiques et poétiques du concept de nature, et ce en relation avec la théorie de la complexité.
