Information, information processing and gravity
I discuss fundamental limits placed on information and information processing
by gravity. Such limits arise because both information and its processing
require energy, while gravitational collapse (formation of a horizon or black
hole) restricts the amount of energy allowed in a finite region. Specifically,
I use a criterion for gravitational collapse called the hoop conjecture. Once
the hoop conjecture is assumed a number of results can be obtained directly:
the existence of a fundamental uncertainty in spatial distance of order the
Planck length, bounds on information (entropy) in a finite region, and a bound
on the rate of information processing in a finite region. In the final section
I discuss some cosmological issues related to the total amount of information
in the universe, and note that almost all detailed aspects of the late universe
are determined by the randomness of quantum outcomes. This paper is based on a

Efficient Bayesian Nonparametric Modelling of Structured Point Processes
This paper presents a Bayesian generative model for dependent Cox point
processes, alongside an efficient inference scheme which scales as if the point
processes were modelled independently. We can handle missing data naturally,
infer latent structure, and cope with large numbers of observed processes. A
further novel contribution enables the model to work effectively in higher
dimensional spaces. Using this method, we achieve vastly improved predictive

Activation of σ28-dependent transcription inEscherichia coliby the cyclic AMP receptor protein requires an unusual promoter organization
The Escherichia coli aer regulatory region contains a single promoter that is recognized by RNA polymerase containing the flagellar sigma factor, σ28. Expression from this promoter is dependent on direct activation by the cyclic AMP receptor protein, which binds to a target centred 49.5 base pairs upstream from the transcript start. Activator-dependent transcription from the aer promoter was reconstituted in vitro, and a tethered inorganic nuclease was used to find the position of the C-terminal domains of the RNA polymerase α subunits in transcriptionally competent open complexes. We report that the ternary activator-RNA polymerase-aer promoter open complex is organized differently from complexes at previously characterized promoters. Among other E. coli promoters recognized by RNA polymerase containing σ28, only the trg promoter is activated directly by the cyclic AMP receptor protein. The organization of the different promoter elements and the activator binding site at the trg promoter is the same as at the aer promoter, suggesting a common activation mechanism
SN 1987A's Circumstellar Envelope, II: Kinematics of the Three Rings and the Diffuse Nebula
We present several different measurements of the velocities of structures
within the circumstellar envelope of SN 1987A, including the inner, equatorial
ring (ER), outer rings (ORs), and the diffuse nebulosity at radii < 5 pc, based
on CTIO 4m and HST data. A comparison of STIS and WFPC2 [N II]6583 loci for the
rings show that the ER is expanding in radius at 10.5+-0.3 km/s, with the
northern OR expanding along the line of sight at about 26 km/s, and for the
southern OR, about 23 km/s. Similar results are found with CTIO 4m data.
Accounting for inclination, the best fit to all data show both ORs with an
expansion from the SN of 26 km/s. The ratio of the ER to OR velocities is
nearly equal to the ratio of ER to OR radii, so the rings are roughly
homologous, all having kinematic ages corresponding to about 20,000 yr before
the SN explosion. This makes previously reported, large compositional
differences between the ER and ORs difficult to understand. Additionally, a
grid of longslit 4m/echelle spectra centered on the SN shows two velocity
components over a region roughly coextensive with the outer circumstellar
envelope extending about 5 pc (20 arcsec) from the SN. One component is
blueshifted and the other redshifted from the SN centroid by about 10 km/s
each. These features may represent a bipolar flow expanding from the SN, in
which the ORs are propelled 10-15 km/s faster than that of the surrounding
envelope into which they propogate. The kinematic timescale for the entire
nebula is at least about 350,000 yr. The kinematics of these various structures
constrain possible models for the evolution of the progenitor and its formation

Agouti C57BL/6N embryonic stem cells for mouse genetic resources.
We report the characterization of a highly germline competent C57BL/6N mouse embryonic stem cell line, JM8. To simplify breeding schemes, the dominant agouti coat color gene was restored in JM8 cells by targeted repair of the C57BL/6 nonagouti mutation. These cells provide a robust foundation for large-scale mouse knockout programs that aim to provide a public resource of targeted mutations in the C57BL/6 genetic background
TEDI: the TripleSpec Exoplanet Discovery Instrument
The TEDI (TripleSpec - Exoplanet Discovery Instrument) will be the first
instrument fielded specifically for finding low-mass stellar companions. The
instrument is a near infra-red interferometric spectrometer used as a radial
velocimeter. TEDI joins Externally Dispersed Interferometery (EDI) with an
efficient, medium-resolution, near IR (0.9 - 2.4 micron) echelle spectrometer,
TripleSpec, at the Palomar 200" telescope. We describe the instrument and its

Universal continuous-variable quantum computation: Requirement of optical nonlinearity for photon counting
Although universal continuous-variable quantum computation cannot be achieved
via linear optics (including squeezing), homodyne detection and feed-forward,
inclusion of ideal photon counting measurements overcomes this obstacle. These
measurements are sometimes described by arrays of beam splitters to distribute
the photons across several modes. We show that such a scheme cannot be used to
implement ideal photon counting and that such measurements necessarily involve
nonlinear evolution. However, this requirement of nonlinearity can be moved
"off-line," thereby permitting universal continuous-variable quantum
