Alaska-Washington Trade Profile: Waterborne Commerce
The overall purpose of this study was to establish a profile of
Alaska-Washington waterborne movements, emphasizing commodity
and port components that determine the needs of a physical distribution
system. Specific objectives of the report are :
1. To determine Washington's share of the total Alaska-bound,
waterborne traffic.
2. To present selected Washington-to-Alaska, waterborne movements
by commodity and destination ports.
3. To present selected Alaska-to-Washington, waterborne movements
by commodity and origination ports.
4. To determine implications of the trade profile with regard to
future transportation and marketing needs.
It should be noted that there are sizable noncommodity trade
flows between the regions, i.e., labor, capital, and services that are
not in this data base. This report contains only data on major commodity
grouping and principal ports in Alaska. Additional information is on file at the Agricultural Experiment Station, University of Alaska, and at the Department of Agricultural Economics, Washington State University
Algebraic Monte Carlo precedure reduces statistical analysis time and cost factors
Algebraic Monte Carlo procedure statistically analyzes performance parameters in large, complex systems. The individual effects of input variables can be isolated and individual input statistics can be changed without having to repeat the entire analysis
Claiming expertise from betwixt and between: Digital humanities librarians, emotional labor, and genre theory
Librarians\u27 liminal (intermediate) position within academia situates us to make unique contributions to digital humanities (DH). In this article, we use genre theory, feminist theory, and theories of emotional labor to explore the importance of discourse mediation and affective labor to DH and the interplay between these areas and academic structural inequality. By claiming our expertise and making explicit work that is often not visible, we can advocate for new and varied roles for librarians in digital humanities. Our analysis is informed by both theory and practice, and it takes a dialogic approach that depends upon the interactions between the two
IS IT FEASIBLE TO DEVELOP AN AGRIBUSINESS SELLING PRECISION FARMING SERVICES TO FARMERS?
With the introduction of Variable-Rate Technology, farmers have the capability to decrease input costs, increase output or both. Not all farmers can justify purchasing the equipment, therefore relying on agribusiness firms to provide precision farming services. This study was conducted to determine the feasibility of operating such an agribusiness.Agribusiness,
Opportunities for policy historians: The evolution of the US civilian space program
The evolution of U.S. civilian space policy and the institutional framework through which that policy was implemented are discussed. Space policy principles the governed decision making between 1957 and 1962 are identified. The government/industry relations regarding space related research and development are discussed
Extensional Rheology Experiment Developed to Investigate the Rheology of Dilute Polymer Solutions in Microgravity
A fundamental characteristic of fluid is viscosity; that is, the fluid resists forces that cause it to flow. This characteristic, or parameter, is used by manufacturers and end-users to describe the physical properties of a specific material so that they know what to expect when a material, such as a polymer, is processed through an extruder, a film blower, or a fiber-spinning apparatus. Normally, researchers will report a shear viscosity that depends on the rate of an imposed shearing flow. Although this type of characterization is sufficient for some processes, simple shearing experiments do not provide a complete picture of what a processor may expect for all materials. Extensional stretching flows are common in many polymer-processing operations such as extrusion, blow molding, and fiber spinning. Therefore, knowledge of the complete rheological (ability to flow and be deformed) properties of the polymeric fluid being processed is required to accurately predict and account for the flow behavior. In addition, if numerical simulations are ever able to serve as a priori design tools for optimizing polymer processing operations such as those described above, an accurate knowledge of the extensional viscosity of a polymer system and its variation with temperature, concentration, molecular weight, and strain rate is critical
