PEG Branched Polymer for Functionalization of Nanomaterials with Ultralong Blood Circulation

Nanomaterials have been actively pursued for biological and medical applications in recent years. Here, we report the synthesis of several new poly(ethylene glycol) grafted branched-polymers for functionalization of various nanomaterials including carbon nanotubes, gold nanoparticles (NP) and gold nanorods (NRs), affording high aqueous solubility and stability for these materials. We synthesize different surfactant polymers based upon poly-(g-glutamic acid) (gPGA) and poly(maleic anhydride-alt-1-octadecene) (PMHC18). We use the abundant free carboxylic acid groups of gPGA for attaching lipophilic species such as pyrene or phospholipid, which bind to nanomaterials via robust physisorption. Additionally, the remaining carboxylic acids on gPGA or the amine-reactive anhydrides of PMHC18 are then PEGylated, providing extended hydrophilic groups, affording polymeric amphiphiles. We show that single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), Au NPs and NRs functionalized by the polymers exhibit high stability in aqueous solutions at different pHs, at elevated temperatures and in serum. Morever, the polymer-coated SWNTs exhibit remarkably long blood circulation (t1/2 22.1 h) upon intravenous injection into mice, far exceeding the previous record of 5.4 h. The ultra-long blood circulation time suggests greatly delayed clearance of nanomaterials by the reticuloendothelial system (RES) of mice, a highly desired property for in vivo applications of nanomaterials, including imaging and drug delivery

Hierarchical urchin-shaped alpha-MnO2 on graphene-coated carbon microfibers: a binder-free electrode for rechargeable aqueous Na-air battery

With the increasing demand of cost-effective and high-energy devices, sodium-air (Na-air) batteries have attracted immense interest due to the natural abundance of sodium in contrast to lithium. In particular, an aqueous Na-air battery has fundamental advantage over non-aqueous batteries due to the formation of highly water-soluble discharge product, which improve the overall performance of the system in terms of energy density, cyclic stability and round-trip efficiency. Despite these advantages, the rechargeability of aqueous Na-air batteries has not yet been demonstrated when using non-precious metal catalysts. In this work, we rationally synthesized a binder-free and robust electrode by directly growing urchin-shaped MnO2 nanowires on porous reduced graphene oxide-coated carbon microfiber (MGC) mats and fabricated an aqueous Na-air cell using the MGC as an air electrode to demonstrate the rechargeability of an aqueous Na-air battery. The fabricated aqueous Na-air cell exhibited excellent rechargeability and rate capability with a low overpotential gap (0.7 V) and high round-trip efficiency (81%). We believe that our approach opens a new avenue for synthesizing robust and binder-free electrodes that can be utilized to build not only metal-air batteries but also other energy systems such as supercapacitors, metal-ion batteries and fuel cells.ope

INTRODUCTION: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune connective tissue disease affecting predominantly females. To discover additional genetic risk variants for SLE on the X chromosome, we performed a follow-up study of our previously published genome-wide association study (GWAS) data set in this study. METHODS: Twelve single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within novel or unpublished loci with P-value < 1.00 × 10(-02) were selected for genotype with a total of 2,442 cases and 2,798 controls(including 1,156 cases and 2,330 controls from central China, 1,012 cases and 335 controls from southern China and 274 cases and 133 controls from northern China) using Sequenom Massarry system. Associaton analyses were performed using logistic regression with sample region as a covariate through PLINK 1.07 software. RESULTS: Combined analysis in discovery and central validation dataset discovered a novel locus rs5914778 within LINC01420 associated with SLE at genome-wide significance (P = 1.00 × 10(-08); odds ratio (OR) = 1.32). We also confirmed rs5914778 in the southern Chinese sample cohort (P = 5.31 × 10(-05); OR = 1.51), and meta-analysis of the samples from the discovery, central and southern validations regions provided robust evidence for the association of rs5914778 (P = 5.26 × 10(-12); OR = 1.35). However, this SNP did not show association with SLE in the northern sample (P = 0.33). Further analysis represent the association of northern was significantly heterogeneous compared to central and southern respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our study increases the number of established susceptibility loci for SLE in Han Chinese population and has further demonstrated the important role of X-linked genetic risk variants in the pathogenesis of SLE in Chinese Han population.published_or_final_versio

First Measurement of the Branching Fraction of the Decay psi(2S) --> tau tau

The branching fraction of the psi(2S) decay into tau pair has been measured for the first time using the BES detector at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider. The result is Bττ=(2.71±0.43±0.55)×103B_{\tau\tau}=(2.71\pm 0.43 \pm 0.55) \times 10^{-3}, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. This value, along with those for the branching fractions into e+e- and mu+mu of this resonance, satisfy well the relation predicted by the sequential lepton hypothesis. Combining all these values with the leptonic width of the resonance the total width of the psi(2S) is determined to be (252±37)(252 \pm 37) keV.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure

A sample of 3.95M ψ(2S)\psi(2S) decays registered in the BES detector are used to study final states containing pairs of octet and decuplet baryons. We report branching fractions for ψ(2S)ppˉ\psi(2S)\to p\bar{p}, ΛΛˉ\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}, Σ0Σˉ0\Sigma^0\bar{\Sigma}{}^0, ΞΞˉ+\Xi^-\bar{\Xi}{}^+, Δ++Δˉ\Delta^{++}\bar{\Delta}{}^{--}, Σ+(1385)Σˉ(1385)\Sigma^+(1385)\bar{\Sigma}{}^-(1385), Ξ0(1530)Ξˉ0(1530)\Xi^0(1530)\bar{\Xi}{}^0(1530), and ΩΩˉ+\Omega^-\bar{\Omega}{}^+. These results are compared to expectations based on the SU(3)-flavor symmetry, factorization, and perturbative QCD.Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures, 4 table

The Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy Onboard the SATech-01 Satellite

The Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy (LEIA), a pathfinder of the Wide-field X-ray Telescope of the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, was successfully launched onboard the SATech-01 satellite of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on 27 July 2022. In this paper, we introduce the design and on-ground test results of the LEIA instrument. Using state-of-the-art Micro-Pore Optics (MPO), a wide field-of-view (FoV) of 346 square degrees (18.6 degrees * 18.6 degrees) of the X-ray imager is realized. An optical assembly composed of 36 MPO chips is used to focus incident X-ray photons, and four large-format complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensors, each of 6 cm * 6 cm, are used as the focal plane detectors. The instrument has an angular resolution of 4 - 8 arcmin (in FWHM) for the central focal spot of the point spread function, and an effective area of 2 - 3 cm2 at 1 keV in essentially all the directions within the field of view. The detection passband is 0.5 - 4 keV in the soft X-rays and the sensitivity is 2 - 3 * 10-11 erg s-1 cm-2 (about 1 mini-Crab) at 1,000 second observation. The total weight of LEIA is 56 kg and the power is 85 W. The satellite, with a design lifetime of 2 years, operates in a Sun-synchronous orbit of 500 km with an orbital period of 95 minutes. LEIA is paving the way for future missions by verifying in flight the technologies of both novel focusing imaging optics and CMOS sensors for X-ray observation, and by optimizing the working setups of the instrumental parameters. In addition, LEIA is able to carry out scientific observations to find new transients and to monitor known sources in the soft X-ray band, albeit limited useful observing time available.Comment: Accepted by RA

Using a sample of (1310.6±7.0)×106(1310.6\pm7.0)\times10^6 J/ψJ/\psi events recorded with the BESIII detector at the symmetric electron positron collider BEPCII, we report the observation of the decay of the (11S0)(1^1 S_0) charmonium state ηc\eta_c into a pair of ω\omega mesons in the process J/ψγωωJ/\psi\to\gamma\omega\omega. The branching fraction is measured for the first time to be B(ηcωω)=(2.88±0.10±0.46±0.68)×103\mathcal{B}(\eta_c\to\omega\omega)= (2.88\pm0.10\pm0.46\pm0.68)\times10^{-3}, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is from the uncertainty of B(J/ψγηc)\mathcal{B}(J/\psi\to\gamma\eta_c). The mass and width of the ηc\eta_c are determined as M=(2985.9±0.7±2.1)M=(2985.9\pm0.7\pm2.1)\,MeV/c2c^2 and Γ=(33.8±1.6±4.1)\Gamma=(33.8\pm1.6\pm4.1)\,MeV.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure
