    This report highlights findings from the Fall 2013 Faculty Library Survey with information from the Fall 2012 Ithaka survey included where relevant. The Fall 2012 Ithaka S+R Faculty Survey focused broadly on research and teaching practices as well as the dissemination, collecting, discovery, and access of research and teaching materials. The Fall 2013 Faculty Library survey was designed to gauge the Claremont Colleges faculty’s familiarity with, use of, and views about: a) Library educational services; b) student’s Information Literacy (IL) competencies; and c) Library collections. Both the Fall 2012 Ithaka and Fall 2013 Faculty Library surveys represent aspects of a larger environmental scanning and strategic planning process intended to give the library insight into the characteristics of its users

    Is tagging with visual implant elastomer a reliable technique for marking earthworms?

    Visual implant elastomer (VIE) has recently been employed to investigate different aspects of earthworm ecology. However, a number of fundamental questions relating to the detection and positioning of the tag, its persistence and potential effects on earthworms remain unknown. Seven earthworm species belonging to three ecological groupings, with different pigmentation and burrowing behaviour, were tagged using different coloured VIE. External inspection after two days, one week and 1, 10 and 27 months were followed by preservation, dissection and internal inspection. Tags could be seen in living specimens to 27 months, and dissection revealed that in most cases they were lodged in the coelomic cavity, held in place by septa. However, over longer time periods (more than two years), the chlorogogenous tissue tended to bind to the tags and made external observation increasingly difficult. Migration of the VIE material towards the posterior of the earthworm and potential loss of the tag were only observed on rare occasions, and a recovery rate in excess of 98% was recorded. By introducing a reasonable amount of VIE into segments, just after the clitellum, this technique can become a valuable tool in earthworm ecology and life history studies, particularly in short-medium term laboratory and field experiments

    Monitoring using mobile technology: the case of dispensers for safe water

    Since 2009, Dispensers for Safe Water (DSW) has collected thousands of community surveys, dispenser surveys, promoter surveys, installation forms, and chlorine delivery records to track and monitor the quality of service it provides to local communities in Kenya and Uganda. In late 2011, the program began the transition to electronic surveys on handheld mobile devices and the complex data management systems needed to support this technology. Mobile surveys have proven faster, cheaper, and more accurate than paper forms; they have also enabled increased innovation, iteration, and course correction through rapid feedback and analysis. However, challenges remain, including connecting daily field activities to higher-level analysis and aggregation of results in the cloud. To address this, DSW is working to build a system of dashboards and mobile applications to better enable the field team to access, edit, and operationalize the information collected

    PP-Wave Light-Cone Free String Field Theory at Finite Temperature

    In this paper, a real-time formulation of light-cone pp-wave string field theory at finite temperature is presented. This is achieved by developing the thermo field dynamics (TFD) formalism in a second quantized string scenario. The equilibrirum thermodynamic quantities for a pp-wave ideal string gas are derived directly from expectation values on the second quantized string thermal vacuum. Also, we derive the real-time thermal pp-wave closed string propagator. In the flat space limit it is shown that this propagator can be written in terms of Theta functions, exactly as the zero temperature one. At the end, we show how supestrings interactions can be introduced, making this approach suitable to study the BMN dictionary at finite temperature.Comment: 27 pages, revtex
