    A Layman's guide to SUSY GUTs

    The determination of the most straightforward evidence for the existence of the Superworld requires a guide for non-experts (especially experimental physicists) for them to make their own judgement on the value of such predictions. For this purpose we review the most basic results of Super-Grand unification in a simple and clear way. We focus the attention on two specific models and their predictions. These two models represent an example of a direct comparison between a traditional unified-theory and a string-inspired approach to the solution of the many open problems of the Standard Model. We emphasize that viable models must satisfy {\em all} available experimental constraints and be as simple as theoretically possible. The two well defined supergravity models, SU(5)SU(5) and SU(5)×U(1)SU(5)\times U(1), can be described in terms of only a few parameters (five and three respectively) instead of the more than twenty needed in the MSSM model, \ie, the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. A case of special interest is the strict no-scale SU(5)×U(1)SU(5)\times U(1) supergravity where all predictions depend on only one parameter (plus the top-quark mass). A general consequence of these analyses is that supersymmetric particles can be at the verge of discovery, lurking around the corner at present and near future facilities.     Strongly misaligned triple system in SR 24 revealed by ALMA

    We report the detection of the 1.3 mm continuum and the molecular emission of the disks of the young triple system SR24 by analyzing ALMA (The Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimter Array) subarcsecond archival observations. We estimate the mass of the disks (0.025 M ⊙ and 4 × 10‑5 M ⊕ for SR24S and SR24N, respectively) and the dynamical mass of the protostars (1.5 M ⊙ and 1.1 M ⊙). A kinematic model of the SR24S disk to fit its C18O (2-1) emission allows us to develop an observational method to determine the tilt of a rotating and accreting disk. We derive the size, inclination, position angle, and sense of rotation of each disk, finding that they are strongly misaligned (108^circ ) and possibly rotate in opposite directions as seen from Earth, in projection. We compare the ALMA observations with 12CO SMA archival observations, which are more sensitive to extended structures. We find three extended structures and estimate their masses: a molecular bridge joining the disks of the system, a molecular gas reservoir associated with SR24N, and a gas streamer associated with SR24S. Finally, we discuss the possible origin of the misaligned SR24 system, concluding that a closer inspection of the northern gas reservoir is needed to better understand it. Fil: Fernandez Lopez, Manuel.     New Precision Electroweak Tests of SU(5) x U(1) Supergravity

    We explore the one-loop electroweak radiative corrections in SU(5)×U(1)SU(5)\times U(1) supergravity via explicit calculation of vacuum-polarization and vertex-correction contributions to the ϵ1\epsilon_1 and ϵb\epsilon_b parameters. Experimentally, these parameters are obtained from a global fit to the set of observables Γl,Γb,AFBl\Gamma_{l}, \Gamma_{b}, A^{l}_{FB}, and MW/MZM_W/M_Z. We include q2q^2-dependent effects, which induce a large systematic negative shift on ϵ1\epsilon_{1} for light chargino masses (m_{\chi^\pm_1}\lsim70\GeV). The (non-oblique) supersymmetric vertex corrections to \Zbb, which define the ϵb\epsilon_b parameter, show a significant positive shift for light chargino masses, which for tanβ2\tan\beta\approx2 can be nearly compensated by a negative shift from the charged Higgs contribution. We conclude that at the 90\%CL, for m_t\lsim160\GeV the present experimental values of ϵ1\epsilon_1 and ϵb\epsilon_b do not constrain in any way SU(5)×U(1)SU(5)\times U(1) supergravity in both no-scale and dilaton scenarios. On the other hand, for m_t\gsim160\GeV the constraints on the parameter space become increasingly stricter. We demonstrate this trend with a study of the m_t=170\GeV case, where only a small region of parameter space, with \tan\beta\gsim4, remains allowed and corresponds to light chargino masses (m_{\chi^\pm_1}\lsim70\GeV).     Understanding Hope: A Review of Measurement and Construct Validity Research

    Hope has been discussed by philosophers, theologians, educators, and scientists, to name but a few groups of people, over the preceding two millennia. During the last 15 years, C. R. Snyder and his colleagues at the University of Kansas have developed a theory and associated measures of the hope construct that have received extensive, detailed attention both within and outside the field of psychology. In this chapter, we describe Snyder\u27s hope model and some of the research findings that have supported the validity of this construct. Beginning with a conceptual definition of hope, we move to relevant findings about the usefulness of hope in the lives of individuals in various life arenas. We describe measures developed for assessing hope in children and adults, as well as current issues associated with the validity of hope measurement. Finally, we discuss future directions for further investigation of hope

    A Bayesian approach to filter design: detection of compact sources

    We consider filters for the detection and extraction of compact sources on a background. We make a one-dimensional treatment (though a generalization to two or more dimensions is possible) assuming that the sources have a Gaussian profile whereas the background is modeled by an homogeneous and isotropic Gaussian random field, characterized by a scale-free power spectrum. Local peak detection is used after filtering. Then, a Bayesian Generalized Neyman-Pearson test is used to define the region of acceptance that includes not only the amplification but also the curvature of the sources and the a priori probability distribution function of the sources. We search for an optimal filter between a family of Matched-type filters (MTF) modifying the filtering scale such that it gives the maximum number of real detections once fixed the number density of spurious sources.     SUSY signals at HERA in the no-scale flipped SU(5) supergravity model

    Sparticle production and detection at HERA are studied within the recently proposed no-scale flipped SU(5)SU(5) supergravity model. Among the various reaction channels that could lead to sparticle production at HERA, only the following are within its limit of sensitivity in this model: epe~L,Rχi0+X,ν~eχ1+Xe^-p\to \tilde e^-_{L,R}\chi^0_i+X, \tilde \nu_e\chi^-_1+X, where χi0(i=1,2)\chi^0_i(i=1,2) are the two lightest neutralinos and χ1\chi^-_1 is the lightest chargino. We study the elastic and deep-inelastic contributions to the cross sections using the Weizs\"acker-Williams approximation. We find that the most promising supersymmetric production channel is right-handed selectron (e~R\tilde e_{R}) plus first neutralino (χ10\chi^0_1), with one hard electron and missing energy signature. The ν~eχ1\tilde\nu_e\chi^-_1 channel leads to comparable rates but also allows jet final states. A right-handedly polarized electron beam at HERA would shut off the latter channel and allow preferentially the former one. With an integrated luminosity of {\cal L}=100\ipb, HERA can extend the present LEPI lower bounds on me~R,mν~e,mχ10m_{\tilde e_R}, m_{\tilde\nu_e},m_{\chi^0_1} by \approx25\GeV, while {\cal L}=1000\ipb will make HERA competitive with LEPII. We also show that the Leading Proton Spectrometer (LPS) at HERA is an excellent supersymmetry detector which can provide indirect information about the sparticle masses by measuring the leading proton longitudinal momentum distribution.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures (available upon request as uuencoded file or separate ps files), tex (harvmac) CTP-TAMU-15/93, CERN/LAA/93-1

    Biases on cosmological parameters by general relativity effects

    General relativistic corrections to the galaxy power spectrum appearing at the horizon scale, if neglected, may induce biases on the measured values of the cosmological parameters. In this paper, we study the impact of general relativistic effects on non standard cosmologies such as scenarios with a time dependent dark energy equation of state, with a coupling between the dark energy and the dark matter fluids or with non-Gaussianities. We then explore whether general relativistic corrections affect future constraints on cosmological parameters in the case of a constant dark energy equation of state and of non-Gaussianities. We find that relativistic corrections on the power spectrum are not expected to affect the foreseen errors on the cosmological parameters nor to induce large biases on them.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, one added figure, results of Tab.
