    HUBUNGAN ANTARA DUKUNGAN SOSIAL DAN KECERDASAN EMOSIONAL DENGAN SELF-REGULATED LEARNING SISWA

    Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara dukungan sosial dan kecerdasan emosional dengan self-regulated learning siswa. Jenis penelitian adalah kuantitatif dengan tujuan komparatif. Populasi penelitian adalah seluruh siswa di Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri 2 Medan yang berjumlah 1.125 orang pada saat penelitian dilakukan. Sampel penelitian dikhususkan pada siswa kelas VIII yang dipilih dengan menggunakan teknik sampling acak sederhana. Sampel penelitian kemudian terpilih  sebanyak 150 orang siswa kelas VIII.  Pengumpulan data penelitian dilakukan dengan menggunakan tiga skala yang disusun menurut metode Likert, yakni skala self-regulated learning, skala dukungan sosial dan skala kecerdasan emosional. Analisis data penelitian yang terkumpul dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode statistik berupa teknik korelasi pearson product moment dan analisis regresi ganda (dua prediktor). Hasil analisa data menunjukkan adanya hubungan yang signifikan antara dukungan sosial dengan self-regulated learning, adanya hubungan yang signifikan antara kecerdasan emosional dengan self-regulated learning,serta adanya hubungan yang signifikan antara dukungan sosial dan kecerdasan emosional dengan self-regulated learning pada siswa.

    This descriptive qualitative research investigated lecturers’ perception on online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic era. This turned out that most of the lecturers are keen on running the teaching and learning activities online despite some problems which might repeatedly occurred during the class. However, most of the participants think that the online learning is difficult to do albeit they like it. Then, discussion is the most favorable method to do in the online learning activities. Some possible suggestions for future actions is needed

    Metacognitive Strategies Employed by English Students in Reading Comprehension

    This research aims to investigate the metacognitive strategies employed by English students at Bengkulu University in reading comprehension. This research was a descriptive quantitative study with the design was survey. The design intends to describe the students’ frequencies in employing metacognitive strategies and also the students’ awareness of metacognitive strategies appropriateness in reading comprehension. The population of this study was English students in KIP Faculty at Bengkulu University. The sample was 92 of English students overall. The sample was taken by using simple random sampling technique. The data were collected by using MARSI questionnaire by Mochtari & Reichard. The data obtained from questionnaire was analyzed by using scoring rubric of MARSI questionnaire and used mean formula to calculate the students’ results. The results have revealed that students highly preferred to employ Problem Solving Strategies (3.00) in reading. Global Reading Strategies was the medium strategy preferred by students (2.88). The least strategy preferred by students was Support Reading Strategies (2.82).The result also indicated that English students are frequently employee metacognitive strategies in reading. As conclusion, this study has revealed that students most frequently employed problem-solving strategies (PROB). The study has also found that students have medium awareness of metacognitive strategies appropriateness in reading

    STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES IN ENGLISH SPEAKING LESSON AT THE ELEVENTH GRADE OF STATE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 04 MUKO-MUKO

    This research aimed to describe the students’ difficulties encountered by the eleventh-grade students of State Senior High School 04 Muko-Muko in English Speaking Lesson and to describe the factors causing the difficulties in English Speaking Lesson at the eleventh grade of State Senior High School 04 Muko-Muko. This research used mix method research design. The subject of this research was eleventh grade students at State Senior High School 04 Muko-Muko. The sample of the research was 31 students for questionnaires and 10 students for interview. The instruments of this research were questionnaire adapted from Rahayu (2020) and interview. The researcher analyzed the data by by finding the percentage of each question item in questionnaire while interview data was analyzed by data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. This study found two findings. First, the result showed that there were five psychological difficulties encountered by the eleventh grade students of State Senior High School 04 Muko-Muko in English Speaking Lesson, namely lack of motivation, anxiety, shyness, fear of mistakes, and lack of confidence. Second, based on five psychological difficulties, there are several factors causing namely no awareness to learn english, no interest of English, no knowledge of the importance of English, students’ low English skill in vocabulary and pronunciation, friends’ negative responses, teacher’s bad responses, and students’ terrible belief in their English skill. To sum up, the next study is recommended to find the strategies to overcome the students’ difficulties in English speaking lesson

    Idiomatic Expressions Analysis in Joker Movie

    This research aims to find out the types of idiomatic expressions and to identify the patterns of idiomatic expressions in the Joker movie. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. In collecting the data, this research used a classification form, documentation, and monolingual dictionaries. The result showed that there were 4 types of idiomatic expressions found in the Joker movie; proverbs, clichés, fixed statements, and slang. The other types of idiomatic expressions such as simile, binomial, and other language were absent from the Joker movie. Moreover, the researcher identified the patterns of the idiomatic expressions in the Joker movie were; noun phrases, transitive verb phrases, verbal phrases, prepositional phrases, pair of words, and sentence pattern. The other patterns of idiomatic expressions such as be + prepositional phrases and alliterative comparison were not consisted in the Joker movie

    Learning Strategies in Speaking for Presentation Applied by EFL Students

    This research aims to find out the types of learning strategies in speaking for presentation applied by the fourth semester students’ of the English Education Study Program at the University of  Bengkulu. This research was descriptive quantitative research. The population of this research was the fourth-semester students of the English Education Study Program of the University of Bengkulu in the 2020-2021 academic year. The total sample of this research was 28 students. The data were collected by using a questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 18 items which 3 categories strategies (Cognitive strategy, Metacognitive strategy, and Social-affective strategy).  The questionnaire was adapted from (Liao & Chiang, 2004). This research used SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science) 16.0 program to get the types of learning strategies in speaking for presentation applied by the fourth semester students’. The results of this research showed the type of learning strategies applied applied by students, is cognitive strategy. The cognitive strategies with a weighted average 3.15. Then, the metacognitive strategies with a weighted average 3.09. The last, the social-effective strategies got weighted avarage 3.07. Similarly, it can be concluded  the types of learning strategies in speaking for presentation applied by the fourth semester students’ were Cognitive strategies

    Teacher Talk in English Foreign Language Classroom

    This research investigates teacher talk in SMAN 5 Kota Bengkulu, based on FLINT theory by Moskowitz (1971). This research analyzed teacher talk categories spoken and the high frequency teacher talk used by the teacher to see what the category was often used in classroom. The design of this research was descriptive mixed-method that involved two teachers who taught at the tenth-grade of SMAN 5 Kota Bengkulu academic years 2019-20. The data of this study were taken by video recording the teacher-students interaction in the classroom that contained eleven categories of teacher talk. The data of this research were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The result of this study that all of teacher’s talk categories often used by the teacher who taught at tenth-grade of SMAN 5 Kota Bengkulu during classroom interaction. The high frequency of teacher talk categories was asking question around 55.6%, while the least of teacher talk categories were correcting without rejection and criticizes student behavior. It means that the teachers tended to use indirect influence rather than direct influence

    The implementation of the integrated performance assessment (IPA) model to improve English students' speaking skills

    This study aims to analyze the extent to which the application of the IPA model could improve Indonesian students’ speaking skill, especially speaking skills for discussion course. It was classroom action research in which the stages of its activities include planning, implementation, evaluation, and reflection. This research’s subjects were the third semester English Department University of Bengkulu.  The researchers only took four cycles as the data of the research. Qualitative and quantitative data were analyzed to find a valid conclusion. The results show that the application of the IPA model improved the basic skills of students’ speaking skills in class.  It can be seen from the improvement in almost every cycle. The mean score in cycle 1 was 80, followed by 80.3 in cycle 2, but slightly decreased in cycle 3 with a mean score of 79.6 and got higher again in cycle 4 with a mean score of 82. Internal and external factors also contribute to the students’ speaking skills

    English Students’ Difficulties in Understanding Listening Section of the TOEFL Test

    The objective of this reseach is to find out the difficulties and the dominant factor that faced by the English students in understanding the listening section of the toefl test. This research used descriptive quantitative method. 18 students as the total population and 18 students become a sample of this research. The instrument of the reasearch was questionnaire adopted from Hamouda in Raini (2019). The questionnaire consist of 27 statements and devided into 7 tables. The result of this research shown that the highest percentage by using mean is in physical setting (50%) and the dominant factor is in physical setting (50%) where the problem that were the difficulty to concentrate with noises around and unclear sounds from poor quality-CD player are the biggest difficulties to the English students UNIB. It could be concluded that the content of listening test and physical setting become the highest difficulties and the dominant factor that faced by English Students UNIB. It was recommended for the  English lecturer should pay more intention towards to listening material and find more suitable method or technique in teaching listening course and students should find another option to cover the listening skill

    Exploring Teachers Techniques in Teaching Speaking

    The objectives of this research were to find out the types of techniques in teaching speaking and to describe how the teachers implement the teaching speaking techniques at SMA 6 Kota Bengkulu. This research used a case study qualitative method. The population of the research was two teachers who taught the first-grade students of SMA 6 Kota Bengkulu. To collect the data, the researcher used observation, interview, and documentation. Data processing was divided into three stages, those are data reduction, displaying data, and conclusion. The result of the research showed that teachers used some techniques in teaching speaking, such as discussion, storytelling, and brainstorming. In the discussion, the teacher asked students to make a group consisted of two people because students in the class were just half of the total of students. In storytelling, the teacher told her stories when she was a student to motivate students in learning. In brainstorming, the teacher began the lesson by giving a question to make students think and got ideas. It is concluded that teachers used techniques adjust with the material and condition of the class. It is recommended for further researchers in conducting the same topic about speaking technique
