    Critical Cooperation Range to Improve Spatial Network Robustness

    A robust worldwide air-transportation network (WAN) is one that minimizes the number of stranded passengers under a sequence of airport closures. Building on top of this realistic example, here we address how spatial network robustness can profit from cooperation between local actors. We swap a series of links within a certain distance, a cooperation range, while following typical constraints of spatially embedded networks. We find that the network robustness is only improved above a critical cooperation range. Such improvement can be described in the framework of a continuum transition, where the critical exponents depend on the spatial correlation of connected nodes. For the WAN we show that, except for Australia, all continental networks fall into the same universality class. Practical implications of this result are also discussed

    An Investigation of the KFK_{F}-type Lorentz-Symmetry Breaking Gauge Models in N=1N=1-Supersymmetric Scenario

    In this work, we present two possible venues to accomodate the KFK_{F}-type Lorentz-symmetry violating Electrodynamics in an N=1N=1-supersymmetric framework. A chiral and a vector superfield are chosen to describe the background that signals Lorentz-symmetry breaking. In each case, the  Kμνκλ\ K_{\mu \nu \kappa \lambda }-tensor is expressed in terms of the components of the background superfield that we choose to describe the breaking. We also present in detail the actions with all fermionic partners of the background that determine  Kμνκλ\ K_{\mu \nu \kappa \lambda }.Comment: 10 page

    Impact demagnetization of the Martian crust: Current knowledge and future directions

    The paleomagnetism of the Martian crust has important implications for the history of the dynamo, the intensity of the ancient magnetic field, and the composition of the crust. Modification of crustal magnetization by impact cratering is evident from the observed lack of a measurable crustal field (at spacecraft altitude) within the youngest large impact basins (e.g., Hellas, Argyre and Isidis). It is hoped that comparisons of the magnetic intensity over impact structures, forward modeling of subsurface magnetization, and experimental results of pressure-induced demagnetization of rocks and minerals will provide constraints on the primary magnetic mineralogy in the Martian crust. Such an effort requires: (i) accurate knowledge of the spatial distribution of the shock pressures around impact basins, (ii) crustal magnetic intensity maps of adequate resolution over impact structures, and (iii) determination of demagnetization properties for individual rocks and minerals under compression. In this work, we evaluate the current understanding of these three conditions and compile the available experimental pressure demagnetization data on samples bearing (titano-) magnetite, (titano-) hematite, and pyrrhotite. We find that all samples demagnetize substantially at pressures of a few GPa and that the available data support significant modification of the crustal magnetic field from both large and small impact events. However, the amount of demagnetization with applied pressure does not vary significantly among the possible carrier phases. Therefore, the presence of individual mineral phases on Mars cannot be determined from azimuthally averaged demagnetization profiles over impact basins at present. The identification of magnetic mineralogy on Mars will require more data on pressure demagnetization of thermoremanent magnetization and forward modeling of the crustal field subject to a range of plausible initial field and demagnetization patterns.United States.     A framework for information dissemination in social networks using Hawkes processes

    International audienceWe define in this paper a general Hawkes-based framework to model information diffusion in social networks. The proposed framework takes into consideration the hidden interactions between users as well as the interactions between contents and social networks, and can also accommodate dynamic social networks and various temporal effects of the diffusion, which provides a complete analysis of the hidden influences in social networks. This framework can be combined with topic modeling, for which modified collapsed Gibbs sampling and variational Bayes techniques are derived. We provide an estimation algorithm based on nonnegative tensor factorization techniques, which together with a dimensionality reduction argument are able to discover , in addition, the latent community structure of the social network. At last, we provide numerical examples from real-life networks: a Game of Thrones and a MemeTracker datasets

    O efeito da umidade do solo na biologia de Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch) em plantas de milho (Zea mays) foi avaliado em casa de vegetação. Foi utilizado o delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com três tratamentos (20%, 40% e 100% de rotação hídrica) e quatro repetições, sendo cada parcela experimental constituída por um vaso de polietileno de cinco litros contendo duas plantas de milho no estádio fenológico três e com dez pulgões adultos confinados em microgaiolas de 10 mm de altura por 10 mm de diâmetro (cinco pulgões/microgaiola/planta), perfazendo um total de 40 pulgões/tratamento. As variáveis biológicas do pulgão estudadas foram: a duração de cada instar, dos períodos pré-reprodutivo, pós-reprodutivo e reprodutivo, a produção diária, total de ninfas e de alados e o ciclo de vida de R. maidis. Houve efeito da umidade do solo onde estavam as plantas de milho, tanto na duração do desenvolvimento dos pulgões, em cada um dos quatro ínstares, quanto na duração da fase ninfal, sendo que os pulgões que se desenvolveram em plantas de milho com défice de água de 80% completaram os estádios ninfais num menor período. De igual forma, o período reprodutivo e a longevidade dos adultos foram mais curtos nos pulgões que se desenvolveram em plantas de milho em solo com 20% da capacidade de campo. Porém, não houve efeito dos tratamentos na duração do período pós-reprodutivo. Por outro lado, adultos de pulgões que se desenvolveram nas plantas em solo com 20% da água necessária produziram a primeira ninfa num menor período do que os desenvolvidos nas plantas que receberam 40% de água na capacidade de campo. Pulgões cuja fase jovem ocorreu em plantas de milho sob estresse hídrico de 80% desapareceram mais rapidamente do que aqueles desenvolvidos em plantas sob regime de estresse hídrico de 60%. Esses resultados indicam que o manejo da água no milho pode ser uma estratégia no controle de fatores naturais que afetam tanto a população como o número de gerações do pulgão no ambiente, podendo reduzir a necessidade do controle químico

    Ultra-processed food consumption and obesity in the Australian adult population

    Background: Rapid simultaneous increases in ultra-processed food sales and obesity prevalence have been observed worldwide, including in Australia. Consumption of ultra-processed foods by the Australian population was previously shown to be systematically associated with increased risk of intakes of nutrients outside levels recommended for the prevention of obesity. This study aims to explore the association between ultra-processed food consumption and obesity among the Australian adult population and stratifying by age group, sex and physical activity level. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis of anthropometric and dietary data from 7411 Australians aged ≥20 years from the National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey 2011–2012 was performed. Food consumption was evaluated through 24-h recall. The NOVA system was used to identify ultra-processed foods, i.e. industrial formulations manufactured from substances derived from foods and typically added of flavours, colours and other cosmetic additives, such as soft drinks, confectionery, sweet or savoury packaged snacks, microwaveable frozen meals and fast food dishes. Measured weight, height and waist circumference (WC) data were used to calculate the body mass index (BMI) and diagnosis of obesity and abdominal obesity. Regression models were used to evaluate the association of dietary share of ultra-processed foods (quintiles) and obesity indicators, adjusting for socio-demographic variables, physical activity and smoking. Results: Significant (P-trend ≤ 0.001) direct dose–response associations between the dietary share of ultra-processed foods and indicators of obesity were found after adjustment. In the multivariable regression analysis, those in the highest quintile of ultra-processed food consumption had significantly higher BMI (0.97 kg/m2; 95% CI 0.42, 1.51) and WC (1.92 cm; 95% CI 0.57, 3.27) and higher odds of having obesity (OR = 1.61; 95% CI 1.27, 2.04) and abdominal obesity (OR = 1.38; 95% CI 1.10, 1.72) compared with those in the lowest quintile of consumption. Subgroup analyses showed that the trend towards positive associations for all obesity indicators remained in all age groups, sex and physical activity level. Conclusion: The findings add to the growing evidence that ultra-processed food consumption is associated with obesity and support the potential role of ultra-processed foods in contributing to obesity in Australia
