Changing the University System Management: a study of the Italian scenario
Over recent years, the Italian University System has been handling a phase of deep
changes, which have had significant impact on its mission and on the way it operates.
The most important of these changes have been to the organisation of universities, their
recruitment procedures and in terms of improvements to the quality and efficiency of
the university system itself. In this perspective, the objective of this research was to carry
out a critical analysis of the process of change, with special reference to improving
efficiency by making the transition from cash-based accounting to accrual accounting. In
order to achieve this objective, the starting point was the legislation of reference that
sets out the terms for the move to financial accrual accounting. A comparative analysis
was then carried out at an international level, with the purpose of highlighting the
strengths and weaknesses identified during the implementation of these new
procedures within the public field. This was followed by an analysis of the details of the
theory defining the accounting principles to be used in the process of preparing
university’s financial statements. Finally, the study identified the main critical points
relating to implementation of the new accounting system, offering, at the same time,
several thoughts concerning possible subsequent analyses on this topic
Spitzer Observations of Galaxy Clusters
We present preliminary results of a project to study three rich nearby clusters of galaxies with the Spitzer space telescope. The Spitzer observations in the four IRAC and three MIPS bands cover a region up to three virial radii, approximately, and have been recently completed. On the basis of the first Spitzer images, we followed up spectroscopically the far-infrared sources with the multi-fiber spectrograph HYDRA on the WIYN telescope. 70% of the sources brighter than 0.3 mJy at 24 μm and r’ < 20.5 have been observed for a total of 1078 spectra. For 87% of them we were able to measure redshifts obtaining 50 to 100 members for the different clusters. This first study shows that the far-IR sources in these clusters are predominantly powered by star formation and clustered in regions far from the center. In the case of A1763, they seem to be situated along a filament supporting the idea of infalling galaxies experiencing bursts of star formation during their first contact with the hot intra-cluster medium
Scattering induced dynamical entanglement and the quantum-classical correspondence
The generation of entanglement produced by a local potential interaction in a
bipartite system is investigated. The degree of entanglement is contrasted with
the underlying classical dynamics for a Rydberg molecule (a charged particle
colliding on a kicked top). Entanglement is seen to depend on the structure of
classical phase-space rather than on the global dynamical regime. As a
consequence regular classical dynamics can in certain circumstances be
associated with higher entanglement generation than chaotic dynamics. In
addition quantum effects also come into play: for example partial revivals,
which are expected to persist in the semiclassical limit, affect the long time
behaviour of the reduced linear entropy. These results suggest that
entanglement may not be a pertinent universal signature of chaos.Comment: Published versio
Mid-infrared selection of quasar-2s in Spitzer's First Look Survey
We present early results from the spectroscopic follow-up of a sample of
candidate obscured AGN selected in the mid-infrared from the Spitzer First Look
Survey. Our selection allows a direct comparison of the numbers of obscured and
unobscured AGN at a given luminosity for the first time, and shows that the
ratio of obscured to unobscured AGN at infrared luminosities corresponding to
low luminosity quasars is ~1:1 at z~0.5. Most of our optically-faint candidate
obscured AGN have the high-ionization, narrow-line spectra expected from type-2
AGN. A composite spectrum shows evidence for Balmer absorption lines,
indicating recent star-formation activity in the host galaxies. There is
tentative evidence for a decrease in the obscured AGN fraction with increasing

Different carbohydrate sources affect swine performance and post-prandial glycaemic response
The type of starch and fibre in the diet affects several parameters, including glycaemic and insulin response, that are involved in pig growth performance. Four experimental diets for growing pigs differing for carbohydrates source (corn, barley, faba bean and pea) were tested. The diets were analysed in vitro to assess the carbohydrates characteristics, and they were administered to 56 crossbreed growing pigs (Landrace × Large White) randomly divided into four groups (mean age of 95 ± 6 days; body weight 80 kg ± 4 days). Clinical examination and average daily gain were performed before recruitment and after 40 days of experiment. The metabolic effects were investigated by blood count and serum biochemical parameters and by the glycaemic and insulin post-prandial response. The study revealed substantial differences among the diets, suggesting that alternative feedstuffs for swine affect several parameters, including glycaemic and insulin response, with no negative effects on growing performance. The Barley group showed the highest daily weight gain (p <.05) associated with the highest glycaemic (p <.05) and insulin response at 1 and 2 h post-prandial (p <.01), suggesting that the barley-based diet can support performance comparable to that of the corn-based diet in growing pig. By contrast, the lowest glycaemia was observed in the Faba bean group (p <.05), confirming the capacity of this legume to modulate post-prandial glucose levels. Moreover, the ability of some ingredients in lowering glucose and insulin response enriches the knowledge on functional nutrients for animal diets and to prevent the incidence of enteric diseases.Highlights The type of starch and fibre used in the diet highly affected some blood parameters, such as glycaemic and insulin responses. HST/ACS weak lensing analysis of the galaxy cluster RDCS 1252.9-2927 at z=1.24
We present a weak lensing analysis of one of the most distant massive galaxy
cluster known, RDCS 1252.9-2927 at z=1.24, using deep images from the Advanced
Camera for Survey (ACS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). By taking
advantage of the depth and of the angular resolution of the ACS images, we
detect for the first time at z>1 a clear weak lensing signal in both the i
(F775W) and z (F850LP) filters. We measure a 5-\sigma signal in the i band and
a 3-\sigma signal in the shallower z band image. The two radial mass profiles
are found to be in very good agreement with each other, and provide a
measurement of the total mass of the cluster inside a 1Mpc radius of M(<1Mpc) =
(8.0 +/- 1.3) x 10^14 M_\odot in the current cosmological concordance model h
=0.70, \Omega_m=0.3, \Omega_\Lambda=0.7, assuming a redshift distribution of
background galaxies as inferred from the Hubble Deep Fields surveys. A weak
lensing signal is detected out to the boundary of our field (3' radius,
corresponding to 1.5Mpc at the cluster redshift). We detect a small offset
between the centroid of the weak lensing mass map and the brightest cluster
galaxy, and we discuss the possible origin of this discrepancy. The cumulative
weak lensing radial mass profile is found to be in good agreement with the
X-ray mass estimate based on Chandr and XMM-Newton observations, at least out
