    A Combinatorial Formula for Macdonald Polynomials

    We prove a combinatorial formula for the Macdonald polynomial H_mu(x;q,t) which had been conjectured by the first author. Corollaries to our main theorem include the expansion of H_mu(x;q,t) in terms of LLT polynomials, a new proof of the charge formula of Lascoux and Schutzenberger for Hall-Littlewood polynomials, a new proof of Knop and Sahi's combinatorial formula for Jack polynomials as well as a lifting of their formula to integral form Macdonald polynomials, and a new combinatorial rule for the Kostka-Macdonald coefficients K_{lambda,mu}(q,t) in the case that mu is a partition with parts less than or equal to 2.Comment: 29 page

    Gammarid amphipods are a crucial link connecting primary producers with secondary consumers, but little is known about their nutritional ecology. Here we asked how starvation and subsequent feeding on different nutritional quality algae influences fatty acid retention, compound-specific isotopic carbon fractionation, and biosynthesis of ω-3 and ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the relict gammarid amphipod Pallaseopsis quadrispinosa. The fatty acid profiles of P. quadrispinosa closely matched with those of the dietary green algae after only seven days of refeeding, whereas fatty acid patterns of P. quadrispinosa were less consistent with those of the diatom diet. This was mainly due to P. quadrispinosa suffering energy limitation in the diatom treatment which initiated the metabolization of 16:1ω7 and partly 18:1ω9 for energy, but retained high levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) similar to those found in wild-caught organisms. Moreover, α-linolenic acid (ALA) from green algae was mainly stored and not allocated to membranes at high levels nor biosynthesized to EPA. The arachidonic acid (ARA) content in membrane was much lower than EPA and P. quadrispinosa was able to biosynthesize long-chain ω-6 PUFA from linoleic acid (LA). Our experiment revealed that diet quality has a great impact on fatty acid biosynthesis, retention and turnover in this consumer

    Calculations of the electric field dependent far‐infrared absorption spectra in InAs/AlGaSb quantum wells

    Excitonic and band‐to‐band absorption spectra are calculated for vertical incident radiation for the InAs/AlGaSb multiple quantum well structures. Due to the special band lineup of this heterostructure, the absorption spectra can be tailored to respond in far infrared. The electric field dependence of the spectra shows blue shift and enhanced absorption in contrast to the situation in type I quantum wells.     Refractive index and electro‐optic effect in compressive and tensile strained quantum wells

    The effects of biaxial compressive and tensile strain on the excitonic resonances and associated changes in refractive index and electro‐optic effect in quantum wells have been calculated and measured. Theoretical calculations include the important heavy‐hole–light–hole band mixing effects. It is seen that the excitonic contributions dominate near the band edge. With increasing compressive strain the linear electro‐optic effect is slightly increased, while the quadratic effect is greatly enhanced.     Socio-cultural similarity with host population rather than ecological similarity predicts success and failure of human migrations

    Demographers argue that human migration patterns are shaped by people moving to better environments. More recently, however, evolutionary theorists have argued that people move to similar environments to which they are culturally adapted. While previous studies analysing which factors affect migration patterns have focused almost exclusively on successful migrations, here we take advantage of a natural experiment during World War II in which an entire population was forcibly displaced but were then allowed to return home to compare successful with unsuccessful migrations. We test two competing hypotheses: (1) individuals who relocate to environments that are superior to their place of origin will be more likely to remain-The Better Environment Hypothesis or (2) individuals who relocate to environments that are similar to their place of origin will be more likely to remain-The Similar Environment Hypothesis. Using detailed records recording the social, cultural, linguistic and ecological conditions of the origin and destination locations, we find that cultural similarity (e.g. linguistic similarity and marrying within one's own minority ethnic group)-rather than ecological differences-are the best predictors of successful migrations. These results suggest that social relationships, empowered by cultural similarity with the host population, play a critical role in successful migrations and provide limited support for the similar environment hypothesis. Overall, these results demonstrate the importance of comparing unsuccessful with successful migrations in efforts understand the engines of human dispersal and suggest that the primary obstacles to human migrations and successful range expansion are sociocultural rather than ecological.Peer reviewe

    Effect of coherent strain on hydrogenic acceptor levels in InyGa1−yAs/AlxGa1−xAs quantum well structures

    The biaxial strain produced in lattice‐mismatched epitaxy can have a substantial effect on the valence band structure. Theoretical results are presented for a hydrogenic acceptor in a quantum well under tensile and compressive strain. The acceptor level energy is a strong function of strain and could be used as a signature for the effect of strain on the valence band structure. Experimental studies are carried out on compressively strained InyGa1−yAs/ AlxGa1−xAs quantum well structures and the acceptor level energy is determined by photoluminescence measurements.
