    Treating a maxillary midline diastema in adult patients: A general dentist's perspective

    Background: A maxillary midline diastema (MMD) often is a primary concern of patients during a dental consultation. Although an MMD can be transient owing to the developing dentition and, thus, requires no active treatment, management of MMDs in the permanent dentition requires a detailed examination and appropriate care. Case Descriptions: The authors present five cases of MMDs in adults to illustrate a range of restorative and orthodontic options. In the first case, the clinician used resin-based composite buildup to close an MMD resulting from small teeth and generalized spacing in the dental arch. In the second case, the clinician placed porcelain veneers to treat an MMD in a patient with discolored dentition. In the third case, the clinician fitted a removable appliance to close an MMD by tipping the incisors palatally. In the fourth case, the clinician fitted a sectional fixed appliance to promote mesial bodily movement of the incisors. In the fifth case, the clinician placed a full-arch fixed appliance to treat an MMD caused by tilted incisors. Conclusions and Clinical Implications: Effective treatment requires an accurate diagnosis and appropriate intervention. General dentists can perform a range of restorative and orthodontic treatments in appropriate clinical situations to address patients' concerns.link_to_subscribed_fulltex

    Experimental and theoretical studies of lifetimes and transition probabilities for Au II

    We report lifetime measurements for three of the 5d(9)6p levels in An II and relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) calculations of lifetimes and transitions probabilities in this ion. The work was motivated by significant disagreements between previous experimental 5d(9)6p lifetimes, obtained by means of the beam-foil (BF) method and theoretical data based on Hartree-Fock calculations in which relativistic effects were included as perturbations. The new measurements, based on laser-induced fluorescence, support the BF data and are also in excellent agreement with the MCDF results. We confirm that, while computational methods which include perturbative relativistic corrections appear to be adequate for moderately heavy elements such as Ag, fully relativistic calculations are essential for describing systems as heavy as Au

    Does psychosocial stress impact cognitive reappraisal? Behavioral and neural evidence

    Cognitive reappraisal (CR) is regarded as an effective emotion regulation strategy. Acute stress, however, is believed to impair the functioning of prefrontal-based neural systems, which could result in lessened effectiveness of CR under stress. This study tested the behavioral and neurobiological impact of acute stress on CR. While undergoing fMRI, adult participants (n = 54) passively viewed or used CR to regulate their response to negative and neutral pictures and provided ratings of their negative affect in response to each picture. Half of the participants experienced an fMRI-adapted acute psychosocial stress manipulation similar to the Trier Social Stress Test, and a contr ol group received parallel manipulations without the stressful components. Relative to the control group, the stress group exhibited heightened stress as indexed by self-report, heart rate, and salivary cortisol throughout the scan. Contrary to our hypothesis, we found that reappraisal success was equivalent in the control and stress groups, as was electrodermal response to the pictures. Heart rate deceleration, a physiological response typically evoked by aversive pictures, was blunted in response to negative pictures and heightened in response to neutral pictures in the stress group. In the brain, we found weak evidence of stress-induced increases of reappraisalrelated activity in parts of the PFC and left amygdala, but these relationships were statistically fragile. Together, these findings suggest that both the self-reported and neural effects of CR may be robust to at least moderate levels of stress, informing theoretical models of stress effects on cognition and emotion

    Electrically controlled long-distance spin transport through an antiferromagnetic insulator

    Spintronics uses spins, the intrinsic angular momentum of electrons, as an alternative for the electron charge. Its long-term goal is in the development of beyond-Moore low dissipation technology devices. Recent progress demonstrated the long-distance transport of spin signals across ferromagnetic insulators. Antiferromagnetically ordered materials are however the most common class of magnetic materials with several crucial advantages over ferromagnetic systems. In contrast to the latter, antiferromagnets exhibit no net magnetic moment, which renders them stable and impervious to external fields. In addition, they can be operated at THz frequencies. While fundamentally their properties bode well for spin transport, previous indirect observations indicate that spin transmission through antiferromagnets is limited to short distances of a few nanometers. Here we demonstrate the long-distance, over tens of micrometers, propagation of spin currents through hematite (\alpha-Fe2O3), the most common antiferromagnetic iron oxide, exploiting the spin Hall effect for spin injection. We control the spin current flow by the interfacial spin-bias and by tuning the antiferromagnetic resonance frequency with an external magnetic field. This simple antiferromagnetic insulator is shown to convey spin information parallel to the compensated moment (N\'eel order) over distances exceeding tens of micrometers. This newly-discovered mechanism transports spin as efficiently as the net magnetic moments in the best-suited complex ferromagnets. Our results pave the way to ultra-fast, low-power antiferromagnet-insulator-based spin-logic devices that operate at room temperature and in the absence of magnetic fields

    Indirect and direct impacts of typhoon In-Fa (2021) on heavy precipitation in inland and coastal areas of China: synoptic-scale environments and return period analysis

    In July 2021, Typhoon In-Fa (TIF) triggered a significant indirect heavy precipitation event (HPE) in central China and a direct HPE in eastern China. Both these events led to severe disasters. However, the synoptic-scale conditions and the impacts of these HPEs on future estimations of return periods remain poorly understood. Here, we find that the remote HPE that occurred̰2200 km ahead of TIF over central China was a predecessor rain event (PRE). The PRE unfolded under the equatorward entrance of the upper-level westerly jet. This event, which encouraged divergent and adiabatic outflow in the upper level, subsequently intensified the strength of the upper-level westerly jet. In contrast, the direct HPE in eastern China was due primarily to the long duration and slow movement of TIF. The direct HPE occurred in areas situated less than 200 km from TIF’s center and to the left of TIF’s propagation trajectory. Anomaly analyses reveal favorable thermodynamic and dynamic conditions and abundant atmospheric moisture that sustained TIF’s intensity. A saddle-shaped pressure field in the north of eastern China and peripheral weak steering flow impeded TIF’s movement northward. Hydrologically, the inclusion of these two HPEs in the historical record leads to a decrease in the estimated return periods of similar HPEs. Our findings highlight the potential difficulties that HPEs could introduce for the design of hydraulic engineering infrastructure as well as for the disaster mitigation measures required to alleviate future risk, particularly in central China
