Tune Measurements in the SPS as a Multicycling Machine
Throughout the operation cycle of the SPS different particles are accelerated : High intensity protons, leptons and heavy ions. For each particle type a measurement of the betatron tunes along the acceleration cycle is required. The paper describes the different excitation and data analysis methods used in order to minimize beam blow-up during the measurements (protons) or in order to optimize the time resolution (leptons). Measurement examples are given

Forgiveness and Prayer
Forgiveness and prayer are both topics of contemporary social science research, but they are not often considered together. The present study investigates how Christian respondents portray prayer when describing the process of interpersonal forgiveness. Just over half of the respondents mentioned prayer as an important part of forgiveness at their first opportunity in a structured interview protocol. Prayer responses were coded as inward, upward, or outward, with inward prayers being the most common. The narrative descriptions of inward prayer resemble Worthington\u27s (2001, 2003) REACH model of the forgiveness process
Designing Chatbots for Crises: A Case Study Contrasting Potential and Reality
Chatbots are becoming ubiquitous technologies, and their popularity and adoption are rapidly spreading. The potential of chatbots in engaging people with digital services is fully recognised. However, the reputation of this technology with regards to usefulness and real impact remains rather questionable. Studies that evaluate how people perceive and utilise chatbots are generally lacking. During the last Kenyan elections, we deployed a chatbot on Facebook Messenger to help people submit reports of violence and misconduct experienced in the polling stations. Even though the chatbot was visited by more than 3,000 times, there was a clear mismatch between the users’ perception of the technology and its design. In this paper, we analyse the user interactions and content generated through this application and discuss the challenges and directions for designing more effective chatbots
LHC Transverse Feedback System: First Results of Commissionning
A powerful transverse feedback system ("Damper") has been installed in LHC. It will stabilise the high intensity beam against coupled bunch transverse instabilities in a frequency range from 3 kHz to 20 MHz and at the same time damp injection oscillations originating from steering errors and injection kicker ripple. The LHC Damper can also be used as means of exciting transverse oscillations for the purposes of abort gap cleaning and tune measurement. The LHC Damper includes 4 feedback systems on 2 circulating beams (in other words one feedback system per beam and plane). Every feedback system consists of 4 electrostatic kickers, 4 push-pull wide band power amplifiers, 8 preamplifiers, two digital processing units and 2 beam position monitors with low-level electronics. The power and low-level subsystem layout is described along with first results from the commissioning of 16 power amplifiers and 16 electrostatic kickers located in the LHC tunnel. The achieved performance is compared with earlier predictions and requirements for injection damping and instability control. Requirements and first measurements of the performance of the power and low-level subsystems are summarized

Empathy, engagement, entrainment: the interaction dynamics of aesthetic experience
A recent version of the view that aesthetic experience is based in empathy as inner
imitation explains aesthetic experience as the automatic simulation of actions,
emotions, and bodily sensations depicted in an artwork by motor neurons in the brain. Criticizing the simulation theory for committing to an erroneous concept of empathy and failing to distinguish regular from aesthetic experiences of art, I advance an alternative, dynamic approach and claim that aesthetic experience is enacted and skillful, based in the recognition of others’ experiences as distinct from one’s own. In combining insights from mainly psychology, phenomenology, and cognitive science, the dynamic approach aims to explain the emergence of aesthetic experience in terms of the reciprocal interaction between viewer and artwork. I argue that aesthetic experience emerges by participatory sense-making and revolves around movement as a means for creating meaning. While entrainment merely plays a preparatory part in this, aesthetic engagement constitutes the phenomenological side of coupling to an artwork and provides the context for exploration, and eventually for moving, seeing, and feeling with art. I submit that aesthetic experience emerges from bodily and emotional engagement with works of art via the complementary processes of the perception–action and motion–emotion loops. The former involves the embodied
visual exploration of an artwork in physical space, and progressively structures and organizes visual experience by way of perceptual feedback from body movements made in response to the artwork. The latter concerns the movement qualities and shapes of implicit and explicit bodily responses to an artwork that cue emotion and thereby modulate over-all affect and attitude. The two processes cause the viewer to bodily and emotionally move with and be moved by individual works of art, and consequently to recognize another psychological orientation than her own, which explains how art can cause feelings of insight or awe and disclose aspects of life that are unfamiliar or novel to the viewer
ReadNet: A Hierarchical Transformer Framework for Web Article Readability Analysis
Analyzing the readability of articles has been an important sociolinguistic
task. Addressing this task is necessary to the automatic recommendation of
appropriate articles to readers with different comprehension abilities, and it
further benefits education systems, web information systems, and digital
libraries. Current methods for assessing readability employ empirical measures
or statistical learning techniques that are limited by their ability to
characterize complex patterns such as article structures and semantic meanings
of sentences. In this paper, we propose a new and comprehensive framework which
uses a hierarchical self-attention model to analyze document readability. In
this model, measurements of sentence-level difficulty are captured along with
the semantic meanings of each sentence. Additionally, the sentence-level
features are incorporated to characterize the overall readability of an article
with consideration of article structures. We evaluate our proposed approach on
three widely-used benchmark datasets against several strong baseline
approaches. Experimental results show that our proposed method achieves the
state-of-the-art performance on estimating the readability for various web
articles and literature.Comment: ECIR 202
Substrate specificity of a long-chain alkylamine-degrading Pseudomonas sp isolated from activated sludge
A bacterium strain BERT, which utilizes primary long-chain alkylamines as nitrogen, carbon and energy source, was isolated from activated sludge. This rod-shaped motile, Gram-negative strain was identified as a Pseudomonas sp. The substrate spectrum of this Pseudomonas strain BERT includes primary alkylamines with alkyl chains ranging from C3 to C18, and dodecyl-1,3-diaminopropane. Amines with alkyl chains ranging from 8 to 14 carbons were the preferred substrates. Growth on dodecanal, dodecanoic acid and acetic acid and simultaneous adaptation studies indicated that this bacterium initiates degradation through a Calkyl–N cleavage. The cleavage of alkylamines to the respective alkanals in Pseudomonas strain BERT is mediated by a PMS-dependent alkylamine dehydrogenase. This alkylamine dehydrogenase produces stoichiometric amounts of ammonium from octylamine. The PMS-dependent alkylamine was found to oxidize a broad range of long-chain alkylamines. PMS-dependent long-chain aldehyde dehydrogenase activity was also detected in cell-free extract of Pseudomonas strain BERT grown on octylamine. The proposed pathway for the oxidation of alkylamine in strain BERT proceeds from alkylamine to alkanal, and then to the fatty acid
