    Correlation between hot-carrier-induced interface states and GIDL current increase in N-MOSFET's

    Correlation between created interface states and GIDL current increase in n-MOSFET's during hot-carrier stress is quantitatively discussed. A trap-assisted two-step tunneling model is used to relate the increased interface-state density (ADH) with the shift in GIDL current (ΔI d). Results show that under appropriate drain-gate biases, the two-step tunneling is so dominant that A/d is insensitive to temperatures up to about 50 °C. With the help of 2-D device simulation, the locations of the drain region with significant two-step tunneling and the energy levels of the traps involved can be found, with both depending on the drain voltage. From these insights on ADit,A/d and their relation, A Du near the midgap can be estimated, with an error less than 10% as compared to the results of chargepumping measurement on the same transistors. Devices with nitrided gate oxide, different gate-oxide thicknesses and different channel dimensions are also tested to verify the above correlation. © 1998 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    Poster PresentationThis journal suppl. contain meeting abstracts of the 31st International Symposium on Intensive Care and Emergency MedicineINTRODUCTION: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in septic shock and there is no good marker to predict it. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is a novel renal biomarker showing promising results in prediction of AKI in patients across diff erent clinical settings. Another potential marker is the resistive index (RI) of renal interlobar artery (calculated as (peak systolic velocity – end diastolic velocity) / peak systolic velocity), which has been shown to be useful in identifying those who will develop AKI in patients with septic shock. The aim of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of RI and NGAL in the early detection of AKI. METHODS: A prospective, observational study in a 20-bed medical/surgical ICU of a university teaching hospital. All patients with septic shock were recruited, excluding those with chronic renal failure (serum creatinine >120 μmol/l). Within the fi rst 24 hours after the introduction of vasopressor, urine and serum were collected for NGAL measurement and RI was determined by two independent operators. The occurrence of AKI was measured at day 3, according to RIFLE criteria. RI and NGAL were compared between patients with (RIFLE-F) and without (RIFLE-0/R/I) AKI. RESULTS: During the period from August to November 2010, 20 patients (age 58 ± 16) with septic shock were recruited. Eleven patients were classifi ed as having AKI. No signifi cant diff erence in baseline characteristics such as APACHE II score and baseline creatinine was shown at enrollment. RI, serum-NGAL and urine-NGAL were all higher in patients with AKI (RI: 0.749 ± 0.0697 (mean ± SD) vs. 0.585 ± 0.0983, P <0.001; serum-NGAL: 2,182 ± 838 ng/ml (mean ± SD) vs. 1,075 ± 1,006, P = 0.015; urine-NGAL: 2,009 ± 3,370 vs. 993 ± 1,789 (median ± IQR), P = 0.025). Area under the ROC curve for RI and serum-NGAL was 0.909 (±0.088, P = 0.002) and 0.808 (±0.113, P = 0.02), respectively. For RI, using 0.65 as the cut-off , sensitivity and specifi city was 1 and 0.89, respectively. For serum-NGAL, using a cut-off of 1,200 ng/ml, it had a sensitivity of 1 and specifi city of 0.67. Inter-observer diff erence of RI was low (0.0015 ± 0.0074 (mean ± SD)). CONCLUSIONS: Doppler ultrasound renal RI is non-invasive, rapidly available and easily reproducible, and is at least as good as NGAL as a predictor of AKI in patients with septic shock.link_to_OA_fulltextThe 31st International Symposium on Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine, Brussels, Belgium. 22-25 March 2011.     Clinical and physiological effects of transcranial electrical stimulation position on motor evoked potentials in scoliosis surgery

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>During intraoperative monitoring for scoliosis surgery, we have previously elicited ipsilateral and contralateral motor evoked potentials (MEP) with cross scalp stimulation. Ipsilateral MEPs, which may have comprised summation of early ipsilaterally conducted components and transcallosally or deep white matter stimulated components, can show larger amplitudes than those derived purely from contralateral motor cortex stimulation. We tested this hypothesis using two stimulating positions. We compared intraoperative MEPs in 14 neurologically normal subjects undergoing scoliosis surgery using total intravenous anesthetic regimens.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Trancranial electrical stimulation was applied with both cross scalp (C3C4 or C4C3) or midline (C3Cz or C4Cz) positions. The latter was assumed to be more focal and result in little transcallosal/deep white matter stimulation. A train of 5 square wave stimuli 0.5 ms in duration at up to 200 mA was delivered with 4 ms (250 Hz) interstimulus intervals. Averaged supramaximal MEPs were obtained from the tibialis anterior bilaterally.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The cross scalp stimulating position resulted in supramaximal MEPs that were of significantly higher amplitude, shorter latency and required lower stimulating intensity to elicit overall (Wilcoxon Signed Rank test, p < 0.05 for all), as compared to the midline stimulating position. However, no significant differences were found for all 3 parameters comparing ipsilaterally and contralaterally recorded MEPs (p > 0.05 for all), seen for both stimulating positions individually.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our findings suggest that cross scalp stimulation resulted in MEPs obtained ipsilaterally and contralaterally which may be contributed to by summation of ipsilateral and simultaneous transcallosally or deep white matter conducted stimulation of the opposite motor cortex. Use of this stimulating position is advocated to elicit MEPs under operative circumstances where anesthetic agents may cause suppression of cortical and spinal excitability. Although less focal in nature, cross scalp stimulation would be most suitable for infratentorial or spinal surgery, in contrast to supratentorial neurosurgical procedures.</p

    Cyclic-di-AMP synthesis by the diadenylate cyclase CdaA is modulated by the peptidoglycan biosynthesis enzyme GlmM in lactococcus lactis

The second messenger cyclic-di-adenosine monophosphate (c-di-AMP) plays important roles in growth, virulence, cell wall homeostasis, potassium transport and affects resistance to antibiotics, heat and osmotic stress. Most Firmicutes contain only one c-di-AMP synthesizing diadenylate cyclase (CdaA); however, little is known about signals and effectors controlling CdaA activity and c-di-AMP levels. In this study, a genetic screen was employed to identify components which affect the c-di-AMP level in Lactococcus. We characterized suppressor mutations that restored osmoresistance to spontaneous c-di-AMP phosphodiesterase gdpP mutants, which contain high c-di-AMP levels. Loss-of-function and gain-of-function mutations were identified in the cdaA and gdpP genes, respectively, which led to lower c-di-AMP levels. A mutation was also identified in the phosphoglucosamine mutase gene glmM, which is commonly located within the cdaA operon in bacteria. The glmM I154F mutation resulted in a lowering of the c-di-AMP level and a reduction in the key peptidoglycan precursor UDP-N-acetylglucosamine in L. lactis. C-di-AMP synthesis by CdaA was shown to be inhibited by GlmMI154F more than GlmM and GlmMI154F was found to bind more strongly to CdaA than GlmM. These findings identify GlmM as a c-di-AMP level modulating protein and provide a direct connection between c-di-AMP synthesis and peptidoglycan biosynthesis. c-di-AMP is an essential signalling molecule which affects peptidoglycan homeostasis and resistance against various stressors, however little is known regarding how the c-di-AMP level is regulated in the cell.     A novel psittacine adenovirus identified during an outbreak of avian chlamydiosis and human psittacosis: zoonosis associated with virus-bacterium coinfection in birds

    Chlamydophila psittaci is found worldwide, but is particularly common among psittacine birds in tropical and subtropical regions. While investigating a human psittacosis outbreak that was associated with avian chlamydiosis in Hong Kong, we identified a novel adenovirus in epidemiologically linked Mealy Parrots, which was not present in healthy birds unrelated to the outbreak or in other animals. The novel adenovirus (tentatively named Psittacine adenovirus HKU1) was most closely related to Duck adenovirus A in the Atadenovirus genus. Sequencing showed that the Psittacine adenovirus HKU1 genome consists of 31,735 nucleotides. Comparative genome analysis showed that the Psittacine adenovirus HKU1 genome contains 23 open reading frames (ORFs) with sequence similarity to known adenoviral genes, and six additional ORFs at the 3′ end of the genome. Similar to Duck adenovirus A, the novel adenovirus lacks LH1, LH2 and LH3, which distinguishes it from other viruses in the Atadenovirus genus. Notably, fiber-2 protein, which is present in Aviadenovirus but not Atadenovirus, is also present in Psittacine adenovirus HKU1. Psittacine adenovirus HKU1 had pairwise amino acid sequence identities of 50.3–54.0% for the DNA polymerase, 64.6–70.7% for the penton protein, and 66.1–74.0% for the hexon protein with other Atadenovirus. The C. psittaci bacterial load was positively correlated with adenovirus viral load in the lung. Immunostaining for fiber protein expression was positive in lung and liver tissue cells of affected parrots, confirming active viral replication. No other viruses were found. This is the first documentation of an adenovirus-C. psittaci co-infection in an avian species that was associated with a human outbreak of psittacosis. Viral-bacterial co-infection often increases disease severity in both humans and animals. The role of viral-bacterial co-infection in animal-to-human transmission of infectious agents has not received sufficient attention and should be emphasized in the investigation of disease outbreaks in human and animals. © 2014 To et al.published_or_final_versio

    Dental and prosthodontic status of an over 40 year-old population in Shandong Province, China

    Contains fulltext : 97791.pdf (postprint version ) (Open Access)BACKGROUND: This study aims to (1) describe the dental status using DMFT for the whole dentition and the anterior, premolar and molar regions; (2) determine associations of demographic variables and socio-economic status (SES) with DMFT and tooth replacement; (3) analyze to what extent the goal as proposed by the WHO -'the retention of not less than 20 teeth throughout life' is achieved. METHODS: DMFT and tooth replacement data of 1588 subjects over 40 years from urban and rural sites in Qingdao (Shandong Province, China) were collected. Relative D, M, and F scores per dental region were calculated and compared by paired T-tests. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine relationships with age, gender, place of residence, and SES. RESULTS: Mean numbers of D and F were low (1.36 respectively 0.27) at all ages. Molars had highest chance for D and M. For the molar region every additional year of age gave significantly lower chance for D and higher chance for M (OR: 0.98 and 1.02 respectively; both p </= 0.01). Mean number of M was associated with age (approximately 1.5 in each jaw at 40 years and 6 at 80 years). Females had higher chance for D (OR: 1.34; p </= 0.05) and F (OR: 1.69; p </= 0.01), and lower chance for M (OR: 0.60; p </= 0.01). Urban and rural subjects had similar chance for D; urban subjects had approximately 5 times more chance for F (p </= 0.01). SES had no relationship with D and M, however SES low was associated with F (OR: 0.45; p </= 0.01). Replacements were significantly associated with age (all dental regions except anterior region), gender (all dental regions), place of residence (whole dentition and molar region), and SES (whole dentition and premolar and molar regions). CONCLUSIONS: The majority of subjects presented a reduced dentition. Molars were most frequently affected by D and M. D, M, F and replaced teeth were associated with the background variables, however differently for different dental regions. Above the age of 70 years, only 64% of the subjects presented 'not less than 20 natural teeth'
