Forest Trees for Biochar and Carbon Sequestration: Production and Benefits

    Get PDF
Many tree species worldwide are suitable for making biochar (BC), with planted eucalypts in particular being very productive and extensive. Above- and below-ground carbon sequestration by Eucalyptus plantations depends on plantation management options. An intensively managed cultivar could sequester over 100 mt of C/ha at a cost of 2140/mt.BCproductionsystemsranginginsizefromsmallmobileunitstolargecentralizedfacilitiesandmanykilntechnologiesinfluencethequalityandpriceoftheBCproducedaswellastheabilitytocontrolemissions.WhileBCfromwoodhasmanyapplications,itsuseasasoilamendmentinforestplantationsisappealingasalongtermsequestrationstrategyandopportunitytogrowmorerobusttreesandincreasesurvivalrates.ResearchinFloridaUSAandelsewhereaddressesresponsesofforestandagronomiccropstowoodBCsoilamendmentswithandwithoutotherfertilizers.Incombinationwiththecarbonsequesteredthroughtreegrowth,sequestrationof2.5mt/haofwoodBCasasoilamendmentinEucalyptusplantationshasestimatedcostsrangingfrom21–40/mt. BC production systems ranging in size from small mobile units to large centralized facilities and many kiln technologies influence the quality and price of the BC produced as well as the ability to control emissions. While BC from wood has many applications, its use as a soil amendment in forest plantations is appealing as a long-term sequestration strategy and opportunity to grow more robust trees and increase survival rates. Research in Florida USA and elsewhere addresses responses of forest and agronomic crops to wood BC soil amendments with and without other fertilizers. In combination with the carbon sequestered through tree growth, sequestration of 2.5 mt/ha of wood BC as a soil amendment in Eucalyptus plantations has estimated costs ranging from 3.30–5.49/ton of C

It is difficult for laser scanning confocal microscopy to obtain high- or ultra-high-resolution laser confocal images directly, which affects the deep mining and use of the embedded information in laser confocal images and forms a technical bottleneck in the in-depth exploration of the microscopic physiological and biochemical processes of plants. The super-resolution reconstruction model (SRGAN), which is based on a generative adversarial network and super-resolution reconstruction model (SRResNet), which is based on a residual network, was used to obtain single and secondary super-resolution reconstruction images of laser confocal images of the root cells of the hyperaccumulator Solanum nigrum. Using the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity (SSIM) and mean opinion score (MOS), the models were evaluated by the image effects after reconstruction and were applied to the recognition of endocytic vesicles in Solanum nigrum root cells. The results showed that the single reconstruction and the secondary reconstruction of SRGAN and SRResNet improved the resolution of laser confocal images. PSNR, SSIM, and MOS were clearly improved, with a maximum PSNR of 47.690. The maximum increment of PSNR and SSIM of the secondary reconstruction images reached 21.7% and 2.8%, respectively, and the objective evaluation of the image quality was good. However, overall MOS was less than that of the single reconstruction, the perceptual quality was weakened, and the time cost was more than 130 times greater. The reconstruction effect of SRResNet was better than that of SRGAN. When SRGAN and SRResNet were used for the recognition of endocytic vesicles in Solanum nigrum root cells, the clarity of the reconstructed images was obviously improved, the boundary of the endocytic vesicles was clearer, and the number of identified endocytic vesicles increased from 6 to 9 and 10, respectively, and the mean fluorescence intensity was enhanced by 14.4% and 7.8%, respectively. Relevant research and achievements are of great significance for promoting the application of deep learning methods and image super-resolution reconstruction technology in laser confocal image studies

ObjectivesTo evaluate the survival and medium to long term health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with primary cervical spinal tumors in a cross-sectional study and to identify any significant associations with demographic or clinical characteristics.MethodsPatients diagnosed with primary cervical spinal tumors were retrospectively enrolled and their clinical, radiologic, and follow-up data (specifically the EQ-5D questionnaire) were collected. Univariate and multivariate Cox time-dependent regression analyses were performed to examine the significance of certain variables on overall survival. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify variables significant for overall HRQoL and each dimension of the EQ-5D.ResultsA total of 341 patients were enrolled in the study with a mean follow-up of 70 months. The diagnosis was benign in 246 cases, malignant in 84, and unconfirmed in 11. The 5-year overall survival rate was 86% and the 10-year overall survival rate was 65%. Multivariate analysis suggested that surgical treatment (P = 0.002, hazard ratio [HR] = 0.431, 95% CI. [0.254, 0.729]), benign and malignant tumors [P < 0.001, HR = 2.788, 95% CI. (1.721, 4.516)], tumor and surrounding normal tissue boundary [P = 0.010, HR = 1.950, 95% CI. (1.171, 3.249)], and spinal instability [P = 0.031, HR = 1.731, 95% CI. (1.051, 2.851)] still had significant effects on survival.ConclusionsIn this cross-sectional study, we evaluated the survival period and medium and long-term health-related quality of life of patients with primary tumors of the cervical spine, and analyzed the significant related factors of tumor clinical characteristics. Surgery, myelopathy, malignancy, spinal pain relieved by lying down or supine position, and tumor infiltration on MRI were significant predictors for overall survival. Enneking stage and age were significant predictors for HRQoL

Objective: Long-term dysregulation of energy balance is the key component of the obesity epidemic. Given the harm of central obesity and the discovery that beige cells appear within white adipose tissue (WAT), enhancing the energy-expending or “browning” ability of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) has become of therapeutic interest. In this study, we focused on the regulating role of microRNA (miRNA)-27b-3p in mice epididymal white adipose tissue (eWAT) browning. Methods: High-fat diet (HFD) induced obese mice model was constructed. Expression of miR-27b-3p and Ucp1 in eWAT was measured during the course of HFD. Through tail vein injection of antimiR-27b-3p, miR-27b-3p expression was inhibited to analyze the potential role of miR-27b-3p in fat browning and metabolism. Results: miR-27b-3p was predominantly expressed in eWAT and browning ability of eWAT in HFD induced obese mice was impaired. Inhibition of miR-27b-3p enhanced browning capacity of eWAT in mice fed an HFD and led to weight loss and insulin sensitivity improvement. Conclusions: High expression of miR-27b-3p in eWAT inhibits browning ability and leads to visceral fat accumulation. It is suggested miR-27b-3p may become a potential therapeutic option for visceral obesity and its associated diseases

Pressure-induced charge orders and their postulated coupling to magnetism in hexagonal multiferroic LuFe\u3csub\u3e2\u3c/sub\u3eO\u3csub\u3e4\u3c/sub\u3e

Hexagonal LuFe2O4 is a promising charge order (CO) driven multiferroic material with high charge and spin-ordering temperatures. The coexisting charge and spin orders on Fe3+/Fe2+ sites result in magnetoelectric behaviors, but the coupling mechanism between the charge and spin orders remains elusive. Here, by tuning external pressure, we reveal three charge-ordered phases with suggested correlation to magnetic orders in LuFe2O4: (i) a centrosymmetric incommensurate three-dimensional CO with ferrimagnetism, (ii) a non-centrosymmetric incommensurate quasi-two-dimensional CO with ferrimagnetism, and (iii) a centrosymmetric commensurate CO with antiferromagnetism. Experimental in situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements combined with density functional theory calculations suggest that the charge density redistribution caused by pressure-induced compression in the frustrated double-layer [Fe2O4] cluster is responsible for the correlated spin-charge phase transitions. The pressure-enhanced effective Coulomb interactions among Fe-Fe bonds drive the frustrated (1/3, 1/3) CO to a less frustrated (1/4, 1/4) CO, which induces the ferrimagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition. Our results not only elucidate the coupling mechanism among charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom in LuFe2O4, but also provide a new way to tune the spin-charge orders in a highly controlled manner

Direct-acting fibrin(ogen)olytic agents such as plasmin have been proved to contain effective and safety thrombolytic potential. Unfortunately, plasmin is ineffective when administered by the intravenous route because it was neutralized by plasma antiplasmin. Direct-acting fibrin(ogen)olytic agents with resistance against antiplasmin will brighten the prospect of anti-thrombosis. As reported in ‘Compendium of Materia Medica’, the insect of Eupolyphaga sinensis Walker has been used as traditional anti-thrombosis medicine without bleeding risk for several hundreds years. Currently, we have identified a fibrin(ogen)olytic protein (Eupolytin1) containing both fibrin(ogen)olytic and plasminogen-activating (PA) activities from the beetle, E. sinensis. Objectives: To investigate the role of native and recombinant eupolytin1 in fibrin(ogen)olytic and plasminogen-activating processes. Methods and Results: Using thrombus animal model, eupolytin1 was proved to contain strong and rapid thrombolytic ability and safety in vivo, which are better than that of urokinase. Most importantly, no bleeding complications were appeared even the intravenous dose up to 0.12 µmol/kg body weight (3 times of tested dose which could completely lyse experimental thrombi) in rabbits. It is the first report of thrombolytic agents containing both direct-acting fibrin(ogen)olytic and plasminogen-activating activities. Conclusions: The study identified novel thrombolytic agent with prospecting clinical potential because of its bi-functional merits containing both plasmin- and PA-like activities and unique pharmacological kinetics in vivo

Impact of Energy Productivity and Industrial Structural Change on Energy Intensity in China: Analysis Based on Provincial Panel Data

    No full text
Since 2000, China’s energy intensity has shown a fluctuating downward trend. Most existing studies have attributed the decline to technological progress, and only a few studies have recognized the role of industrial structure change. In this paper, a multi-region and multi-sector CGE (computable general equilibrium) model and a numerical simulation method are used to study how technological progress and structural transformation affected the energy intensity of 30 provincial-level regions in China from 2000 to 2019. The results show the following points. (1) The contribution of technological progress to the decline in energy intensity was the highest in the central region, followed by the western region, and was the lowest in the eastern region. (2) The progress of energy technology in the agriculture and industry sectors promoted the transition of energy consumption to the service sector, thereby reducing the overall energy intensity. This effect was the strongest in the eastern region, followed by the central region, and was the weakest in the western region. (3) The progress of energy technology in the service industry promoted the transition of energy consumption to industry and agriculture, thereby enhancing the energy intensity, and this effect was the strongest in the eastern region, followed by the western region, and the weakest in the central region. The conclusion of this paper provides a theoretical basis for realizing regional carbon peaking in sequence in China
