Favorable outcome of total hip arthroplasty with insufficient bone coverage of the roof reinforcement ring: a case report

    Get PDF
A 59-year-old male patient underwent a total hip arthroplasty for the treatment of end-stage dysplastic osteoarthritis. A roof reinforcement ring, a cemented polyethylene cup, and a cementless stem were used. Extensive superolateral portion of the ring was uncovered by host bone. Morsellized autogenous femoral-head graft was impacted to fill the space between superolateral border of the ring and superior part of the dysplastic acetabulum. At the follow-up after 4-years, the patient had no complaints and was very satisfied with the operation result. The hip radiograph revealed no signs of instability of the acetabular component, and no bone graft resorption. Despite the suboptimal implantation of the ring compromising, apparently, mechanical stability of the prosthesis, the outcome was favorable. This result can be supported by the fixation of the metal ring with screws, the adequate orientation of the prosthesis, the position of hip´s center of rotation, and bone graft incorporation

The reaction of 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone and 4,4′-bipyridine with zinc acetate produced the title compound, [Zn(C10H5O3)2(C10H8N2)(H2O)]·C10H8N2·2H2O. The bond lengths and angles around the metal atom indicate a deviation from octahedral geometry. The two naphthoquinone ligands coordinate in a cis fashion, with the 4,4′-bipyridine ligand and the water molecules completing the coordination sphere of the metal atom. The asymmetric unit contains also one free 4,4′-bipyridine molecule and two uncoordinated water molecules. These molecules make contacts with the complex through O—H⋯N and O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, creating a layer two-dimensional network parallel to (121)

Schistosoma mansoni rSm29 Antigen Induces a Regulatory Phenotype on Dendritic Cells and Lymphocytes From Patients With Cutaneous Leishmaniasis

The immune response induced by Schistosma mansoni antigens is able to prevent immune-mediated diseases. Conversely, the inflammatory response in cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), although responsible for controlling the infection, is also associated with the pathogenesis of disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of the S. mansoni Sm29 antigen to change certain aspects of the profiles of monocyte derived dendritic cells (MoDCs) and lymphocytes from subjects with CL in vitro. Expression of surface molecules and intracellular cytokines in the MoDCs and lymphocytes as well as the proliferation of Leishmania braziliensis were evaluated by flow cytometry. Levels of cytokines were evaluated in culture supernatants by ELISA. It was observed that stimulation by rSm29 increased the frequency of expression of CD83, CD80, CD86, and IL-10R in MoDCs compared to non-stimulated cultures. Additionally rSm29 decreased the frequency CD4+ and CD8+ T cells expressing CD28 and increased the frequency of CD4+CD25hi and CD4+CTLA-4+ T lymphocytes. Addition of rSm29 to cultures increased IL-10 levels and decreased levels of IL-12p40 and IFN-γ, while not altering TNF levels compared to non-stimulated cultures. This study showed that rSm29 induced a regulatory profile in MoDCs and lymphocytes and thereby regulated the exaggerated inflammation observed in CL. Considering that there are few therapeutic options for leishmaniasis, the use of rSm29 may be an alternative to current treatment and may be an important strategy to reduce the healing time of lesions in patients with CL

Cross-Study Projections of Genomic Biomarkers: An Evaluation in Cancer Genomics

Human disease studies using DNA microarrays in both clinical/observational and experimental/controlled studies are having increasing impact on our understanding of the complexity of human diseases. A fundamental concept is the use of gene expression as a “common currency” that links the results of in vitro controlled experiments to in vivo observational human studies. Many studies – in cancer and other diseases – have shown promise in using in vitro cell manipulations to improve understanding of in vivo biology, but experiments often simply fail to reflect the enormous phenotypic variation seen in human diseases. We address this with a framework and methods to dissect, enhance and extend the in vivo utility of in vitro derived gene expression signatures. From an experimentally defined gene expression signature we use statistical factor analysis to generate multiple quantitative factors in human cancer gene expression data. These factors retain their relationship to the original, one-dimensional in vitro signature but better describe the diversity of in vivo biology. In a breast cancer analysis, we show that factors can reflect fundamentally different biological processes linked to molecular and clinical features of human cancers, and that in combination they can improve prediction of clinical outcomes

Diferenças entre os sexos no ciúme romântico: um estudo brasileiro

The literature about romantic jealousy shows two principal theories in relation to the differences between sexes: specific innate module and socio-cognitive theory. This study intended to compare men and women answers using a questionnaire in the format of forced choice and the same questionnaire in the format of continuous measurement. 378 students participated, divided into two groups that answered the questionnaire in different formats. The differences between sexes was only evidenced on group 1 and few differences were found comparing men and women beliefs about infidelity and romantic relationship, on both groups. We pointed out the need for more studies in this field.
