    Pleiotropic Effects of Vitamin D in Kidney Disease

    Vitamin D is metabolized in the liver and kidneys and then converted to the active form, 1.25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1.25(OH)2D]. Chronic kidney disease patients usually lack both 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and 1.25(OH)2D due to impaired renal function and 1α-hydroxylase deficiency. Chronic kidney disease patients have a high incidence of cardiovascular and infectious morbidities. Increasing evidence indicates a relationship between vitamin D deficiency and cardiovascular and infectious mortality risks. Vitamin D may have significant biological effects beyond its traditional roles on mineral and bone metabolism. Many extrarenal cells have the capability to produce local active 1.25(OH)2D in an intracrine or paracrine fashion. Vitamin D has a significant association with nonskeletal diseases, such as immunodeficiency, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular disease, proteinuria, and acute kidney injury.     This paper develops a conceptual model to examine how big data analysis use affect supply chain performance in an omnichannel. A research model is developed which comprises 4 constructs and 4 research hypotheses, the efficiency and adaptability as mediating constructs. The model is tested on data collected from 245 top manufacturing firms in Taiwan, using structural equation modeling. The research findings highlight the importance of efficiency and adaptability as mediators for ensuring supply chain performance by reinforcing big data analytics use

    Updated constraints on Georgi-Machacek model, and its electroweak phase transition and associated gravitational waves

    With theoretical constraints such as perturbative unitarity and vacuum stability conditions and updated experimental data of Higgs measurements and direct searches for exotic scalars at the LHC, we perform an updated scan of the allowed parameter space of the Georgi-Machacek (GM) model. With the refined global fit, we examine the allowed parameter space for inducing strong first-order electroweak phase transitions (EWPTs) and find only the one-step phase transition is phenomenologically viable. Based upon the result, we study the associated gravitational wave (GW) signals and find most of which can be detected by several proposed experiments. We also make predictions on processes that may serve as promising probes to the GM model in the near future at the LHC, including the di-Higgs productions and several exotic scalar production channels.Comment: 42 pages, 11 figures, 9 table

    Fast integral equation methods for the modified Helmholtz equation

    We present a collection of integral equation methods for the solution to the two-dimensional, modified Helmholtz equation, u(\x) - \alpha^2 \Delta u(\x) = 0, in bounded or unbounded multiply-connected domains. We consider both Dirichlet and Neumann problems. We derive well-conditioned Fredholm integral equations of the second kind, which are discretized using high-order, hybrid Gauss-trapezoid rules. Our fast multipole-based iterative solution procedure requires only O(N) or O(NlogN)O(N\log N) operations, where N is the number of nodes in the discretization of the boundary. We demonstrate the performance of the methods on several numerical examples.Comment: Published in Computers & Mathematics with Application

    Role of T Cells in Type 2 Diabetic Nephropathy

    Type 2 diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the most common cause of end-stage renal disease and is increasingly considered as an inflammatory disease characterized by leukocyte infiltration at every stage of renal involvement. Inflammation and activation of the immune system are closely involved in the pathogenesis of diabetes and its microvascular complications. Macrophage has been well recognized to play an important role in type 2 DN, leukocyte infiltration, and participated in process of DN, as was proposed recently. Th1, Th2, Th17, T reg, and cytotoxic T cells are involved in the development and progression of DN. The purpose of this review is to assemble current information concerning the role of T cells in the development and progression of type 2 DN. Specific emphasis is placed on the potential interaction and contribution of the T cells to renal damage. The therapeutic strategies involving T cells in the treatment of type 2 DN are also reviewed. Improving knowledge of the recognition of T cells as significant pathogenic mediators in DN reinforces the possibility of new potential therapeutic targets translated into future clinical treatments

    Response of Laser-Induced Thermal Lens Effect at Solid Surface

    Recently Kuo et al. [1,2] and Satio et al.[3] presented the surface-thermal lens (STL) technique, this novel photothermal deformation technique has attracted great attention because it is a highly sensitive, noncontact and nondestructive measurement[4–6]. In this technique, a modulated pump beam is focused on the sample surface to produce the surface deformation and a cw probe beam is incident at the deformation region. Differing from the conventional photothermal deformation techniques, the spot size of the probe beam at the sample surface is much larger than the pump beam one. Then the probe beam reflected from the surface produces a diffraction pattern at the detection plane. More recently, STL technique has been successfully applied to study the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity of semiconductor materials[5], weak absorption of optical thin films[6] and characterization of the solid materials[7,8]. However, the mechanism of STL phenomena has not been completely understood. Most theoretical models took no account of the influence of the air-thermal lens (ATL), although some experiment showed that the air significantly affected the detected diffraction pattern[2]. In addition, it is necessary to characterize frequency responses of signals because the response is used to determine the thermal property of the solid materials[5]

    SummaryObjectiveBurkitt's lymphoma (BL) occurs mostly in children; bilateral ovarian involvement mimicking a gynecologic malignancy in adults is extremely rare. Here, we report a patient with BL mimicking a gynecologic tumorCase ReportA 50-year-old Taiwanese woman presented with the complaint of persistent lower abdominal distension with dull pain, easy satiety, and progressively increasing abdominal girth for 2 weeks. Amenorrhea was also noted for about 2 months, and her review of systems was negative for the common “B” symptoms associated with lymphoma. At our hospital, imaging studies revealed a huge pelvic mass (10.8 ×8.7 cm), suggesting a large subserous myoma or an ovarian tumor. Under the impression of pelvic mass, she underwent exploratory laparotomy. Primary ovarian sex-cord malignancy with cecum involvement was impressed by the primitive intraoperative frozen section report. Subsequently, an optimal cytoreductive operation with right hemicolectomy was performed. However, final histopathologic report was an extranodal multifocal BL.ConclusionAlthough extranodal BL in ovaries is a rare condition, it should be noted in the differential diagnosis of pelvic gynecologic malignancies
