    Ballistic-Ohmic quantum Hall plateau transition in graphene pn junction

    Recent quantum Hall experiments conducted on disordered graphene pn junction provide evidence that the junction resistance could be described by a simple Ohmic sum of the n and p mediums' resistances. However in the ballistic limit, theory predicts the existence of chirality-dependent quantum Hall plateaus in a pn junction. We show that two distinctively separate processes are required for this ballistic-Ohmic plateau transition, namely (i) hole/electron Landau states equilibration and (ii) valley iso-spin dilution of the incident Landau edge state. These conclusions are obtained by a simple scattering theory argument, and confirmed numerically by performing ensembles of quantum magneto-transport calculations on a 0.1um-wide disordered graphene pn junction within the tight-binding model. The former process is achieved by pn interface roughness, where a pn interface disorder with a root-mean-square roughness of 10nm was found to suffice under typical experimental conditions. The latter process is mediated by extrinsic edge roughness for an armchair edge ribbon and by intrinsic localized intervalley scattering centers at the edge of the pn interface for a zigzag ribbon. In light of these results, we also examine why higher Ohmic type plateaus are less likely to be observable in experiments.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

    Mushroom-Shaped Structures as Tracers of Buoyant Flow in the Galactic Disk

    Recent HI emission observations of the Southern Galactic hemisphere have revealed a mushroom-like structure extending from z=-70 to -450 pc, composed of a stem and a cap. Similar structures occur in three-dimensional simulations of a dynamic galactic disk driven by isolated and clustered supernovae. Using these simulations, we show that hot gas in the Galactic disk that is not evacuated through chimneys expands into the cooler gas of the thick disk, forming mushroom-shaped structures.     The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement: Looking Ahead to the Next Steps

    Pressure has been building for the conclusion of the 12-country Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations. Getting the deal done is important, but the TPP is not just another free trade agreement (FTA). It represents the chance to set a trade agenda for the future across a wide range of topics for countries throughout the Asia-Pacific region. This means that the agreement should not be settled in haste. More importantly, it also means that key decisions need to be reached about broader issues related to the institutional structure of the TPP. These decisions must be made now, before the deal is closed, on issues such as how to create the TPP as a living agreement, the formation of a TPP Secretariat, and the clarification of entry conditions for future members such as the People’s Republic of China (PRC). These choices must be made deliberately and carefully even while officials are struggling with reaching closure on the most highly sensitive issues still remaining in the agreement. It will not be easy, but wise decisions are necessary now to ensure the long-term success of the TPP

    Efficient and feasible state tomography of quantum many-body systems

    We present a novel method to perform quantum state tomography for many-particle systems which are particularly suitable for estimating states in lattice systems such as of ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices. We show that the need for measuring a tomographically complete set of observables can be overcome by letting the state evolve under some suitably chosen random circuits followed by the measurement of a single observable. We generalize known results about the approximation of unitary 2-designs, i.e., certain classes of random unitary matrices, by random quantum circuits and connect our findings to the theory of quantum compressed sensing. We show that for ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices established techniques like optical super-lattices, laser speckles, and time-of-flight measurements are sufficient to perform fully certified, assumption-free tomography. Combining our approach with tensor network methods - in particular the theory of matrix-product states - we identify situations where the effort of reconstruction is even constant in the number of lattice sites, allowing in principle to perform tomography on large-scale systems readily available in present experiments.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, minor corrections, discussion added, emphasizing that no single-site addressing is needed at any stage of the scheme when implemented in optical lattice system

    Improving the sensitivity of Higgs boson searches in the golden channel

    Leptonic decays of the Higgs boson in the ZZ* channel yield what is known as the golden channel due to its clean signature and good total invariant mass resolution. In addition, the full kinematic distribution of the decay products can be reconstructed, which, nonetheless, is not taken into account in traditional search strategy relying only on measurements of the total invariant mass. In this work we implement a type of multivariate analysis known as the matrix element method, which exploits differences in the full production and decay matrix elements between the Higgs boson and the dominant irreducible background from q bar{q} -> ZZ*. Analytic expressions of the differential distributions for both the signal and the background are also presented. We perform a study for the Large Hadron Collider at sqrt{s}=7 TeV for Higgs masses between 175 and 350 GeV. We find that, with an integrated luminosity of 2.5 fb^-1 or higher, improvements in the order of 10 - 20 % could be obtained for both discovery significance and exclusion limits in the high mass region, where the differences in the angular correlations between signal and background are most pronounced.Comment: 31 pages, 8 figures. v2: Minus signs in definitions of angles corrected.     Konvergenzen und Divergenzen zwischen dem ost- und westdeutschen Management: Ergebnisse einer Befragung von Leitern mittelständischer Industrieunternehmen in Ost- und Westdeutschland

    Im Kontext des übergreifenden Forschungsprogramms 'Gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen nach dem Systemumbruch. Diskontinuität, Tradition und Strukturbildung' präsentieren die Autoren in ihrem Beitrag empirische Ergebnisse zu dem Teilprojekt 'Generationswechsel im Management - Persistenz oder Wandel der Managementstrategien in Ost- und Westdeutschland'. Bei der durchgeführten Erhebung handelt es sich um eine computerunterstützte Telefonbefragung (CATI) von 799 Personen mit einem standardisierten Fragebogen. Der Untersuchungsgegenstand ist eingebettet bzw. geprägt durch die Herausforderungen, die im Zuge globaler Entwicklungen zu erwarten sind, sowie durch den Wandel der ostdeutschen Industrie, der immer noch durch Langfristfolgen der Wendezeit beeinflusst wird. Dem gemäß konzentriert sich die Analyse auf zwei thematische Schwerpunkte: (1) die Ost/West-Unterschiede in Form eines Vergleichs zwischen dem ostdeutschen und westdeutschen Management sowie zwischen ost- und westdeutschen Betrieben; (2) die Generations- bzw. Altersunterschiede zwischen einzelnen Geburtskohorten. Die Ausführungen gliedern sich in die folgenden Aspekte: (1) Struktur der mittelständischen Industrieunternehmen, (2) Veränderungen der Unternehmensfinanzierung im Mittelstand, (3) soziale Struktur des mittelständischen Topmanagements, (3) Arbeits- und Sozialbeziehungen zwischen Management und Belegschaft, (4) gesellschaftspolitische Orientierungen der Unternehmensleiter, (5) Leitbilder von Managementstrategien der betrieblichen Restrukturierung sowie (6) Führungswechsel und Unternehmensübergabe. Im Schlusskapitel werden die präsentierten Ergebnisse über Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen Geburtskohorten sowie der ost- und westdeutschen Managementkulturen zu Aussagen über Entwicklungstrends und Wandlungstendenzen verdichtet. Im Wesentlichen sprechen die Ergebnisse für die Kontinuität eines eigenständigen 'westdeutschen' Managementmodells, welches auch nach Ostdeutschland 'ausstrahlt'. Welchen Verlauf der Einfluss von Akteuren und institutionellen Rahmenbedingungen auf die Entwicklung von Divergenzen und Konvergenzen zwischen ostdeutschem und westdeutschem Management nehmen wird, kann erst durch den Einbezug weiterer Panelwellen der Untersuchung deutlich herausgearbeitet werden

    Baryon Number in Warped GUTs : Model Building and (Dark Matter Related) Phenomenology

    In the past year, a new non-supersymmetric framework for electroweak symmetry breaking (with or without Higgs) involving SU(2)_L * SU(2)_R * U(1)_{B-L} in higher dimensional warped geometry has been suggested. In this work, we embed this gauge structure into a GUT such as SO(10) or Pati-Salam. We showed recently (in hep-ph/0403143) that in a warped GUT, a stable Kaluza-Klein fermion can arise as a consequence of imposing proton stability. Here, we specify a complete realistic model where this particle is a weakly interacting right-handed neutrino, and present a detailed study of this new dark matter candidate, providing relic density and detection predictions. We discuss phenomenological aspects associated with the existence of other light (<~ TeV) KK fermions (related to the neutrino), whose lightness is a direct consequence of the top quark's heaviness. The AdS/CFT interpretation of this construction is also presented.     Unstable states in QED of strong magnetic fields

    We question the use of stable asymptotic scattering states in QED of strong magnetic fields. To correctly describe excited Landau states and photons above the pair creation threshold the asymptotic fields are chosen as generalized Licht fields. In this way the off-shell behavior of unstable particles is automatically taken into account, and the resonant divergences that occur in scattering cross sections in the presence of a strong external magnetic field are avoided. While in a limiting case the conventional electron propagator with Breit-Wigner form is obtained, in this formalism it is also possible to calculate SS-matrix elements with external unstable particles.Comment: Revtex, 7 pages.     The development and characteristics of a hand-held high power diode laser-based industrial tile grout removal and single-stage sealing system

    As the field of laser materials processing becomes ever more diverse, the high power diode laser (HPDL) is now being regarded by many as the most applicable tool. The commercialisation of an industrial epoxy grout removal and single-stage ceramic tile grout sealing process is examined through the development of a hand-held HPDL device in this work. Further, an appraisal of the potential hazards associated with the use of the HPDL in an industrial environment and the solutions implemented to ensure that the system complies with the relevant safety standards are given. The paper describes the characteristics and feasibility of the industrial epoxy grout removal process. A minimum power density of approximately 3 kW/cm2 was found to exist, whilst the minimum interaction time, below which there was no removal of epoxy tile grout, was found to be approximately 0.5 s. The maximum theoretical removal rate that may be achievable was calculated as being 65.98 mm2/s for a circular 2 mm diameter beam with a power density of 3 kW/cm2 and a traverse speed of 42 mm/s. In addition, the characteristics of the single-stage ceramic tile grout sealing are outlined. The single-stage ceramic tile grout sealing process yielded crack and porosity free seals which were produced in normal atmospheric conditions. Tiles were successfully sealed with power densities as low as 550 W/cm2 and at rates of up to 420 mm/min. In terms of mechanical, physical and chemical characteristics, the single-stage ceramic tile grout was found to be far superior to the conventional epoxy tile grout and, in many instances, matched and occasionally surpassed that of the ceramic tiles themselves

    Worldvolume Superalgebra Of BLG Theory With Nambu-Poisson Structure

    Recently it was proposed that the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson theory with Nambu-Poisson structure describes an M5-brane in a three-form flux background. In this paper we investigate the superalgebra associated with this theory. We derive the central charges corresponding to M5-brane solitons in 3-form backgrounds. We also show that double dimensional reduction of the superalgebra gives rise to the Poisson bracket terms of a non-commutative D4-brane superalgebra. We provide interpretations of the D4-brane charges in terms of spacetime intersections.Comment: 23 pages; references added, section 4 clarification
