Does Chicano Rap Empower the Twenty-First Century Immigrants Rights Movement in the United States
The relationship between Chicano rap and the Twenty-First Century Immigrants\u27 Rights Movement proves that music can be a powerful instrument to communicating the voice of a social movement. Through the rap lyrics of Chicano artists, including Kid Frost, Cypress Hill, Control Machete, Lil\u27Rob, Proper Dos, Akwid, and Kinto Sol, I analyze the frustrations and demands of undocumented Mexican immigrants and Chicanos living in the United States. Therefore, I examine how Chicano rap encourages people to change anti-immigrant United States legislature and social rejection against undocumented Mexicans and Chicanos through political activism. Preserving identity, maintaining unity, fighting to change anti-immigrant legislature, and exposing abuses committed by government officials, Chicano rappers through their powerful music urge people to demand humanitarian immigration reform from the U.S. government in order to ensure human rights, equality, and justice for all. Because the unique Chicano rap lyrics in English, Spanish, and Spanglish, uphold the need for social change, I argue that Chicano rap is filled with prevailing significance that empowers the Twenty-First Century Immigrants\u27 Rights Movement
Seeking \u27Alternatives to Detention\u27 : Unaccompanied Immigrant Children in the U.S. Immigration System
In the 21st century, the issue of unaccompanied immigrant children remains the source of controversy in the United States. Polarized between the concerns of child welfare advocacy groups and those of immigration security supporters, the question of what to do with these children finds no easy answer in the discussion of enacting comprehensive immigration reform. But while the debate continues to gain momentum, unaccompanied immigrant children are thrown into a broken system that fails to protect their wellbeing.
Through the findings of a series of scholars, organizations, and community activists, this paper investigates the plight of unaccompanied immigrant children and recommends that the use of immigration detention centers must be eliminated. My research reveals how contradictory congressional mandates prevent federal immigration agencies from acting in accordance to the best interest principle. I also expose how the move to privatize the detention center system and the inherent federal concern to address national security makes it impossible to prioritize the interests of children.
In demonstrating that the detainment of unaccompanied immigrant children is inefficient, inhumane, and unnecessary, I argue that the United States government must seek to enact and enforce ‘alternatives to detention’ programs. Through these initiatives, the immigration system can guarantee that the best interests of unaccompanied immigrant children will be of main concern. Since the U.S. fails to move in this direction, it violates the very principles it sets out to maintain

Listening to Undocumented Mothers: The Experiences of Undocumented Mexican Mothers of High School Students Living in the U.S. and Receiving Social Services
The present dissertation is based on a phenomenological study on undocumented Mexican immigrant mothers of high school students who have lived in the U.S. for at least five years and received social services. Most of these mothers have emigrated from rural areas of the central and southern Mexican States of Guanajuato, Michoacan, Queretaro, among others. According to the participants, socio-economic conditions forced them to leave their homelands hoping to find a better life in the U.S.
Ten undocumented mothers of high school students living in the U.S. were interviewed from a phenomenological perspective. They were monolingual Spanish speakers (only one mother spoke a native Mexican dialect as a first language and Spanish as a second language), parents of several children, and unskilled laborers with little formal education. This research explored the experiences of these mothers, their beliefs and values, and their relationship with their children’s school and the community in general. The study confirmed some of the outcomes presented in the literature review and revealed other findings that are critical to the development of school and social service programs
Safety margin in serviceability limit state according to the 2019 draft of Eurocode 7: Applicability to embankments on fine-grained soils.
Determination of characteristic values of soil properties is an essential step in the verification of serviceability limit states such as total settlements of embankments founded on fine-grained soils. These values provide a safety margin that accounts for sources of uncertainty such as inherent spatial variability of the properties within the soil mass and sampling uncertainty related to the extent of the investigations. However, modification of soil parameters results in deviations from the actual stress-strain behavior of soils that might be significant for certain soil conditions and characteristics. For instance, the nonlinear strains exhibited by soft Finnish clays in oedometer tests that are accounted for by the tangent modulus method.
The aim of this thesis was to quantify the safety margin obtained from characteristic values in settlement calculations. Four cases from Finland with different soil conditions were analyzed. Several total settlements analyses were carried out to compare values of settlements calculated from characteristic values with values from the mean of data sets of derived soil properties (i.e., best estimates). The analyses were made as functions of the range of coefficient of variation reported in the literature for the relevant soil parameters used in the calculations. Two different deformation models were used to calculate the settlements: tangent modulus method and compression index method. The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) is planning to publish a revised version of Eurocode 7 where a statistically based equation for the determination of characteristic values will be included. This equation was used for the determination of characteristic values in this study. Likewise, an alternative equation was also used for one case in which, a purely statistical approach cannot be applied.
The results show that large conservatism is induced by the strong nonlinearities of the stress-strain behavior of some soft Finnish clays when characteristic values of soil properties are used in settlement predictions. The results are especially critical for the upper bound of the range of the coefficient of variation selected. The characteristic values fail to provide a harmonized safety margin among the cases because of the different stressstrain behavior features. Therefore, characteristic values of soil parameters used in the tangent modulus method have to be estimated cautiously to avoid unnecessary safety margin. Likewise, the equation from the revised version of Eurocode 7 should be avoided in cases where limited samples are available because settlements are considerably overestimated

Applying Liberation Psychology Tenets to the Career Trajectory of the First Chicano Psychologist
The authors of this paper use a liberation psychology framework to explore the career trajectory of Alfredo Castañeda (1923-1981), the first Latinx individual to earn a Ph.D. in psychology and the first Mexican American to hold a full professorship in the United States. Castañeda experienced a prolific career in teaching and research that began by investigating universal elements in children’s learning and anxiety and ultimately transformed into an emphasis on multiculturalism, cultural strengths, advocacy, and social justice. A combination of data was used to inform the current project, including interviews from Castañeda’s former graduate students, published obituaries and memorial tributes, and Castañeda’s published and unpublished works. Liberation psychology tenets are applied to his career trajectory to highlight the underlying parallel process of psychological liberation, particularly in the realm of accessing cultural strengths inherent within traditional Latinx values
