    An investigation into the effects of gender, prior academic achievement, place of residence, age and attendance on first year undergraduate attainment

    The number of people engaging in higher education (HE) has increased considerably over the past decade. However, there is a need to achieve a balance between increasing access and bearing down on rates of non-completion. It has been argued that poor attainment and failure within the first year are significant contributors to the overall statistics for non-progression and that, although research has concentrated on factors causative of student withdrawal, less attention has focused on students who fail academically. This study investigated the effects of a number of a number of factors on the academic attainment of first-year undergraduates within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Glamorgan. Results showed that gender and age had only minor impacts upon educational achievement, while place of residence, prior educational attainment and attendance emerged as significant predictors of attainment. Further analysis showed these three factors to be interrelated , with attendance correlating strongly with both entry points and place or residence. In turn, prior attainment was strongly linked to place of residence. Findings may be used to identify and proactively target students at risk of poor academic performance and dropout in order in order to improve rates of performance and progression

    The Design of an Uncertainty Model For The Tidal Constituent and Residual Interpolation (TCARI) Method for Tidal Correction of Bathymetric Data

    Recent advances in processing multibeam sonar data brought about by the Combined Uncertainty and Bathymetric Estimator (CUBE) [1] have demonstrated the value of identifying and tracking survey uncertainties. Most of these uncertainties were outlined in Hare, Godin, and Mayer uncertainty model developed in 1995 [2]. That report identified the uncertainties in the various electronic systems used to acquire the bathymetric data. However, one of the largest contributors to the overall error budge t in a near coastal hydrographic survey is that contributed by water level uncertainty. As the ocean mapping industry pushes for ever finer spatial details in its data, the traditional method of discrete tide zoning [3] must be abandoned for a more robust method that can match the requirements of the data. The method currently under investigation by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is the Tidal Constituent And Residual Interpolation (TCARI) method [4]. TCARI has the ability to interpolate the water level at a vessel’s position for any location and instance in time. It can also produce a gridded water level surface of the entire survey area. While the potential of this method is encouraging, a rigorous investigation of the uncertainties associated with it has yet to be completed. This research seeks to close that gap by examining the uncertainties in this method, using both observed water level information from around the country as well as data acquired during the original 1995 NOS Kinematic GPS experiment in Galveston Bay, Texas [5]

    Do Sales Matter? Evidence from UK Food Retailing

    This paper assesses the role of sales as a feature of price dynamics using scanner data. The study analyses a unique, high frequency panel of supermarket prices consisting of over 230,000 weekly price observations on around 500 products in 15 categories of food stocked by the UK’s seven largest retail chains. In all, 1,700 weekly time series are available at the barcode-specific level including branded and own-label products. The data allows the frequency, magnitude and duration of sales to be analysed in greater detail than has hitherto been possible with UK data. The main results are: (i) sales are a key feature of aggregate price variation with around 40 per cent of price variation being accounted for by sales once price differences for each UPC level across the major retailers are accounted for; (ii) much of the price variation that is observed in the UK food retailing sector is accounted for by price differences between retailers; (iii) only a small proportion of price variation that is observed in UK food retailing is common across the major retailers suggesting that cost shocks originating at the manufacturing level is not one of the main sources of price variation in the UK; (iv) own-label products also exhibit considerable sales behaviour though this is less important than sales for branded goods; and (v) there is some evidence of coordination in the timing of sales across retailers insofar as the probability of a sale at the UPC level at a given retailer increases if the product is also on sale at another retailer.Sales, price variation, retail, Consumer/Household Economics, Demand and Price Analysis, L16, L66, Q13.,

    Descriptions of Pupae of South American Robber Flies (Diptera: Asilidae)

    The pupae of four South American species of robber flies, Diogmites vulgaris Carrera, Mallophora ruficauda (Wiedemann), Mallophora sylverii Macquart, and Triorla striola (F.), are described and illustrated. The pupae of these species are compared morphologically with those of North American species of the same genera. A key to pupae of Asilidae at the subfamily level is provided. Biological notes associated with the specimens examined and with those of Pseudorus distendens (Wiedemann) indicate that the larvae prey upon immature stages of Scarabaeidae (Dyscinetus rugifrons LeConte for D. vulgaris and M. sylverii, Cyclocephala signaticollis Burmeister for M. ruficauda, and a cerambycid beetle for P. distendens). The notes also provide information on habitat, phenology, and duration of immature stages

    Buyer power in U.K. food retailing: a 'first-pass' test

    Habtu Weldegebriel, University of Warwick Abstract The potential existence of buyer power in U.K. food retailing has attracted the scrutiny of the U.K.'s anti-trust authorities, culminating in the second of two comprehensive regulatory inquiries in recent years. Such inquiries are authoritative but correspondingly time-consuming and costly. Moreover, detection of buyer power has been dogged by the paucity of reliable evidence of its existence. In this paper, we present a simple theoretical model of oligopsony which delivers quasi-reduced form retailer-producer pricing equations with which the null of perfect competition can be tested using readily available market data. Using a cointegrated vector autoregression, we find empirical results that show the null of perfect competition can be rejected in seven of the nine food products investigated. Though not conclusive on the existence of buyer power, the proposed test offers a means via which the behaviour of the retail-producer price spread is consistent with it. At the very least, it can corroborate the concerns of the anti-trust authorities as to whether buyer power is potentially one source of concern

    Macroevolutionary Patterns In The Evolutionary Radiation Of Archosaurs (Tetrapoda: Diapsida)

    The rise of archosaurs during the Triassic and Early Jurassic has been treated as a classic example of an evolutionary radiation in the fossil record. This paper reviews published studies and provides new data on archosaur lineage origination, diversity and lineage evolution, morphological disparity, rates of morphological character change, and faunal abundance during the Triassic–Early Jurassic. The fundamental archosaur lineages originated early in the Triassic, in concert with the highest rates of character change. Disparity and diversity peaked later, during the Norian, but the most significant increase in disparity occurred before maximum diversity. Archosaurs were rare components of Early–Middle Triassic faunas, but were more abundant in the Late Triassic and pre-eminent globally by the Early Jurassic. The archosaur radiation was a drawn-out event and major components such as diversity and abundance were discordant from each other. Crurotarsans (crocodile-line archosaurs) were more disparate, diverse, and abundant than avemetatarsalians (bird-line archosaurs, including dinosaurs) during the Late Triassic, but these roles were reversed in the Early Jurassic. There is no strong evidence that dinosaurs outcompeted or gradually eclipsed crurotarsans during the Late Triassic. Instead, crurotarsan diversity decreased precipitously by the end-Triassic extinction, which helped usher in the age of dinosaurian dominance

    Lucerne production following residual herbicides used in northern cropping systems

    Lucerne ( Medicago sativa L.) is finding an increasing role in dryland farming systems of the grain region of northern New South Wales and Queensland as a ley legume to improve soil fertility, grain yield and quality. Residual herbicides play an essential role in weed management in crop rotations in this region, although their persistent residues may damage the susceptible crops sown following their use. Experiments were conducted on two soil types to test the effects of application time of residual herbicides (winter and summer) on the survival and production of lucerne sown in the following autumn/winter. The effect of the herbicides on initial seedling growth varied with herbicide, rate of application and soil type. Seedling establishment was not affected. Reduced seedling vigour and phototoxicity were evident in some treatments. However, irrespective of seedling response, the lucerne recovered with no subsequent reduction in dry matter production at any site at the first cut taken 5 months after sowing
