    Beyond Simulation: Computer Aided Control System Design Using Equation-Based Object Oriented Modelling for the Next Decade

    After 20 years since their birth, equation-oriented and object-oriented modelling techniques and tools are now mature, as far as solving simulation problems is concerned. Conversely, there is still much to be done in order to provide more direct support for the design of advanced, model-based control systems, starting from object-oriented plant models. Following a brief review of the current state of the art in this field, the paper presents some proposals for future developments: open model exchange formats, automatic model-order reduction techniques, automatic derivation of simplified transfer functions, automatic derivation of LFT models, automatic generation of inverse models for robotic systems, and support for nonlinear model predictive control

    Plasmonic trapping with realistic dipole nanoantennas: Analysis of the detection limit

    We use numerical simulations based on the surface integral technique to study the detection limit of plasmonic trapping with realistic dipole antennas. The induced plasmon resonance shift due to the coupling between an antenna and a nanoparticle is studied for different antennas geometries, different positions, sizes, and materials for the trapped nanoparticle. The shift of the antenna resonance is found to be linear with the near-field intensity enhancement caused by the antenna and further dependents on the volume and refractive index of the trapped nanoparticle. Detection limit of 5 nm for plasmonic particles and 6.5 nm for high index dielectrics is reported

    Flexible Drought Deciduousness in a Neotropical Understory Herb

    PREMISE OF THE STUDY Adaptive divergence across environmental gradients is a key driver of speciation. Precipitation seasonality gradients are common in the tropics, yet drought adaptation is nearly unexplored in neotropical understory herbs. We examine two recently diverged neotropical spiral gingers, one adapted to seasonal drought and one reliant on perennial water, to uncover the basis of drought adaptation. METHODS We combine ecophysiological trait measurements in the field and greenhouse with experimental and observational assessment of real-time drought response to determine how Costus villosissimus (Costaceae) differs from C. allenii to achieve drought adaptation. KEY RESULTS We find that drought-adapted C. villosissimus has several characteristics indicating flexible dehydration avoidance via semi-drought-deciduousness and a fast economic strategy. Although the two species do not differ in water use efficiency, C. villosissimus has a more rapid growth rate, lower leaf mass per area, lower stem density, higher leaf nitrogen, and a strong trend of greater light-saturated photosynthetic rates. These fast economic strategy traits align with both field-based observations and experimental dry-down results. When faced with drought, C. villosissimus displays facultative drought-deciduousness, losing lower leaves during the dry season and rapidly growing new leaves in the wet season. CONCLUSIONS We reveal a drought adaptation strategy that has not, to our knowledge, previously been documented in tropical herbs. This divergent drought adaptation evolved recently and is an important component of reproductive isolation between C. villosissimus and C. allenii, indicating that adaptive shifts to survive seasonal drought may be an underappreciated axis of neotropical understory plant diversification

    Detecting the trapping of small metal nanoparticles in the gap of nanoantennas with optical second harmonic generation

    The second harmonic generation from gold nanoparticles trapped into realistic and idealized gold nanoantennas is numerically investigated using a surface integral equations technique. It is observed that the presence of a nanoparticle in the nanoantenna gap dramatically modifies the second harmonic intensity scattered into the far-field. These results clearly demonstrate that second harmonic generation is a promising alternative to the conventional linear optical methods for the detection of trapping events at the nanoscale

    Physiological effects of environmental acidification in the deep-sea urchin <i>Strongylocentrotus fragilis</i>

    Anthropogenic CO<sub>2</sub> is now reaching depths over 1000 m in the Eastern Pacific, overlapping the Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ). Deep-sea animals are suspected to be especially sensitive to environmental acidification associated with global climate change. We have investigated the effects of elevated <i>p</i>CO<sub>2</sub> and variable O<sub>2</sub> on the deep-sea urchin <i>Strongylocentrotus fragilis</i>, a species whose range of 200–1200 m depth includes the OMZ and spans a <i>p</i>CO<sub>2</sub> range of approx. 600–1200 ÎŒatm (approx. pH 7.6 to 7.8). Individuals were evaluated during two exposure experiments (1-month and 4 month) at control and three levels of elevated <i>p</i>CO<sub>2</sub> at in situ O<sub>2</sub> levels of approx. 10% air saturation. A treatment of control <i>p</i>CO<sub>2</sub> at 100% air saturation was also included in experiment two. During the first experiment, perivisceral coelomic fluid (PCF) acid-base balance was investigated during a one-month exposure; results show <i>S. fragilis</i> has limited ability to compensate for the respiratory acidosis brought on by elevated <i>p</i>CO<sub>2</sub>, due in part to low non-bicarbonate PCF buffering capacity. During the second experiment, individuals were separated into fed and fasted experimental groups, and longer-term effects of elevated <i>p</i>CO<sub>2</sub> and variable O<sub>2</sub> on righting time, feeding, growth, and gonadosomatic index (GSI) were investigated for both groups. Results suggest that the acidosis found during experiment one does not directly correlate with adverse effects during exposure to realistic future <i>p</i>CO<sub>2</sub> levels
