    Coherent QCD phenomena in the Coherent Pion-Nucleon and Pion-Nucleus Production of Two Jets at High Relative Momenta

    We use QCD to compute the cross section for coherent production of a di-jet (treated as a qqˉq\bar q moving at high relative transverse momentum,κt\kappa_t ). In the target rest frame,the space-time evolution of this reaction is dominated by the process in which the high κt\kappa_t qqˉq\bar q component of the pion wave function is formed before reaching the target. It then interacts through two gluon exchange. In the approximation of keeping the leading order in powers of αs\alpha_s and all orders in αsln(κt2/k02),\alpha_{s}\ln(\kappa_{t}^2/k_{0}^2), the amplitudes for other processes are shown to be smaller at least by a power of αs\alpha_{s}. The resulting dominant amplitude is proportional to z(1z)κt4z(1-z) \kappa_t^{-4} (zz is the fraction light-cone(+)momentum carried by the quark in the final state) times the skewed gluon distribution of the target. For the pion scattering by a nuclear target, this means that at fixed xN=2κt2/sx_{N}= 2\kappa_{t}^2/s (but κt2\kappa_{t}^2\to \infty) the nuclear process in which there is only a single interaction is the most important one to contribute to the reaction. Thus in this limit color transparency phenomena should occur.These findings are in accord with E971 experiment at FNAL. We also re-examine a potentially important nuclear multiple scattering correction which is positive and A1/3/κt4\propto A^{1/3}/\kappa_t^4. The meaning of the signal obtained from the experimental measurement of pion diffraction into two jets is also critically examined and significant corrections are identified.We show also that for values of κt\kappa_t achieved at fixed target energies, di-jet production by the e.m. field of the nucleus leads to an insignificant correction which gets more important as κt\kappa_t increases.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figure

    Epidemiology of invasive fungal diseases among patients with haematological disorders in the Asia-Pacific: a prospective observational study

    AbstractWe conducted a 2-year multicentre prospective observational study to determine the epidemiology of and mortality associated with invasive fungal diseases (IFDs) among patients with haematological disorders in Asia. Eleven institutions from 8 countries/regions participated, with 412 subjects (28.2% possible, 38.3% probable and 33.5% proven IFDs) recruited. The epidemiology of IFDs in participating institutions was similar to Western centres, with Aspergillus spp. (65.9%) or Candida spp. (26.7%) causing the majority of probable and proven IFDs. The overall 30-day mortality was 22.1%. Progressive haematological disorder (odds ratio [OR] 5.192), invasive candidiasis (OR 3.679), and chronic renal disease (OR 6.677) were independently associated with mortality

The topics covered are molecular outflows, accretion disks, fragmentation and chemical properties of low- and high-mass star-forming regions.     Decomposition of the QCD String into Dipoles and Unintegrated Gluon Distributions

    We present the perturbative and non-perturbative QCD structure of the dipole-dipole scattering amplitude in momentum space. The perturbative contribution is described by two-gluon exchange and the non-perturbative contribution by the stochastic vacuum model which leads to confinement of the quark and antiquark in the dipole via a string of color fields. This QCD string gives important non-perturbative contributions to high-energy reactions. A new structure different from the perturbative dipole factors is found in the string-string scattering amplitude. The string can be represented as an integral over stringless dipoles with a given dipole number density. This decomposition of the QCD string into dipoles allows us to calculate the unintegrated gluon distribution of hadrons and photons from the dipole-hadron and dipole-photon cross section via kT-factorization.Comment: 43 pages, 14 figure

    Alginate-derived solid acid catalyst for esterification of low-cost palm fatty acid distillate

    Aluminum alginate (Al-A), a bio-based solid acid catalyst derived from natural brown algae extracted algin (polysaccharide) was studied for its physicochemical properties and catalytic activity as an acid catalyst via esterification of palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD). Based on the results, the presence of Al phases in the alginate system has successfully lowered crystallinity with winkled surface of bead form structure, which created large Lewis acid sites for the esterification process. Besides, the optimization study (RSM-CCD) showed that the methanol:PFAD ratio rendered the most significant effect on the PFAD conversion, followed by catalyst amount. The highest PFAD conversion of 92% was achieved at reaction conditions of 10 wt.% of catalyst concentration, 20:1 of methanol:PFAD molar ratio and reaction time of 230 min. High recovery of biodiesel was obtained for 2 consecutive cycles with PFAD conversion >80% under the optimized reaction conditions in the reusability test. The synthesized PFAD-derived biodiesel has complied with international biodiesel standards EN14214 and ASTM D6751. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    What Malaysian women believe about Viagra: a qualitative inquiry

    This paper highlights women's perceptions of sildenafil citrate (Viagra, Pfizer). It is based on a qualitative study on perceptions of erectile dysfunction in the Malaysian multicultural society. Six focus groups were conducted, consisting of 69 women, aged between 40 and 70 years, recruited from the general public and who had given informed consent. The findings revealed that the women were aware of erectile dysfunction and Viagra. Due to their concern about the negative aspects of Viagra, the Chinese and Malay traditional methods of treatment were commonly mentioned. The women from three ethnic groups viewed the possibility of their husband starting to take Viagra with lots of suspicion, mistrust and fear. They would prefer their husband discussing with them the issue of resorting to taking Viagra. The Chinese and Indian women perceived that if a man takes Viagra, it will boost his ego and he will feel more manly. Indian women felt that a man taking Viagra is proof of his love for his wife. The Malay women felt that a man would be ashamed and have a low self-esteem if he were to resort to taking Viagra. Although Viagra is meant for the male, understanding of women's perception of it is beneficial for a couple's sexual relationship
