    Dysglycemia and arrhythmias

    Disorders in glucose metabolism can be divided into three separate but interrelated domains, namely hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, and glycemic variability. Intensive glycemic control in patients with diabetes might increase the risk of hypoglycemic incidents and glucose fluctuations. These three dysglycemic states occur not only amongst patients with diabetes, but are frequently present in other clinical settings, such as during critically ill. A growing body of evidence has focused on the relationships between these dysglycemic domains with cardiac arrhythmias, including supraventricular arrhythmias (primarily atrial fibrillation), ventricular arrhythmias (malignant ventricular arrhythmias and QT interval prolongation), and bradyarrhythmias (bradycardia and heart block). Different mechanisms by which these dysglycemic states might provoke cardiac arr-hythmias have been identified in experimental studies. A customized glycemic control strategy to minimize the risk of hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia and glucose variability is of the utmost importance in order to mitigate the risk of cardiac arrhythmias

    Unconscious Processing of Facial Emotional Valence Relation: Behavioral Evidence of Integration between Subliminally Perceived Stimuli

    Although a few studies have investigated the integration between some types of unconscious stimuli, no research has yet explored the integration between unconscious emotional stimuli. This study was designed to provide behavioral evidence for the integration between unconsciously perceived emotional faces (same or different valence relation) using a modified priming paradigm. In two experiments, participants were asked to decide whether two faces in the target, which followed two subliminally presented faces of same or different emotional expressions, were of the same or different emotional valence. The interstimulus interval (ISI) between the prime and the target was manipulated (0, 53, 163 ms). In Experiment 1, prime visibility was assessed post-experiment. In Experiment 2, it was assessed on each trial. Interestingly, in both experiments, unconsciously processed valence relation of the two faces in the prime generated a negative priming effect in the response to the supraliminally presented target, independent of the length of ISI. Further analyses suggested that the negative priming was probably caused by a motor response incongruent relation between the subliminally perceived prime and the supraliminally perceived target. The visual feature incongruent relation across the prime and target was not found to play a role in the negative priming. Because the negative priming was found at short ISI, an attention mechanism as well as a motor inhibition mechanism were proposed in the generation of the negative priming effect. Overall, this study indicated that the subliminal valence relation was processed, and that integration between different unconsciously perceived stimuli could occur

    Memory effect and multifractality of cross-correlations in financial markets

    An average instantaneous cross-correlation function is introduced to quantify the interaction of the financial market of a specific time. Based on the daily data of the American and Chinese stock markets, memory effect of the average instantaneous cross-correlations is investigated over different price return time intervals. Long-range time-correlations are revealed, and are found to persist up to a month-order magnitude of the price return time interval.     CASOG: Conservative Actor-critic with SmOoth Gradient for Skill Learning in Robot-Assisted Intervention

    Robot-assisted intervention has shown reduced radiation exposure to physicians and improved precision in clinical trials. However, existing vascular robotic systems follow master-slave control mode and entirely rely on manual commands. This paper proposes a novel offline reinforcement learning algorithm, Conservative Actor-critic with SmOoth Gradient (CASOG), to learn manipulation skills from human demonstrations on vascular robotic systems. The proposed algorithm conservatively estimates Q-function and smooths gradients of convolution layers to deal with distribution shift and overfitting issues. Furthermore, to focus on complex manipulations, transitions with larger temporal-difference error are sampled with higher probability. Comparative experiments in a pre-clinical environment demonstrate that CASOG can deliver guidewire to the target at a success rate of 94.00\% and mean backward steps of 14.07, performing closer to humans and better than prior offline reinforcement learning methods.     Erythromycin Enhances CD4+Foxp3+ Regulatory T-Cell Responses in a Rat Model of Smoke-Induced Lung Inflammation

    Heavy smoking can induce airway inflammation and emphysema. Macrolides can modulate inflammation and effector T-cell response in the lungs. However, there is no information on whether erythromycin can modulate regulatory T-cell (Treg) response. This study is aimed at examining the impact of erythromycin on Treg response in the lungs in a rat model of smoking-induced emphysema. Male Wistar rats were exposed to normal air or cigarette smoking daily for 12 weeks and treated by gavage with 100 mg/kg of erythromycin or saline daily beginning at the forth week for nine weeks. The lung inflammation and the numbers of inflammatory infiltrates in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were characterized. The frequency, the number of Tregs, and the levels of Foxp3 expression in the lungs and IL-8, IL-35, and TNF-α in BALF were determined by flow cytometry, RT-PCR and ELISA, respectively. Treatment with erythromycin reduced smoking-induced inflammatory infiltrates, the levels of IL-8 and TNF-α in the BALF and lung damages but increased the numbers of CD4+Foxp3+ Tregs and the levels of Foxp3 transcription in the lungs, accompanied by increased levels of IL-35 in the BALF of rats.     Tunable boson-assisted finite-range interaction and engineering Majorana corner modes in optical lattices

    Nonlocal interaction between ultracold atoms trapped in optical lattices can give rise to interesting quantum many-body phenomena. However, its realization usually demands unconventional techniques, for example the artificial gauge fields or higher-orbit Feshbach resonances, and is not highly controllable. Here, we propose a valid and feasible scheme for realizing a tunable finite-range interaction for spinless fermions immersed into the bath of bosons. The strength of the effective interaction for the fermionic subsystem is artificially tunable by manipulating bosons, ranging from the repulsive to attractive regime. And the interaction distance is locked to the hopping of bosons, making the finite-range interaction perfectly clean for the fermionic subsystem. Specifically we find that, by introducing an additional staggered hopping of bosons, the proposal is readily applied to search the Majorana corner modes in such a spinless system, without implementation of complex artificial gauge fields, which is totally distinct from existing results reported in spinful systems. Therefore this scheme provides a potential platform for exploring the unconventional topological superfluids and other nontrivial phases induced by long-range interactions in ultracold atoms.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
