    Translocation and metabolism of tricresyl phosphate in rice and microbiome system: Isomer-specific processes and overlooked metabolites.

    Tricresyl phosphate (TCP) is extensively used organophosphorus flame retardants and plasticizers that posed risks to organisms and human beings. In this study, the translocation and biotransformation behavior of isomers tri-p-cresyl phosphate (TpCP), tri-m-cresyl phosphate (TmCP), and tri-o-cresyl phosphate (ToCP) in rice and rhizosphere microbiome was explored by hydroponic exposure. TpCP and TmCP were found more liable to be translocated acropetally, compared with ToCP, although they have same molecular weight and similar Kow. Rhizosphere microbiome named microbial consortium GY could reduce the uptake of TpCP, TmCP, and ToCP in rice tissues, and promote rice growth. New metabolites were successfully identified in rice and microbiome, including hydrolysis, hydroxylated, methylated, demethylated, methoxylated, and glucuronide- products. The methylation, demethylation, methoxylation, and glycosylation pathways of TCP isomers were observed for the first time in organisms. What is more important is that the demethylation of TCPs could be an important and overlooked source of triphenyl phosphate (TPHP), which broke the traditional understanding of the only man- made source of toxic TPHP in the environment. Active members of the microbial consortium GY during degradation were revealed and metagenomic analysis indicated that most of active populations contained TCP- degrading genes. It is noteworthy that the strains and function genes in microbial consortium GY that responsible for TCP isomers’ transformation were different. These results can improve our understanding of the translocation and transformation of organic pollutant isomers in plants and rhizosphere microbiome

    RICD: A rice indica cDNA database resource for rice functional genomics

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The <it>Oryza sativa </it>L. <it>indica </it>subspecies is the most widely cultivated rice. During the last few years, we have collected over 20,000 putative full-length cDNAs and over 40,000 ESTs isolated from various cDNA libraries of two <it>indica </it>varieties Guangluai 4 and Minghui 63. A database of the rice <it>indica </it>cDNAs was therefore built to provide a comprehensive web data source for searching and retrieving the <it>indica </it>cDNA clones.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Rice <it>Indica </it>cDNA Database (RICD) is an online MySQL-PHP driven database with a user-friendly web interface. It allows investigators to query the cDNA clones by keyword, genome position, nucleotide or protein sequence, and putative function. It also provides a series of information, including sequences, protein domain annotations, similarity search results, SNPs and InDels information, and hyperlinks to gene annotation in both The Rice Annotation Project Database (RAP-DB) and The TIGR Rice Genome Annotation Resource, expression atlas in RiceGE and variation report in Gramene of each cDNA.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The online rice <it>indica </it>cDNA database provides cDNA resource with comprehensive information to researchers for functional analysis of <it>indica </it>subspecies and for comparative genomics.     New Superhard Carbon Phases Between Graphite and Diamond

    Two new carbon allotropes (H-carbon and S-carbon) are proposed, as possible candidates for the intermediate superhard phases between graphite and diamond obtained in the process of cold compressing graphite, based on the results of first-principles calculations. Both H-carbon and S-carbon are more stable than previously proposed M-carbon and W-carbon and their bulk modulus are comparable to that of diamond. H-carbon is an indirect-band-gap semiconductor with a gap of 4.459 eV and S-carbon is a direct-band-gap semiconductor with a gap of 4.343 eV.     Continuous Mott transition in semiconductor moir\'e superlattices

    The evolution of a Landau Fermi liquid into a nonmagnetic Mott insulator with increasing electronic interactions is one of the most puzzling quantum phase transitions in physics. The vicinity of the transition is believed to host exotic states of matter such as quantum spin liquids, exciton condensates and unconventional superconductivity. Semiconductor moir\'e materials realize a highly controllable Hubbard model simulator on a triangular lattice, providing a unique opportunity to drive a metal-insulator transition (MIT) via continuous tuning of the electronic interactions. Here, by electrically tuning the effective interaction strength in MoTe2/WSe2 moir\'e superlattices, we observe a continuous MIT at a fixed filling of one electron per unit cell. The existence of quantum criticality is supported by the scaling behavior of the resistance, a continuously vanishing charge-gap as the critical point is approached from the insulating side, and a diverging quasiparticle effective mass from the metallic side. We also observe a smooth evolution of the low-temperature magnetic susceptibility across the MIT and find no evidence of long-range magnetic order down to ~ 5% of the Curie-Weiss temperature. The results signal an abundance of low-energy spinful excitations on the insulating side that is further corroborated by the presence of the Pomeranchuk effect on the metallic side. Our results are consistent with the universal critical theory of a continuous MIT from a Landau Fermi liquid to a nonmagnetic Mott insulator in two dimensions

    Fate of the distal aorta following root replacement in Marfan syndrome: a propensity score matched study

    ObjectiveThe aortic root is the most frequent segment involved in Marfan syndrome. However, Marfan syndrome is a systemic hereditary connective tissue disorder, and knowledge regarding the outcomes of the native distal aorta after prophylactic aortic root surgery is limited.MethodsFrom April 2010 to December 2020, 226 patients with Marfan syndrome and 1,200 patients without Marfan syndrome who underwent Bentall procedures were included in this study. By propensity score matching, 134 patients were assigned to each group. Clinical manifestations and follow-up data were acquired from hospital records and telephone contact. The cumulative incidence of aortic events was estimated in Marfan and non-Marfan patients with death as a competing risk.ResultsPatients with and without Marfan syndrome had similar baseline characteristics after propensity score matching. Differences in the aortic root (62.25 ± 11.96 vs. 54.03 ± 13.76, P &lt; .001) and ascending aorta (37.71 ± 9.86 vs. 48.16 ± 16.01, P &lt; .001) remained after matching. No difference was observed in the frequency of aortic adverse events between the two groups (10.5% vs. 4.6%, P = 0.106). The cumulative incidence of aortic events was not different between Marfan and non-Marfan patients (15.03% ± 4.72% vs. 4.18% ± 2.06%, P = 0.147). Multivariate Cox regression indicated no significant impact of Marfan syndrome on distal aortic events (HR: 1.172, 95% CI: 0.263–5.230, P = 0.835). Descending and abdominal aortic diameter above normal at the initial procedure were associated with the risk of distal aortic events (HR: 20.735, P = .003, HR: 22.981, P = .002, respectively).ConclusionsNew-onset events of the residual aorta in patients undergoing Bentall procedures between the Marfan and non-Marfan groups were not significantly different. Distal aortic diameter above normal at initial surgery was associated with a higher risk of adverse aortic events

    Global genome expression analysis of rice in response to drought and high-salinity stresses in shoot, flag leaf, and panicle

    To elucidate genome-level responses to drought and high-salinity stress in rice, a 70mer oligomer microarray covering 36,926 unique genes or gene models was used to profile genome expression changes in rice shoot, flag leaf and panicle under drought or high-salinity conditions. While patterns of gene expression in response to drought or high-salinity stress within a particular organ type showed significant overlap, comparison of expression profiles among different organs showed largely organ-specific patterns of regulation. Moreover, both stresses appear to alter the expression patterns of a significant number of genes involved in transcription and cell signaling in a largely organ-specific manner. The promoter regions of genes induced by both stresses or induced by one stress in more than one organ types possess relative enrichment of two cis-elements (ABRE core and DRE core) known to be associated with water stress. An initial computational analysis indicated that novel promoter motifs are present in the promoters of genes involved in rehydration after drought. This analysis suggested that rice might possess a mechanism that actively detects rehydration and facilitates rapid recovery. Overall, our data supports a notion that organ-specific gene regulation in response to the two abiotic stresses may primarily be mediated by organ-specific transcription responses.
