    An Empirical Investigation of U.K. Environmental Targets Disclosure: The Role of Environmental Governance and Performance

    Although an increasing number of companies have publicly declared environmental targets (ETs), scant research has been conducted in this area. This study, therefore, investigates the extent of corporate environmental targets disclosure (ETD) and empirically examines whether environmental governance and performance influence the ETD of companies in the U.K. during the 2005–2013 period. We find that firms show a large degree of variability and inconsistency in their reporting of ETs. The results indicate that U.K. firms, particularly those with high environmental sensitivity, tend to disclose symbolic soft or semi-hard ETs to manage stakeholder perceptions and legitimize their existence. Moreover, Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines, sustainability committees, and sustainability assurance show positive relationships with ETD. We also find that U.K. firms that perform well environmentally are likely to set and disclose hard ETs. These results support stakeholder, legitimacy, and impression management theories. We suggest that there is a need for regulations that will not only enhance the usefulness of ETD but also encourage companies to take serious proactive action to reduce negative environmental impacts, possibly creating ‘win-win’ solutions. Our findings have important implications for policy-makers and various stakeholder groups

    Nonequilibrium thermodynamics of interacting tunneling transport: variational grand potential, density-functional formulation, and nature of steady-state forces

    The standard formulation of tunneling transport rests on an open-boundary modeling. There, conserving approximations to nonequilibrium Green function or quantum-statistical mechanics provide consistent but computational costly approaches; alternatively, use of density-dependent ballistic-transport calculations [e.g., Phys. Rev. B 52, 5335 (1995)], here denoted `DBT', provide computationally efficient (approximate) atomistic characterizations of the electron behavior but has until now lacked a formal justification. This paper presents an exact, variational nonequilibrium thermodynamic theory for fully interacting tunneling and provides a rigorous foundation for frozen-nuclei DBT calculations as a lowest order approximation to an exact nonequilibrium thermodynamics density functional evaluation. The theory starts from the complete electron nonequilibrium quantum statistical mechanics and I identify the operator for the nonequilibrium Gibbs free energy. I demonstrate a minimal property of a functional for the nonequilibrium thermodynamic grand potential which thus uniquely identifies the solution as the exact nonequilibrium density matrix. I also show that a uniqueness-of-density proof from a closely related study [Phys. Rev. B 78, 165109 (2008)] makes it possible to provide a single-particle formulation based on universal electron-density functionals. I illustrate a formal evaluation of the thermodynamics grand potential value which is closely related to the variation in scattering phase shifts and hence to Friedel density oscillations. This paper also discusses the difference between the here-presented exact thermodynamics forces and the often-used electrostatic forces. Finally the paper documents an inherent adiabatic nature of the thermodynamics forces and observes that these are suited for a nonequilibrium implementation of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation.Comment: 37 pages, 3 Figure

    This advert makes me cry: Disclosure of emotional response to advertisement on Facebook

    As social media is transforming how consumers interact with brands and how brand-related content is consumed, this paper aims to investigate if and how Facebook users express their emotions towards advertisements of brand share on the site. Seven hundred and three comments about the Lloyds 250th Anniversary advertisement on Facebook were analysed as positive, negative or neutral attitude towards the advert. Facebook users found the advertisement emotionally appealing and voluntarily report their emotion of love, pride and in some cases anger. The presence of an iconic image like the black horse and the cover music was found to be emotionally appealing. The background music as well aroused positive emotions and engaging. This study introduces the possibility of analysing Facebook comments on brand content to understand consumers’ emotional responses and attitudes to the brand. Managers can explore these opportunities to identify what consumers find interesting in advertisements and how best to develop their creative strategies. It also offers the opportunity to allocate resources better to engage consumers with creative advertisement. Unlike interviews or surveys, this is a pioneering study on measuring emotional responses to advertisement through users’ self-report on social media

    Who still dies young in a rich city? Revisiting the case of Oxford

    There are substantial inequalities in mortality and life expectancy in England, strongly linked to levels of deprivation. Mortality rates among those who are homeless are particularly high. Using the city of Oxford (UK) as a case study, we investigate ward-level premature standardised mortality ratios for several three-year and five-year periods between 2002 and 2016, and explore the extent to which the mortality of people who become homeless contributed to any rise or fall in geographical inequalities during this period. Age–sex standardised mortality ratios (SMRs) for people aged under 65 years old, with and without deaths among the homeless population, were calculated using Office for National Statistics Death Registration data for England and Wales 2002−2016. Individuals who were homeless or vulnerably housed were identified using records supplied by a local Oxford homeless charity. We found that in an increasingly wealthy, and healthy, city there were persistent ward-level inequalities in mortality, which the city-wide decrease in premature mortality over the period masked. Premature deaths among homeless people in Oxford became an increasingly important contributor to the overall geographical inequalities in health in this city. In the ward with the highest SMR, deaths among the homeless population accounted for 73% of all premature deaths of residents over the whole period; in 2014–2016 this proportion rose to 88%. Homelessness among men (the vast majority of the known homeless population) in this gentrifying English city rose to become the key explanation of geographical mortality patterns in deaths before age 65 across the entire city, particularly after 2011. Oxford reflects a broader pattern now found in many places across England of increasing homeless deaths, widening geographical inequalities in life expectancy, and sharp increases in all-age SMRs.     Crosstalk between reactive oxygen species and pro-inflammatory markers in developing various chronic diseases: a review

    The inflammation process in the human body plays a central role in the pathogenesis of many chronic diseases. In addition, reactive oxygen species (ROS) exert potentially a decisive role in human body, particularly in physiological and pathological process. The chronic inflammation state could generate several types of diseases such as cancer, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus and arthritis, especially if it is concomitant with high levels of pro-inflammatory markers and ROS. The respiratory burst of inflammatory cells during inflammation increases the production and accumulation of ROS. However, ROS regulate various types of kinases and transcription factors such nuclear factor-kappa B which is related to the activation of pro-inflammatory genes. The exact crosstalk between pro-inflammatory markers and ROS in terms of pathogenesis and development of serious diseases is still ambitious. Many studies have been attempting to determine the mechanistic mutual relationship between ROS and pro-inflammatory markers. Therefore hereby, we review the hypothetical relationship between ROS and pro-inflammatory markers in which they have been proposed to initiate cancer, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus and arthritis

    Development of oxidase 'priming' in maturing HL60 cells: Correlation with protein expression and tyrosine phosphorylation

    AbstractThe mechanisms involved in ‘primi’ of the oxidase response of neutrophils are unknown. Two major problems are encountered in using circulating neutrophils; firstly, prior exposure to circulating ‘priming’ cytokines cannot be controlled and secondly, non-intentional ‘priming’ during cell separation can occur. In this study, these problems were avoided by differentiating the promyeloid leukaemic cell line, HL60, towards granulocytes using dibutyrl cyclic AMP, to produce a `virgin cell' model system. We have demonstrated that the ability of substance P to both prime the oxidase response and induce tyrosine phosphorylation increased during differentiation. The major tyrosine-phosphorylated protein, with molecular weight of 74 kDa, was not recognised by anti-c-rafl antibodies. Furthermore, c-rafl expression rapidly declined during HL60 cell granulocytic differentiation. This data shows that although there was no simple relationship between c-raf quantity and priming, the data were consistent with tyrosine phosphorylation of a 74 kDa protein being important for oxidase ‘priming’
