Engaging Elementary Preservice Teachers in Reflection For, In, and On Practice During an Approximation of Practice in TeachLivETM Using Sentence Frames for English Language Learners

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to explore how a teacher educator (myself) and preservice teachers engaged in joint reflection-for-action, reflection-in-action, and reflection-on-action during an approximation of practice in a TeachLivETM setting using sentence frames to support English Language Learners\u27 (ELLs\u27) writing. Four elementary education preservice teachers participated in this study based on set inclusion criteria. This action research study included video-recorded approximations of practice, the sentence frames preservice teachers submitted in the skill seven module, reflective journaling, and analytic memoing. Instructional sequence analysis through transcription, holistic coding, message units, action units, interaction units, instructional sequences, and phase units were used to analyze the data and create instructional maps of the interactions. Findings showed improvements to my practice of using joint reflection with preservice teachers at each cycle. These improvements included decreasing the interruptions to the preservice teachers, supporting the preservice teachers in identifying the problem and multiple solutions, incorporating further reflection within reflection-on-action, holding the reflective conversation, and supporting judgment by identifying the pros and cons of each solution. Additionally, through the creation of instructional maps, I identified the reflective phase units, instructional sequences, and interactions made to engage in joint reflection with the preservice teachers. Looking more closely, using questioning as a reflective move facilitated reflection while informing provided the preservice teacher with content knowledge on using sentence frames with ELLs. These findings contribute to the field by demonstrating one way teacher educators can (a) incorporate reflection within their courses to develop preservice teachers\u27 pedagogical skills and (b) the reflective moves that support joint reflection on pedagogical decisions between teacher educators and preservice teachers

Bone healing in an aged murine fracture model is characterized by sustained callus inflammation and decreased cell proliferation

Geriatric fractures take longer to heal and heal with more complications than those of younger patients; however, the mechanistic basis for this difference in healing is not well understood. To improve this understanding, we investigated cell and molecular differences in fracture healing between 5‐month‐old (young adult) and 25‐month‐old (geriatric) mice healing utilizing high‐throughput analysis of gene expression. Mice underwent bilateral tibial fractures and fracture calluses were harvested at 5, 10, and 20 days post‐fracture (DPF) for analysis. Global gene expression analysis was performed using Affymetrix MoGene 1.0 ST microarrays. After normalization, data were compared using ANOVA and evaluated using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), CTen, heatmap, and Incromaps analysis. PCA and cross‐sectional heatmap analysis demonstrated that DPF followed by age had pronounced effects on changes in gene expression. Both un‐fractured and 20 DPF aged mice showed increased expression of immune‐associated genes (CXCL8, CCL8, and CCL5) and at 10 DPF, aged mice showed increased expression of matrix‐associated genes, (Matn1, Ucma, Scube1, Col9a1, and Col9a3). Cten analysis suggested an enrichment of CD8+ cells and macrophages in old mice relative to young adult mice and, conversely, a greater prevalence of mast cells in young adult mice relative to old. Finally, consistent with the PCA data, the classic bone healing pathways of BMP, Indian Hedgehog, Notch and Wnt clustered according to the time post‐fracture first and age second. Clinical Significance: Greater understanding of age‐dependent molecular changes with healing will help form a mechanistic basis for therapies to improve patient outcomes. © 2017 Orthopaedic Research Society. Por lo tanto , el análisis busca identificar las intenciones en el momento de la construcción de los mensajes publicitarios .Palabras clave: Imágenes , Publicidad ganadores ; metafunción interpersonal Interaction in award-winning ads - the relationship that is established on image Abstract: This article has the general purpose to investigate the structures of publicity images, in prize-winning advertising of the Clube de Criação de São Paulo (Criative Club of São Paulo). State Immigrant Rights Highlights 2021: Advancing Community Health and Well-Being

This report highlights the immigrant inclusive laws enacted in 2021, as well as some pending bills and campaigns. During this time, states adopted policies improving access to health care, higher education, and professional licenses for immigrants; protecting the rights of workers and tenants; investing in access to counsel; strengthening driver and consumer privacy; and limiting local entanglement in federal immigration enforcement efforts. As Congress considers options for providing a pathway to permanent status or temporary relief to millions of immigrants in the U.S., states and localities have taken significant action to improve the lives of their community members, regardless of their immigration status. In response to effective local organizing, almost half the states adopted immigrant-inclusive laws and policies in 2021

Type III collagen modulates fracture callus bone formation and early remodeling

Type III collagen (Col3) has been proposed to play a key role in tissue repair based upon its temporospatial expression during the healing process of many tissues, including bone. Given our previous finding that Col3 regulates the quality of cutaneous repair, as well as our recent data supporting its role in regulating osteoblast differentiation and trabecular bone quantity, we hypothesized that mice with diminished Col3 expression would exhibit altered long‐bone fracture healing. To determine the role of Col3 in bone repair, young adult wild‐type (Col3+/+) and haploinsufficent (Col3+/−) mice underwent bilateral tibial fractures. Healing was assessed 7, 14, 21, and 28 days following fracture utilizing microcomputed tomography (microCT), immunohistochemistry, and histomorphometry. MicroCT analysis revealed a small but significant increase in bone volume fraction in Col3+/− mice at day 21. However, histological analysis revealed that Col3+/− mice have less bone within the callus at days 21 and 28, which is consistent with the established role for Col3 in osteogenesis. Finally, a reduction in fracture callus osteoclastic activity in Col3+/− mice suggests Col3 also modulates callus remodeling. Although Col3 haploinsufficiency affected biological aspects of bone repair, it did not affect the regain of mechanical function in the young mice that were evaluated in this study. These findings provide evidence for a modulatory role for Col3 in fracture repair and support further investigations into its role in impaired bone healing. © 2015 Orthopaedic Research Society.
