Public private partnership in sustainable tourism development in Trang An landscape complex : Ninh Binh in the context of climate change

    Get PDF
The aim was to understand how rapid changes to Trang An through urbanization, tourism, and climate change, are affecting people’s well-being in Truong Yen Commune (Viet Nam). The paper examines the drivers of these changes, and assesses the adaptive capacity of residents, local governments, and the private sector. In an innovative arrangement, the Trang An tourism complex operates through a public-private partnership (PPP) between the Ninh Binh Provincial People’s Committee and the Xuan Truong Corporation, a private company. Local government plays a key role. Proactive comprehensive planning involving government, the private sector, and civil society can reduce environmental and social risks of tourism. The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)Thailand Environment Institute (TEI

Reading and spelling Chinese among beginning readers: What skills make a difference?

    Get PDF
The contributions of six important reading-related skills (phonological awareness, rapid naming, orthographic skills, morphological awareness, listening comprehension, and syntactic skills) to Chinese word and text reading were examined among 290 Chinese first graders in Hong Kong. Rapid naming, but not phonological awareness, was a significant predictor of Chinese word reading and writing to dictation (i.e., spelling) in the context of orthographic skills and morphological awareness. Commonality analyses suggested that orthographic skills and morphological awareness each contributed significant amount of unique variance to Chinese word reading and spelling. Syntactic skills accounted for significant amount of unique variance in reading comprehension at both sentence and passage levels after controlling for the effects of word reading and the other skills, but listening comprehension did not. A model on the interrelationships among the reading-related skills and Chinese reading at both word and text levels was proposed. © 2011 Society for the Scientific Study of Reading.postprin

Sunlight Assisted Degradation of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate by Floating Catalyst TiO2-Coconut Fiber

The increasing number of laundry businesses in Pontianak causes increased laundry waste, which is dangerous for health and the environment because anionic surfactants such as Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (LAS) are hard degradable. Photocatalyst is a method that can be used to degrade the LAS structure. TiO2 carried in coconut fiber can optimize sunlight irradiation in degrading LAS content when light reaches the water's surface. This study aims to determine the characteristics and optimum activity time of photocatalyst TiO2-coconut fiber in degrading LAS. Photocatalyst characterization was carried out using XRD, XRF, and DR-UV, while the optimum activity test of photocatalysts in degrading LAS was carried out using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. XRD diffractogram analysis showed the peaks of coconut fiber at 2θ = 22.2º, 34.8º and TiO2 at 2θ = 25.3º, 37.8º, 48.1º, 55.1º, and 62.1º. The TiO2 attached to the fiber after being synthesized was 21.12%. The band gap of TiO2 and TiO2-coconut fiber is 3.21 and 3.18 eV, with light absorption at 386.5 and 390.3 nm. Photocatalyst was carried out in LAS with a mass ratio of TiO2 and coconut fiber of 20:80; 30:70; 40:60, and 50:50 w/w with a time range of 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes. The results of photocatalysis of TiO2-coconut fiber in a ratio of 20:80 w/w showed the optimum photocatalytic activity at 120 minutes with the highest degradation rate of 80.43%. This research is expected to be applied as an alternative to handling LAS in laundry industry waste

The Prognostic Value of Non-Linear Analysis of Heart Rate Variability in Patients with Congestive Heart Failure—A Pilot Study of Multiscale Entropy

AIMS: The influences of nonstationarity and nonlinearity on heart rate time series can be mathematically qualified or quantified by multiscale entropy (MSE). The aim of this study is to investigate the prognostic value of parameters derived from MSE in the patients with systolic heart failure. METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients with systolic heart failure were enrolled in this study. One month after clinical condition being stable, 24-hour Holter electrocardiogram was recording. MSE as well as other standard parameters of heart rate variability (HRV) and detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) were assessed. A total of 40 heart failure patients with a mea age of 56±16 years were enrolled and followed-up for 684±441 days. There were 25 patients receiving β-blockers treatment. During follow-up period, 6 patients died or received urgent heart transplantation. The short-term exponent of DFA and the slope of MSE between scale 1 to 5 were significantly different between patients with or without β-blockers (p = 0.014 and p = 0.028). Only the area under the MSE curve for scale 6 to 20 (Area(6-20)) showed the strongest predictive power between survival (n = 34) and mortality (n = 6) groups among all the parameters. The value of Area(6-20)21.2 served as a significant predictor of mortality or heart transplant (p = 0.0014). CONCLUSION: The area under the MSE curve for scale 6 to 20 is not relevant to β-blockers and could further warrant independent risk stratification for the prognosis of CHF patients
