    Get PDF
Introduction and Objective: To report a rare case of a patient who presented two mesiodens and the treatment performed at two moments. Case report: A 7 year-old male patient reported a supernumerary tooth extracted at age 4. The dental clinical exam revealed giroversion of permanent maxillary right central incisor. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBTC) revealed a presence of a mesiodens located at the buccal surface mesially to the permanent maxillary left central incisor and also indicated that the mesiodens was located close tothe f loor of the nasal cavity. The surgery was performed with a conservative intervention and osteotomy by preserving the adjacent structure. The one-year following-up post-operative x-ray indicated new bone deposition and a more favorable eruption position of the right permanent maxillary lateral incisor. Conclusion: It can be concluded that an early diagnosis by CBTC allowed an adequate treatment planning, which avoid the formation of cysts and a prolonged retention of permanent tooth

The success of oral reabilitation treatment depend on the re-establishment of the masticatory function and oral comfort of the patient. Objective: To evaluate the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of patients undergoing rehabilitation with implant-supported prostheses by Oral Health Impact Profile - short form questionnaire (OHIP-14) and a questionnaire associated to the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Material and methods: Fourteen patients requiring implant-supported prostheses on anterior region were asked to complete the OHIP-14 before, 1 and 3 months, and the VAS questionnaire, 1 and 3 months after the prosthesis installation (sample group). Moreover, fourteen complete dentate patients were asked to complete the OHIP-14 (control group). For each OHIP-14 category, the sample group’s answers were compared between the evaluation periods by the Kruskal-Wallis test, and to the control group’s answers by the U-test. The answers of the questionnaire associated to VAS were compared between the evaluation periods by t-test ( α=0.05). Results: For OHIP-14, there was no statistical difference between the answers after 1 and 3 months; however, there was difference among the answers of baseline, and 1 and 3 months after the prostheses installation, excepted for functional limitation. Comparing to the control group, before the prostheses installation, there was statistical difference for functional limitation, physical pain, psychological discomfort, physical and psychological disability; and, there was no difference after 3 months of prostheses installation. For the questionnaire associated to the VAS, there was no statistical difference between the responses for both evaluation periods, excepted for the prosthesis’ comfort and stability. Conclusion: The rehabilitated patients showed a significant improvement in function, aesthetics, self-esteem, and the quality of life. The success of oral reabilitation treatment depend on the re-establishment of the masticatory function and oral comfort of the patient. Introduction and Objective: To evaluate the shear bond strength of brackets fixed with different materials (two light-cured nanofilled low-viscosity resins –Transbond Supreme LV and Flow Tain LV and two light-cured traditional resins – Transbond XT and Transbond Plus Color Change) after 10 min and 24 h, and to evaluate the type of failure. Material and methods: Eighty bovine incisors were selected and randomly divided into groups (n = 10) according to the material and fixation period. The brackets were bonded following the manufacturer's instructions and stored in deionized water at 37 oC for  10 min or 24 h. After, the specimens were submitted to shear bond strength test at 0.5 mm/min and evaluated for adhesive remnant index (ARI). The data were submitted to Kruskal Wallis and Wilcoxon tests (p Transbond Plus Color Change > Transbond  upreme LV = Flow Tain LV and after 24 h – Transbond XT > Transbond Plus Color Change = Transbond Supreme LV =  Flow Tain LV). There was osignificant difference in resistance values between 10 min and 24 h, except for Transbond Plus Color Change. Most groups showed adhesive remaining adhered to the enamel (scores 2 and 3) without statistical significant difference (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The light-cured traditional resins showed higher resistance than the nanofilled materials. The period of fixation had no influence on the resistance for different materials, except for Transbond Plus Color Change

The dentigerous cyst is a benign cyst associated with the development of odontogenic epithelium that covers the crown of impacted teeth. These are prevalent in the first three decades of life, reaching more often Caucasian males. Odontomas are hamartomas affecting the dental tissues, which can be divided into compound and complex odontoma. Odontoma affects children and young adults of both sexes, with a predilection for jaw bone. Case report: A 12-year-old boy attended the Pediatric Dentistry Clinic of Positivo University, complaining of pain in right parasymphysis region. The panoramic radiograph showed an impacted tooth (#43) located in base of the jaw below the apex of the teeth #31 to #42, with increased follicle. A radiopaque mass with small fragments of approximately 1 cm, located at the apex of the teeth #83 and #84 was seen. The patient underwent surgery under general anesthesia to remove the impacted tooth and radiopaque injury. Histopathological analysis of the dental follicle was compatible with dentigerous cyst and dental fragments were diagnosed as compound odontoma. The postoperative was uneventful, four months after the surgery the patient began orthodontic treatment for traction of tooth #44. Conclusion: Both lesions, dentigerous cyst and compound odontoma have favorable prognosis and low recurrence rate, but must be removed to maintain the integrity of the stomatognathic system. In this case was important the inter-relationship between dental specialties for the treatment of the patient

    No full text
The objective of this study was to present a classification of the root development stage of female rat molar teeth and to evaluate the variation in the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity and electrophoretic isoenzyme profile according to the stage of root development of the molar teeth. We also studied the LDH activity and isoenzymes of the pulp of incisor teeth. The stage of development of the rat first molar at the age of 15 days and that of the second molar at the age of 18 days was classified as the beginning of root formation. At the age of 15 days, the electrophoretic profile of the isoenzymes for the first molar showed a prevalence of LDH-1 followed by LDH-2. However, for the maxillary second molar there was a prevalence of LDH-4 followed by LDH-1, while for the mandibular second molar LDH-1 predominated followed by LDH-2 and LDH-4. From 18 days of age, the prevalence was always of LDH-1. The electrophoretic profile of LDH isoenzymes from the pulp of the incisor teeth at the ages studied (25 and 60 days) showed the following order of prevalence: LDH-1 > LDH-2 > LDH-3 > LDH-4 > LDH-5. These results suggest that there are variations in the prevalence of the various forms of LDH isoenzymes in the dental pulp of rats according to the developmental stage of the root

Abstract Anxiety is often observed in dental procedures and may cause promote alteration in the physiological responses during implant surgeries. Aim: To evaluate changes in blood pressure and heart rate in patients undergoing dental implant procedures, considering the dental setting as the main variable. Methods: Fifty-five patients who underwent dental implant surgery were evaluated. Thirty-seven were treated at a university clinic and 18 were treated at a private office. Blood pressure and heart rate were measured at the following time-points: at the appointment prior to surgery (T0), immediately before the surgical procedure (T1), during anesthesia (T2), during implant installation (T3), immediately after the surgical procedure (T4) and at the first follow-up appointment after surgery (T5). The data were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance and Student's t-test. Results: The university clinic patients had an increase in heart rate at T5 (t 53 =2.62, p<0.05) compared with private office patients. Systolic blood pressure in university clinic patients was higher at T2 (t 53 =2.86, p<0.01), T3 (t 53 =2.64, p<0.05), and T4 (t 53 =3.15, p<0.01). Diastolic blood pressure at T2 (t 53 =3.15, p<0.01) and T3 (t 53 =3.86, p<0.01) were also higher in university clinic patients. Conclusions: These results suggest that the dental setting is a relevant factor when planning dental implant surgery
