Pontecagnano and the site of Monte Vetrano in the Agro Picentino provide some interesting cases
for reconstructing cult practices and ritual actions integrated into the frame of the landscape: the
paper reports the results of the excavations carried out in the two settlements for the construction of
the third lane of the highway Salerno-Reggio Calabria and the WTE plant of Salerno
Una festa etrusca per Dioniso?
The paper aims to analyze the figurative program of an Etruscan black-figure amphora
in Dresden, decorated on one side with a scene of sacrifice in the presence of a satyr, and
on the other, with the representation of an armed dance.
The assumption is that the amphora is the product of a special commission to celebrate
a successful performance as a small triumph, using the mythical paradigm of the Gigantomachy
of Heracles as a model
Pair Production of small Black Holes in Heterotic String Theories
We study pair production of small BPS BH's in heterotic strings compactified
on tori and in the FHSV model. After recalling the identification of small BH's
in the perturbative BPS spectrum, we compute the tree-level amplitudes for
processes initiated by massless vector bosons or gravitons. We then analyze the
resulting cross sections in terms of energy and angular distributions. Finally,
we briefly comment on scenari with large extra dimensions and on
generalizations of our results to non-BPS, non-extremal and rotating BH's.Comment: 33 page
The ancient settlement of Pontecagnano (7th-3rd centuries B.C.) was built up on the travertine plateau overlooking the Sele river on the NW sector
of the alluvial-coastal plain. Motorway construction works brought to light archaeological remains of an ancient urban and suburban settlement.
Archaeostratigraphical records dated between the late Pleistocene and today have been elucidated. The geomorphological and archaeo-tephro-stratigraphical study, coupled with palaeoenvironmental analysis, allowed us to outline the evolution of the environment during the Holocene. The environmental changes have been mainly induced by human activities, during the 7th -3rd centuries B.C., by land reclamation. During other periods of the Holocene the environmental changes can be attributed to climatic variations and, secondly, to the impact of the distal products of Neapolitan volcanic eruptions on geomorphic systems
The study proposes a further reflection on the famous verses of the Hesiod’s Theogony dedicated to Agrius and Latinus (Hes. Th., 1011-16): the basic assumption is that the reference of the sons of Odysseus and Circe is structured in relation to the episode of Polyphemus (Od. 9), used as a negative paradigm for denoting the inverse image of the two kings of Tyrsenoi. According to this hypothesis, the passage of the Theogony may be considered as a true founding myth of syngeneia between Greeks and Etruscans: it explains the early reception of the theme of Odysseus and Polyphemus in prestigious Etruscan vases of the seventh century. B.C. as, e. g., the well-known crater of Aristonothos
