Cooperating Teachers as School Based Teacher Educators : Student Teachers\u27 Expectations

    Get PDF
The National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore adapted and implemented a Partnership Model with schools in 1999 to help student teachers translate what they have learned in the teacher education programme into practice during the Practicum. This was realized through the utilization of classroom practitioners as cooperating teachers (CTs) to monitor and supervise student teacher’s teaching. This study explored the expectations of the student teachers from their cooperating teachers and the type and level of help they received from their cooperating teachers during the practicum. The areas in which help is desired and considered important by student teachers fall under four broad categories: help in teaching the curriculum subjects, help in classroom management, information to function well in the school environment, and help in evaluating and providing feedback on their teaching. The level of help provided in these areas was below the level of student teachers’ expectations. The article suggests how the role and status of the CTs may be improved to become effective partners in teacher education

Total absolute difference edge irregularity strength of some families of graphs

A total labeling ξ is defined to be an edge irregular total absolute difference k-labeling of the graph G if for every two different edges e and f of G there is wt(e) ≠ wt(f) where weight of an edge e = xy is defined as wt(e) = |ξ(e) − ξ(x) − ξ(y)|. The minimum k for which the graph G has an edge irregular total absolute difference labeling is called the total absolute difference edge irregularity strength of the graph G, tades(G). In this paper, we determine the total absolute difference edge irregularity strength of the precise values for some families of graphs.Publisher's Versio

Expression alterations define unique molecular characteristics of spinal ependymomas

Ependymomas are glial tumors that originate in either intracranial or spinal regions. Although tumors from different regions are histologically similar, they are biologically distinct. We therefore sought to identify molecular characteristics of spinal ependymomas (SEPN) in order to better understand the disease biology of these tumors. Using gene expression profiles of 256 tumor samples, we identified increased expression of 1,866 genes in SEPN when compared to intracranial ependymomas. These genes are mainly related to anterior/posterior pattern specification, response to oxidative stress, glial cell differentiation, DNA repair, and PPAR signalling, and also significantly enriched with cellular senescence genes (P = 5.5 × 10-03). In addition, a high number of significantly down-regulated genes in SEPN are localized to chromosome 22 (81 genes from chr22: 43,325,255 – 135,720,974; FDR = 1.77 × 10-23 and 22 genes from chr22: 324,739 – 32,822,302; FDR = 2.07 × 10-09) including BRD1, EP300, HDAC10, HIRA, HIC2, MKL1, and NF2. Evaluation of NF2 co-expressed genes further confirms the enrichment of chromosome 22 regions. Finally, systematic integration of chromosome 22 genes with interactome and NF2 co-expression data identifies key candidate genes. Our results reveal unique molecular characteristics of SEPN such as altered expression of cellular senescence and chromosome 22 genes

Improving the quality of education is possibly the greatest educational challenge faced by developing countries. Thus. with financial support from IDRC (Canada) and manpower resources from the Ministry of Education, a group of educationists based at the Universiti Sains Malaysia in 1977, embarked on a Research and Development project to test out an iintegrated strategy of programmed instruction to improve the quality of rural primary education. Although the project's work was overtaken by drastic reform of the national educational system. this paper examines whether the first three years of InSpire programme (from Std. 1 - 3) had any lasting carry-over effect which could be evaluated through the Std. 5 National Assessment Examination

    On SD-Harmonious Labeling

    Get PDF
A graph G is said to be SD-harmonious labeling if there exists an injection f: V(G) -> {0,1,2,...,q} such that the induced function f*: E(G) ->{0,2,...,2q-2} defined by f(uv)=S+D (mod 2q) is bijective, where S=f(u)+f(v) and D=|f(u)-f(v)|, for every edge uv in E(G). A graph which admits SD-harmonious labeling is called SD-harmonious graph. In this paper, we investigate SD-harmonious labeling of path related graphs, tree related graphs, star related graphs and disjoint union of graphs

Spontaneous bacterial empyema in a non cirrhotic end stage renal disease patient with immunosuppression

AbstractSpontaneous Bacterial Empyema (SBEM) denotes infection of the pleural fluid in the absence of pneumonia. Almost all cases of SBEM in literature are described in a background of ascites secondary to cirrhosis. Contiguous spread of the infected ascitic fluid through defects in the diaphragm is the most likely mechanism of SBEM. Most of these cases are transudative in nature and are managed with antibiotics. Literature on SBEM in the absence of cirrhosis or ascites is very limited so far. We describe a 59 year old female with ESRD status post renal transplant, on chronic immunosuppression for renal allograft rejection who was admitted with pleuritic chest pain that turned to be secondary to right sided pleural effusion. Further evaluation revealed Escherichia coli in both the blood and pleural fluid. There was no clinical or imaging evidence of pneumonia as well as cirrhosis or ascites. She was managed as a case of SBEM requiring drainage by chest tube. Management of SBEM in non-cirrhotic individuals usually requires drainage with chest tube as against patients with liver cirrhosis with hepatic hydro-thorax in whom chest tube drainage is contraindicated for risk of massive protein and electrolyte depletion and dehydration
