Learning and Social Difference, Challenges for Public Education and Critical pedagogy. Boulder, Colorado: Paradigm, 2006. Chapter 8,This paper discusses the pedagogical challenge of providing an education that stresses the connection between learning and power and the potential, for social solidarity, of a collective approach to learning based on a process of what Freire and other critical pedagogues would call âcritical literacy.â
The stimulus for such a pedagogical approach to citizenship derives from the legacy of a radical and very controversial Tuscan priest, Don Lorenzo Milani (1923-1967), and the students from an isolated and impoverished farming community in the Mugello region of Tuscany who constituted the School of Barbiana. The pedagogical ideas emanating from Lorenzo Milani and his school of Barbiana remain a source of reference in debates about schooling and social activism in Italy and elsewhere. The key text to emerge from this school, Lettera a Una Professoressa (Letter to a Teacher), was an important source of reference during the turbulent âsessantottoâ (1968) period in Italy. The paper provides an analysis of this and other works with whihc Lorenzo Milani was connected.peer-reviewe
Lorenzo Milani in our times
This article pays tribute to one of Europe's foremost critical pedagogues, the Tuscan Don Lorenzo Milani, on the ninetieth anniversary of his birth. It highlights the key moments in his life as priest and educator as well as his pedagogical approach directed at challenging the class-conditioned status quo in Italian society and at achieving greater social justice. His was a pedagogy which highlighted the collective dimensions of learning and teaching, pupils being students and educators at the same time, an approach to learning akin to what Paulo Freire would call critical literacy and what contemporary writers would call critical media literacy in the sense of reading and writing the word and the world. His pedagogy entailed a process of reading history against the grain as part of an attempt to generate a culture of non-militarization. All these elements make Don Milani and his student-teachers pedagogues for our times.peer-reviewe

Lorenzo Market between Diversity and Mutation
The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between the diversity of groups of workers and the local division of labour in the San Lorenzo Market, Florence, Italy. This empirical research may help distinguish the demographic, migratory and occupational patterns of the workers in accordance with their national origin. It shows that geographical origin is the key to the differences, specialisations and oppositions between the Florentines and the various groups of migrants on the one hand, and between these immigrant groups on the other hand. It shows too the mutation made by the conflict between global dynamics and a local labour market.San Lorenzo Market, Immigrant workers, Diversity, Local division of labour, Migratory trajectories

Data assimilation for the calibration of flume tests with different granular mixtures
open5siThe flow-type landslide (mud-flow, debris-flow, etc.) could often cause large economic and social damages. Besides the mechanisms that rule the triggering phenomena, the comprehension of their propagation behaviour represents an important aspect to be addressed, because from this issue it depends the reliability of different risk scenarios and the evaluation of mitigation strategies. The kinematic of these phenomena as well as the shape and the heights of the final deposit is related to the viscous character of the involved materials that in turn depends on the mutual concentration of the component phases: the water, the fine matrix and the coarser fraction. In order to understand the composition effects on the kinematic of flow-type landslides several flume tests were carried out using different kaolin-sand mixtures, and then simulated with a particle-based SPH code. The constitutive parameters derived from a laboratory characterization of two components were then fine-tunes by mean of a data assimilation numerical procedure in order to individuate the most suitable values for describing the observed propagation.openBrezzi, Lorenzo; Kaitna, Roland; Gabrieli, Fabio; Zulpo, Margherita; Cola, SimonettaBrezzi, Lorenzo; Kaitna, Roland; Gabrieli, Fabio; Zulpo, Margherita; Cola, Simonett
