    The effects of one night of partial sleep deprivation on executive functions in individuals reporting chronic insomnia and good sleepers

    Background and objectives The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of a partial sleep deprivation night on executive functions in participants reporting chronic insomnia and good sleepers using a Task Switching paradigm. Methods Sixteen participants reporting symptoms of chronic insomnia and sixteen good sleepers were tested after a night of habitual sleep and after a night of partial sleep deprivation (5\u202fh of sleep allowed). The Switch Cost (SC) and the Backward Inhibition (BI) were computed as measures of switching attention and response inhibition, respectively. Results We observed a marginally significant interaction Night\u202f 7\u202fGroup on SC (F(1,29)\u202f=\u202f4.06, p\u202f=\u202f0.053, \u3b72\u202f=\u202f0.123. Fisher's least significant difference (LSD) post-hoc revealed a smaller SC after the sleep deprived night relative to the habitual night for the good sleepers (p\u202f=\u202f0.027;M\u202f=\u202f192.23\u202f\ub1\u202f201.81 vs M\u202f=\u202f98.99\u202f\ub1\u202f141.16). Differently, participants with insomnia did not show any change after the two nights. Limitations Several limitations must be acknowledged including the use of a convenient sample of university students and the use of a single task of cognitive performance. Conclusions We found that SC was smaller in the good sleepers after a night of partial sleep deprivation compared to a habitual night, indicating a better switching performance. The insomnia group showed no differences in performance after the two experimental nights. Several factors may account for these results, including increased levels of arousal and cognitive effort during task execution

    RDCL 3D, a Model Agnostic Web Framework for the Design and Composition of NFV Services

    We present RDCL 3D, a "model agnostic" web framework for the design and composition of NFV services and components. The framework allows editing and validating the descriptors of services and components both textually and graphically and supports the interaction with external orchestrators or with deployment and execution environments. RDCL 3D is open source and designed with a modular approach, allowing developers to "plug in" the support for new models. We describe several advances with respect to the NFV state of the art, which have been implemented with RDCL 3D. We have integrated in the platform the latest ETSI NFV ISG model specifications for which no parsers/validators were available. We have also included in the platform the support for OASIS TOSCA models, reusing existing parsers. Then we have considered the modelling of components in a modular software router (Click), which goes beyond the traditional scope of NFV. We have further developed this approach by combining traditional NFV components (Virtual Network Functions) and Click elements in a single model. Finally, we have considered the support of this solution using the Unikernels virtualization technology.Comment: Accepted pape

    An optical sensing system for atmospheric particulate matter

    Atmospheric particulate is one of the main responsible for the environmental pollution of highly populated cities. The particulate matter can be considered an aerosol of many particles, with different shapes, morphologies and sizes down to few micrometers. These small particles are responsible for climate changes and, when inhaled, can reach the lungs causing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Usually commercial sensors are based on passive filters and are designed to measure only particles whose size is below a certain value. Therefore, a measuring system capable of assessing the quality of air and evaluating not only the amount of particles, but also the size distribution of the particulate matter in urban atmospheres could be extremely helpful. This paper describes a simple and cheap optical solution, which is able to detect the total amount of solid pollution particles and classify them according to their average size, giving a fast response to the users

    Ethanol breath measuring system

    Driving after drinking is considered extremely dangerous and severe limits to alcohol drink before driving are enforced in several countries. This paper describes a simple and cheap device which is capable of estimating the blood ethanol level from the expired breath. The device employs a 3 mm×6 mm gas sensor based on Nb 2 O 5 thin-film which features good sensing performance towards ethanol. A suitable electronic circuit is employed in order to measure the conductivity of the gas sensor and to control its working temperature. The circuit is based on a small microcontroller board (Teensy 3.2) and some additional analog circuitry. Similar devices are already available off-theshelf, however, most of them do not guarantee an accuracy suitable for a quantitative measurement of breath ethanol. The proposed system, instead, has been developed trying to optimize accuracy, power consumption and size. Furthermore, such a system employs a novel gas sensor based on a Nb 2 O 5 sensing film, which has not yet been employed in such a field. The system allows one to set the working temperature of the sensor at its optimal value (350 °C) and to simultaneously measure the sensor resistance in the range between 10 MΩ and approximately 1 GΩ. The quite low power consumption together with the very small size of the system make it very suitable for portable applications such as alcohol drive tests which can warn drivers before starting driving

    Role of α-Tocopherol Acetate on Nasal Respiratory Functions: Mucociliary Clearance and Rhinomanometric Evaluations in Primary Atrophic Rhinitis.

    Primary atrophic rhinitis is a disease of the nose and of paranasalsinuses characterized by a progressive loss of function of nasal and paranasal mucosa caused by a gradual destruction of ciliary mucosalepithelium with atrophy of serous–mucous glands and loss of bonestructures.The aim of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic effects of topic α-tochopherol acetate (vitamin E) in patients with primary atrophicrhinitis based on subjective and objective data.We analyzed 44 patients with dry nose sensation and endoscopic evidence of atrophic nasal mucosa. We analyzed endoscopic mucosascore, anterior rhinomanometry, and nasal mucociliary clearance before and after 6 months of topic treatment with α-tochopherol acetate. For statistical analysis, we used paired samples t test (95% confidence interval [CI], P < .05) for rhinomanometric and muciliary transit time evaluations and analysis of variance 1-way test (95% CI, P < .05) for endoscopic evaluation. All patients showed an improvement in "dry nose" sensation and inperception of nasal airflow. Rhinomanometric examination showed increase of nasal airflow at follow-up ( P < .05); nasal mucociliaryclearance showed a reduction in mean transit time ( P < .05); and endoscopic evaluation showed significative improvement of hydration of nasalmucosa and significative decreasing nasal crusts and mucusaccumulation ( P < .05). Medical treatment for primary atrophic rhinitis is not clearly documented in the literature; in this research, it was demonstrated that α-ochopherol acetate could be a possible treatment for atrophic rhinitis

    Adsorption of triblock copolymers and their homopolymers at laponite clay/solution interface. Role played by the copolymer nature

    The adsorption thermodynamics of copolymers, based on ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide ( PO) units, at the laponite (RD) clay/liquid interface was determined at 298 K. The copolymer nature was tuned at molecular level by changing the hydrophilicity, the architecture and the molecular weight (Mw) keeping constant the EO/PO ratio. Polyethylene (PEGs) and polypropylene (PPGs) glycols with varying Mw and their mixture were also investigated to discriminate the role of the EO and the PO segments in the adsorption process. Enthalpies of transfer of RD, at fixed concentration, from water to the aqueous macromolecule solutions as functions of the macromolecule molality were determined. They were treated quantitatively by means of a model based on two equilibria: ( 1) one-to-one binding between the macromolecule and the site on the solid and ( 2) two-to-one binding following which one macromolecule interacts with another one adsorbed onto the solid. The good agreement between the equilibrium constants obtained from calorimetry and those determined from kinetic experiments conformed the reliability of the experimental and theoretical approaches. Almost all of the systems investigated are highlighted by the one-to-one binding; the L35 and 10R5 systems present both equilibria. The insights provided by the thermodynamics of adsorption of their homopolymers onto RD were fruitful in obtaining detailed information on the nature of the forces involved between RD and the copolymers. The data obtained in the present work clearly evidenced that for comparable polymer Mw, PPG is more suitable in building up a steric barrier around the RD particles and, indeed, exhibits several advantages and no drawbacks. Moreover, the parent copolymers may properly functionalize the RD surface by exploiting both their high affinity to the solid surface and the ability to self-assemble onto it as L35 and 10R5 clearly showed

    Employment of Nb2O5 thin-films for ethanol sensing

    Gas sensors attract the attention of research since years because of their good performance and the extremely wide field of application. Environmental monitoring, chemical and industrial processes, automotive, medical diagnosis and healthcare are few of such applications. Chemical gas sensors are able to detect specific gases in a wide range of concentration going from few ppb to hundreds ppm. This paper deals with such a topic and presents a novel gas sensor for ethanol based on a Nb 2 O 5 thin sensing film. The sensor was realized by depositing the niobium oxide layer on a tiny alumina substrate by means of a lab-scale plasma sputtering reactor. Subsequently, the sensor was characterized and it revealed good sensing performance towards ethanol. Ethanol monitoring finds application in several fields including breath analyzers for assessing drunk-driving situations, industrial monitoring, medical diagnosis and environmental safety. The proposed sensor, thanks to its good sensitivity, selectivity, wide concentration range, low-cost and low power consumption, can be a suitable solution in such applications

    Real-Life effects of benralizumab on exacerbation number and lung hyperinflation in atopic patients with severe eosinophilic asthma.

    Background: The humanized monoclonal antibody benralizumab targets the α subunit of the interleukin-5 (IL-5) receptor and the FcγRIIIa receptor expressed by natural killer cells. Through this dual mechanism of action, benralizumab neutralizes the pro-eosinophil functions of IL-5 and promotes eosinophil apoptosis. Objectives and methods: The present real-life study aimed to evaluate, in 22 allergic patients with severe eosinophilic asthma, the effects of benralizumab on asthma exacerbations and lung hyperinflation. Results: In this regard here we show that, after 24 weeks of add-on treatment, benralizumab completely depleted peripheral blood eosinophils (from 810 to 0 cells/μL; p < 0.0001), and significantly decreased both asthma exacerbation number (from 4 to 0; p < 0.0001) and residual volume (from 2720 to 2300 mL; p < 0.01). Moreover, at the same time point (24 weeks) benralizumab also increased pre-bronchodilator FEV1 (from 1295 to 1985 mL; p < 0.0001), FVC (from 2390 to 2974 mL; p < 0.0001), FEF25−75 (from 0.6 to 1.42 L/sec; p < 0.0001), IC (from 1940 to 2460 mL; not significant), and ACT score (from 14.73 to 22.95; p < 0.0001), as well as reduced prednisone intake (from 25 to 0 mg; p < 0.0001). Conclusion: In conclusion, our results suggest that via its anti-eosinophil actions benralizumab improved airflow limitation, lung hyperinflation, and respiratory symptoms, as well as lowered asthma exacerbation rate and abrogated OCS consumption in most patients

    Speech outcome in tongue cancer surgery: objective evaluation by acoustic analysis software

    BACKGROUND. Cancer of the oral cavity is one of the most common malignancies of which 60% affect the tongue. Carcinoma of the tongue causes significant alterations of the articulatory and swallowing functions. The gold standard of care remains primary surgical resection with or without postoperative adjuvant therapy. Whereas T1 and T2 tongue tumors can be treated with more conservative surgeries, as partial glossectomies, the larger tumors require total and aggressive glossectomies which increase survival, but, on the other hand, they might often make speech, chewing and swallowing impossible. MATERIAL AND METHODS. Our study was performed on a total of 21 patients with Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the tongue who underwent either partial resection or hemiglossectomy. Each subject (either surgical patients or controls) was asked to pronounce the vowels /a/, /e/, /i/, /u/, and all signals were evaluated separately by two operators. Acoustic (F0, jitter, shimmer, NHR) and vowel metric (the ratio F2i/F2u, tVSA, qVSA, FCR) features have been extracted. In order to define the speech intelligibility, all patients were evaluated by two doctors and one speech therapist and all patients received the Speech Handicap Index (SHI) translated into Italian language before recording. RESULTS. No statistically significant variations were observed, regardless of the gender, between controls and surgically resected patients when tumor staging was T1-T2. On the contrary, when patients had to undergo more extensive surgical resection due to the presence of a T3-T4 tumor, a dramatic increase of F2u could be observed. This change, together with a decrease of F2i, led to a highly significant reduction in the F2i/F2u parameter in surgically resected patients as compared to controls. The other parameters which were reduced in a statistically significant manner in T3-T4 surgically resected patients were tVSA and qVSA. Instead, two parameters increased in a statistically significant manner in T3-T4 surgically resected patients: FCR and SHI. Again, none of the above-mentioned parameters was altered in a statistically significant manner in early tumor stage resected patients, regar dless of the gender. CONCLUSION. For the first time, we used a series of newly developed formant parameters, introduced by various authors for the study of the articulatory undershoot of the tongue in various neurodegenerative diseases. The statistical analysis of our results highlighted in an incontrovertible way a strong correlation and significance of each of our parameters F2 / i / / F2 / u /, FCR, tVSA, qVSA, with the entity of the TNM, and therefore of the surgical extension of the resection, and in parallel with the loss of the intelligibility of the speech that proportionally reaches higher values in the advanced stages of the disease as can be deduced from the SHI trend
