Excellent buffer layer for growing high-quality Y-Ba-Cu-O thin films

    Get PDF
Eu2CuO4 (ECO) has been used as a buffer layer for growing of YBa2Cu3O7-ä (YBCO) thin films on SrTiO3(100) and Y-stabilized ZrO2(100) substrates. The epitaxy, crystallinity, and surface of YBCO thin films have been significantly improved by using ECO buffer layer as investigated by x-ray diffraction, rocking curves, scanning electron microscope, surface step profiler, and x-ray small-angle reflection. The best value of the full width at half-maximum of the YBCO(005) peak can be greatly reduced down to less than 0.1°. The scanning-electron-microscope photos indicate a very smooth surface for the YBCO thin films. The average roughness is less than 5 nm over a wide scanning region of 2000 ìm. The results of x-ray small-angle reflection indicate a very clear and flat interface between YBCO and ECO layers. Meanwhile, the resistivity of ECO is about 20 times higher than that of PrBa2Cu3Oy at the boiling point of liquid nitrogen. Our results suggest that ECO should be a good barrier candidate for fabricating high-Tc superconductor junctions.published_or_final_versio

Effectively predicting whether and when a topic will become prevalent in a social network

Effective forecasting of future prevalent topics plays an important role in social network business development. It involves two challenging aspects: predicting whether a topic will become prevalent, and when. This cannot be directly handled by the existing algorithms in topic modeling, item recommendation and action forecasting. The classic forecasting framework based on time series models may be able to predict a hot topic when a series of periodical changes to user-addressed frequency in a systematic way. However, the frequency of topics discussed by users often changes irregularly in social networks. In this paper, a generic probabilistic framework is proposed for hot topic prediction, and machine learning methods are explored to predict hot topic patterns. Two effective models, PreWHether and PreWHen, are introduced to predict whether and when a topic will become prevalent. In the PreWHether model, we simulate the constructed features of previously observed frequency changes for better prediction. In the PreWHen model, distributions of time intervals associated with the emergence to prevalence of a topic are modeled. Extensive experiments on real dataseis demonstrate that our method outperforms the baselines and generates more effective predictions

Adipose-derived stromal cells protect intervertebral disc cells in compression: implications for stem cell regenerative disc therapy

INTRODUCTION: Abnormal biomechanics plays a role in intervertebral disc degeneration. Adipose-derived stromal cells (ADSCs) have been implicated in disc integrity; however, their role in the setting of mechanical stimuli upon the disc's nucleus pulposus (NP) remains unknown. As such, the present study aimed to evaluate the influence of ADSCs upon NP cells in compressive load culture. METHODS: Human NP cells were cultured in compressive load at 3.0MPa for 48 hours with or without ADSCs co-culture (the ratio was 50:50). We used flow cytometry, live/dead staining and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to evaluate cell death, and determined the expression of specific apoptotic pathways by characterizing the expression of activated caspases-3, -8 and -9. We further used real-time (RT-) PCR and immunostaining to determine the expression of the extracellular matrix (ECM), mediators of matrix degradation (e.g. MMPs, TIMPs and ADAMTSs), pro-inflammatory factors and NP cell phenotype markers. RESULTS: ADSCs inhibited human NP cell apoptosis via suppression of activated caspase-9 and caspase-3. Furthermore, ADSCs protected NP cells from the degradative effects of compressive load by significantly up-regulating the expression of ECM genes (SOX9, COL2A1 and ACAN), tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) genes (TIMP-1 and TIMP-2) and cytokeratin 8 (CK8) protein expression. Alternatively, ADSCs showed protective effect by inhibiting compressive load mediated increase of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs; MMP-3 and MMP-13), disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs (ADAMTSs; ADAMTS-1 and 5), and pro-inflammatory factors (IL-1beta, IL-6, TGF-beta1 and TNF-alpha). CONCLUSIONS: Our study is the first in vitro study assessing the impact of ADSCs on NP cells in an un-physiological mechanical stimulation culture environment. Our study noted that ADSCs protect compressive load induced NP cell death and degradation by inhibition of activated caspase-9 and -3 activity; regulating ECM and modulator genes, suppressing pro-inflammatory factors and preserving CK8. Consequently, the protective impact of ADSCs found in this study provides an essential understanding and expands our knowledge as to the utility of ADSCs therapy for intervertebral disc regeneration.published_or_final_versio

A possible mechanism to tune magneto-electroluminescence in organic light-emitting diodes through adjusting the triplet exciton density

    Get PDF
At 15 K, the high field decay of magneto-electroluminescence (MEL) in tris (8-hydroxyquinoine) aluminum (Alq 3)-based organic light-emitting diodes is greatly suppressed by mixing hole transport material N,N′-bis(naphthalen-1-y)-N,N′-bis(phenyl) benzidine (NPB) into Alq 3 emission layer. The positive correlation between the MEL decay and the triplet exciton density indicates the reduced triplet exciton density is the major contributing factor. The change of triplet exciton density and then the MEL upon NPB mixing may result from the strengths change of charge-triplets interaction, in which the injected charges flowing through the exciton formation zone without forming static space charges play the most important role. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio
