    Economic Consequences of Auditing Standards: Evidence from Auditing Standard No. 18 Related Parties

    In 2014, the PCAOB adopted a new auditing standard - AS 18 Related Parties - to improve auditors’ performance in related-party transaction (RPT) auditing. In this study, we investigate the impact of AS 18 on firms’ real RPT activities and audit fees by examining six years’ data surrounding the effective date of AS 18. Using a matched-pair difference-in-differences approach, we find significantly reduced RPT activities and increased audit fees following the adoption of AS 18. Our findings reveal that AS 18 has a greater impact on small client firms, particularly firms audited by non-Big-4 firms. In contrast, the Big-4 firms had already taken measures to improve their RPT audit procedures. We also find a more pronounced effect for firms with high ex-ante fraud risk

    Literature-Augmented Clinical Outcome Prediction

    We present BEEP (Biomedical Evidence-Enhanced Predictions), a novel approach for clinical outcome prediction that retrieves patient-specific medical literature and incorporates it into predictive models. Based on each individual patient's clinical notes, we train language models (LMs) to find relevant papers and fuse them with information from notes to predict outcomes such as in-hospital mortality. We develop methods to retrieve literature based on noisy, information-dense patient notes, and to augment existing outcome prediction models with retrieved papers in a manner that maximizes predictive accuracy. Our approach boosts predictive performance on three important clinical tasks in comparison to strong recent LM baselines, increasing F1 by up to 5 points and precision@Top-K by a large margin of over 25%.Comment: To appear in Findings of NAACL 2022.     Increased DJ-1 expression under oxidative stress and in Alzheimer's disease brains

    Mutations in the DJ-1 gene have been linked to autosomal recessive familial Parkinson's disease. To understand the function of DJ-1, we determined the DJ-1 expression in both zebrafish and post mortem human brains. We found that DJ-1 was expressed early during zebrafish development and throughout adulthood. Knock down (KD) of DJ-1 by injection of morpholino did not cause dramatic morphologic alterations during development, and no loss of dopaminergic neurons was observed in embryos lacking DJ-1. However, DJ-1 KD embryos were more susceptible to programmed cell death. While a slight reduction in staining for islet-1 positive neurons was observed in both DJ-1 KD and H2O2 treated embryos, the number of apoptotic cells was significantly increased in both KD and H2O2 treated embryos. Interestingly, DJ-1 expression was increased in brains of zebrafish under conditions of oxidative stress, indicating that DJ-1 is a part of stress-responsive machinery. Since oxidative stress is one of the major contributors to the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD), we also examined DJ-1 expression in AD brains. Using DJ-1 specific antibodies, we failed to detect a robust staining of DJ-1 in brain tissues from control subjects. However, DJ-1 immunoreactivity was detected in hippocampal pyramidal neurons and astrocytes of AD brains. Therefore, our results strongly suggest that DJ-1 expression is not necessary during zebrafish development but can be induced in zebrafish exposed to oxidative stress and is present in human AD brains
