    Ascertaining and improving the quality of the course AC208, Company Law.

    Using questionaires surveys are done on year 2 and 3 accountancy students, accountancy graduates who are working in the public accounting firms and the employers of these accountancy graduates to gather their opinions about the quality of the course AC208. Quality is measured in terms of whether AC208 provides the students with the types of knowledge and the level of understanding, thus application of these knowledge, that the students or the potential employers of these student expect the course to provide. The results show that employers generally feel that quality is only average. While students and graduates feel that AC208 is of good quality, they also show some dissatisfaction with certain aspects with the way the course is conducted or assessed. These dissatisfaction represent areas that NTU can improve on, thus improve the quality in the eyes of the employers

    Comparison of Anti-oncotic Effect of TRPM4 Blocking Antibody in Neuron, Astrocyte and Vascular Endothelial Cell Under Hypoxia

    In stroke and other neurological diseases, Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin 4 (TRPM4) has been reported to cause oncotic cell death which is due to an excessive influx of sodium ions. Following stroke, hypoxia condition activates TRPM4 channel, and the sodium influx via TRPM4 is further enhanced by an increased TRPM4 expression. However, the effect of TRPM4 inhibition on oncotic cell death, particularly during the acute stage, remains largely unknown. Recently, we have developed a polyclonal antibody M4P that specifically inhibits TRPM4 channel. M4P blocks the channel via binding to a region close to the channel pore from extracellular space. Using M4P, we evaluated the acute effect of blocking TRPM4 in neurons, astrocytes, and vascular endothelial cells. In a rat stroke model, M4P co-localized with neuronal marker NeuN and endothelial marker vWF, whereas few GFAP positive astrocytes were stained by M4P in the ipsilateral hemisphere. When ATP was acutely depleted in cultured cortical neurons and microvascular endothelial cells, cell swelling was induced. Application of M4P significantly blocked TRPM4 current and attenuated oncosis. TUNEL assay, PI staining and western blot on cleaved Caspase-3 revealed that M4P could ameliorate apoptosis after 24 h hypoxia exposure. In contrast, acute ATP depletion in cultured astrocytes failed to demonstrate an increase of cell volume, and application of M4P or control IgG had no effect on cell volume change. When TRPM4 was overexpressed in astrocytes, acute ATP depletion successfully induced oncosis which could be suppressed by M4P treatment. Our results demonstrate that comparing to astrocytes, neurons, and vascular endothelial cells are more vulnerable to hypoxic injury.     Comparison of tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion with fractional area change for the evaluation of right ventricular systolic function: a meta-analysis

    Background - Accurate determination of right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF) is challenging because of the unique geometry of the right ventricle. Tricuspidannular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) and fractional area change (FAC) are commonly used echocardiographic quantitative estimates of RV function. Cardiac MRI (CMRI) has emerged as the gold standard for assessment of RVEF. We sought to summarise the available data on correlation of TAPSE and FAC with CMRI-derived RVEF and to compare their accuracy. Methods - We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, CINAHL, ClinicalTrials.gov and the Cochrane Library databases for studies that assessed the correlation of TAPSE or FAC with CMRI-derived RVEF. Data from each study selected were pooled and analysed to compare the correlation coefficient of TAPSE and FAC with CMRI-derived RVEF. Subgroup analysis was performed on patients with pulmonary hypertension. Results - Analysis of data from 17 studies with a total of 1280 patients revealed that FAC had a higher correlation with CMRI-derived RVEF compared with TAPSE (0.56vs0.40, P=0.018). In patients with pulmonary hypertension, there was no statistical difference in the mean correlation coefficient of FAC and TAPSE to CMR (0.57vs0.46, P=0.16). Conclusions - FAC provides a more accurate estimate of RV systolic function (RVSF) compared with TAPSE. Adoption of FAC as a routine tool for the assessment of RVSF should be considered, especially since it is also an independent predictor of morbidity and mortality. Further studies will be needed to compare other methods of echocardiographic measurement of RV function.Open Access Article.     Benefit of statin pretreatment in prevention of contrast-induced nephropathy in different adult patient population: systematic review and meta-analysis

    UA Open Access Publishing FundObjective: Previous studies have suggested that statin pretreatment prevents contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN). However, single randomised trials are limited in their number of patients. This meta-analysis aims to assess the role of statin use in CIN prevention, as well as to determine patient subgroups that will benefit from statin pre-treatment. Methodology: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Web of science and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases for randomised controlled trials (RCT) comparing statin pretreatment versus placebo for preventing CIN. Our main outcome was the risk of CIN within 1–5 days after contrast administration. Results: Data analysed from nine randomised studies with a total of 5143 patients, where 2559 received statins and 2584 received placebo, showed that statin pretreatment was associated with significant reduction in risk of CIN (MH-RR=0.47, 95% CI 0.34 to 0.64, Z=4.49, p<0.00001). This beneficial effect of statin was also seen in patients with baseline renal impairment (MH-RR=0.46, 95% CI 0.29 to 0.72, p=0.0008) and also those who were cotreated with NAC (MH-RR=0.46, 95% CI 0.25 to 0.83, p=0.01). Conclusions: Statin pretreatment leads to significant reduction in CIN, and should be strongly considered in all patients who are planned for diagnostic and interventional procedures involving contrast-media administration.This item from the UA Faculty Publications collection is made available by the University of Arizona with support from the University of Arizona Libraries.
