Tunable BODIPY derivatives amenable to "click" and peptide chemistry
Novel azido- and amino- functionalised fluorescent probes based on the BODIPY framework have been developed. The probes can be easily and cheaply synthesised, exhibit the highly desirable BODIPY fluorescent properties, and are amenable to “click” and peptide chemistry methodologies. These probes provide a stable and readily available tool amenable for the visualisation of both solution and solid supported events

Effect of soil properties on pyroxasulfone bioactivity and field application rates
Non-Peer ReviewedThe relationship between pyroxasulfone bioactivity and soil properties has not been investigated in a wide range of soils typical of western Canada. In this study, 47 soils from Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta, with varying organic matter content (1.5 to 22.1%), pH (5.0 to 7.9), and clay content (6.8 to 59.4%) were used to evaluate the effect of soil properties on pyroxasulfone bioactivity and its relevance to field application rates. Bioactivity was assessed by measuring the reduction of sugar beet shoot length after 7 days in response to 0, 92, 184, and 368 μg ai kg-1 pyroxasulfone concentration in soil. Multiple regression analysis showed that pyroxasulfone bioactivity was related to soil organic matter content, pH and clay content. Grouping the soils according to these properties allowed for a summarization of pyroxasulfone field application rates required to achieve bioactivity based on the magnitude of sugar beet shoot length inhibition (%). The estimated field application rates ranged from less than 120 to 480 g ai ha-1
A Two-Step Quantum Direct Communication Protocol Using Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Pair Block
A protocol for quantum secure direct communication using blocks of EPR pairs
is proposed. A set of ordered EPR pairs is used as a data block for sending
secret message directly. The ordered EPR set is divided into two particle
sequences, a checking sequence and a message-coding sequence. After
transmitting the checking sequence, the two parties of communication check
eavesdropping by measuring a fraction of particles randomly chosen, with random
choice of two sets of measuring bases. After insuring the security of the
quantum channel, the sender, Alice encodes the secret message directly on the
message-coding sequence and send them to Bob. By combining the checking and
message-coding sequences together, Bob is able to read out the encoded messages
directly. The scheme is secure because an eavesdropper cannot get both

Frequency-dependent (ac) Conduction in Disordered Composites: a Percolative Study
In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. B{\bf57}, 3375 (1998)], we examined in detail
the nonlinear (electrical) dc response of a random resistor cum tunneling bond
network (, introduced by us elsewhere to explain nonlinear response of
metal-insulator type mixtures). In this work which is a sequel to that paper,
we consider the ac response of the -based correlated () model.
Numerical solutions of the Kirchoff's laws for the model give a power-law
exponent (= 0.7 near ) of the modulus of the complex ac conductance at
moderately low frequencies, in conformity with experiments on various types of
disordered systems. But, at very low frequencies, it gives a simple quadratic
or linear dependence on the frequency depending upon whether the system is
percolating or not. We do also discuss the effective medium approximation
() of our and the traditional random network model, and discuss

Euler configurations and quasi-polynomial systems
In the Newtonian 3-body problem, for any choice of the three masses, there
are exactly three Euler configurations (also known as the three Euler points).
In Helmholtz' problem of 3 point vortices in the plane, there are at most three
collinear relative equilibria. The "at most three" part is common to both
statements, but the respective arguments for it are usually so different that
one could think of a casual coincidence. By proving a statement on a
quasi-polynomial system, we show that the "at most three" holds in a general
context which includes both cases. We indicate some hard conjectures about the
configurations of relative equilibrium and suggest they could be attacked

Profiles of Patients Who Use Marijuana for Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Background: Marijuana is legal in a number of states for indications that include inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), and patients are interested in its potential benefits. Aims: We aimed to describe the legal use of marijuana in individuals with IBD in the USA who participate within the CCFA Partners internet-based cohort. Methods: A total of 2357 participants who lived in states where prescription or recreational marijuana was legal, were offered the opportunity to complete a survey on marijuana use and IBD symptoms including perceived benefits of therapy. Bivariate statistics and logistic regression models were used to determine factors associated with marijuana use. Results: Surveys were completed by 1666 participants (71%) with only 214 (12.8%) indicating they had asked their medical doctor about its use and 73 actually using prescribed marijuana (4.4%). Within the respondent group (N = 1666), 234 participants lived where both medical and recreational marijuana is legal and 49 (20.9%) reported recreational marijuana use specifically for IBD. Users reported positive benefits (80.7%), but users also reported more depression, anxiety, pain interference, and lower social satisfaction than non-users. Those prescribed marijuana reported more active disease, and more use of steroids, narcotics, and zolpidem. Conclusions: Few IBD patients consulted their medical doctors about marijuana use or used prescription marijuana. Where recreational marijuana was available, usage rates were higher. Users reported benefits but also more IBD symptoms, depression, anxiety, and pain. Marijuana use may be higher in patients with IBD symptoms not well treated by conventional medical approaches
Far-infrared vibrational properties of high-pressure-high-temperature C60 polymers and the C60 dimer
We report high-resolution far-infrared transmission measurements of the 2 + 2 cycloaddition C-60 dimer and two-dimensional rhombohedral and one-dimensional orthorhombic high-pressure high-temperature C60 polymers. In the spectral region investigated(20-650 cm(-1)), we see no low-energy interball modes, but symmetry breaking of the linked C-60 balls is evident in the complex spectrum of intramolecular modes. Experimental features suggest large splittings or frequency shifts of some IhC60-derived modes that are activated by symmetry reduction, implying that the balls are strongly distorted in these structures. We have calculated the vibrations of all three systems by first-principles quantum molecular dynamics and use them to assign the predominant IhC60 symmetries of observed modes. Pur calculations show unprecedentedly large downshifts of T-1u(2)-derived modes and extremely large splittings of other modes, both of which are consistent with the experimental spectra. For the rhombohedral and orthorhombic polymers, the T-1u(2)-derived mode that is polarized along the bonding direction is calculated to downshift below any T-1u(1)-derived modes. We also identify a previously unassigned feature near 610 cm(-1) in all three systems as a widely split or shifted mode derived from various silent IhC60 vibrations, confirming a strong perturbation model for these linked fullerene structures
Racial and ethnic differences in the degree of participation and retention in a decentralized cohort study of COVID-19 immunization in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases
Introduction: Disparities in the recruitment of minority populations in research are well-documented. However, the degree of participation and retention of minorities following enrollment is less known, particularly in decentralized studies. Although decentralized clinical research methods may allow researchers to engage broader study populations with less participation burden, they may present different retention challenges. To evaluate racial and ethnic differences in the degree of participation after enrollment in a decentralized study, we analyzed data from a cohort of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases following COVID-19 immunization. Methods: We compared by race and ethnicity the following post-enrollment participation metrics: response to > 50% of follow-up surveys, donation of a blood sample for antibody testing, consent to use of bio samples for future research, and withdrawal prior to study completion. Results: Overall, we observed higher levels of post-enrollment study participation among non-Hispanic White (NHW) participants as compared to Black or Hispanic participants: 95% of NHW participants completed follow-up versus 87% of Black participants and 91% of Hispanic participants, 73% of NHW participants provided bio samples versus 64% Black participants and 67% Hispanic participants, and 65% of NHW participants provided consent for future research versus 62% of Black participants and 52% of Hispanic participants. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate that the degree of study participation after enrollment in this decentralized study differed by race and ethnicity, indicating that attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion is needed not only in clinical research recruitment but also throughout study administration
Coronal Shock Waves, EUV Waves, and Their Relation to CMEs. III. Shock-Associated CME/EUV Wave in an Event with a Two-Component EUV Transient
On 17 January 2010, STEREO-B observed in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and white
light a large-scale dome-shaped expanding coronal transient with perfectly
connected off-limb and on-disk signatures. Veronig et al. (2010, ApJL 716, 57)
concluded that the dome was formed by a weak shock wave. We have revealed two
EUV components, one of which corresponded to this transient. All of its
properties found from EUV, white light, and a metric type II burst match
expectations for a freely expanding coronal shock wave including correspondence
to the fast-mode speed distribution, while the transient sweeping over the
solar surface had a speed typical of EUV waves. The shock wave was presumably
excited by an abrupt filament eruption. Both a weak shock approximation and a
power-law fit match kinematics of the transient near the Sun. Moreover, the
power-law fit matches expansion of the CME leading edge up to 24 solar radii.
The second, quasi-stationary EUV component near the dimming was presumably
associated with a stretched CME structure; no indications of opening magnetic
