Scanning-gate microscopy of semiconductor nanostructures: an overview
This paper presents an overview of scanning-gate microscopy applied to the
imaging of electron transport through buried semiconductor nanostructures.
After a brief description of the technique and of its possible artifacts, we
give a summary of some of its most instructive achievements found in the
literature and we present an updated review of our own research. It focuses on
the imaging of GaInAs-based quantum rings both in the low magnetic field
Aharonov-Bohm regime and in the high-field quantum Hall regime. In all of the
given examples, we emphasize how a local-probe approach is able to shed new, or
complementary, light on transport phenomena which are usually studied by means

Antibiotic-resistant Escherichia Coli from Retail Poultry Meat with Different Antibiotic Use Claims
Background We sought to determine if the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli differed across retail poultry products and among major production categories, including organic, âraised without antibioticsâ, and conventional. Results We collected all available brands of retail chicken and turkeyâincluding conventional, âraised without antibioticâ, and organic productsâevery two weeks from January to December 2012. In total, E. coli was recovered from 91% of 546 turkey products tested and 88% of 1367 chicken products tested. The proportion of samples contaminated with E. coli was similar across all three production categories. Resistance prevalence varied by meat type and was highest among E. coli isolates from turkey for the majority of antibiotics tested. In general, production category had little effect on resistance prevalence among E. coli isolates from chicken, although resistance to gentamicin and multidrug resistance did vary. In contrast, resistance prevalence was significantly higher for 6 of the antibiotics testedâand multidrug resistanceâamong isolates from conventional turkey products when compared to those labelled organic or âraised without antibioticsâ. E. coli isolates from chicken varied strongly in resistance prevalence among different brands within each production category. Conclusion The high prevalence of resistance among E. coli isolates from conventionally-raised turkey meat suggests greater antimicrobial use in conventional turkey production as compared to âraised without antibioticsâ and organic systems. However, among E. coli from chicken meat, resistance prevalence was more strongly linked to brand than to production category, which could be caused by brand-level differences during production and/or processing, including variations in antimicrobial use
Disruption of mesoderm formation during cardiac differentiation due to developmental exposure to 13-cis-retinoic acid.
13-cis-retinoic acid (isotretinoin, INN) is an oral pharmaceutical drug used for the treatment of skin acne, and is also a known teratogen. In this study, the molecular mechanisms underlying INN-induced developmental toxicity during early cardiac differentiation were investigated using both human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) and human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). Pre-exposure of hiPSCs and hESCs to a sublethal concentration of INN did not influence cell proliferation and pluripotency. However, mesodermal differentiation was disrupted when INN was included in the medium during differentiation. Transcriptomic profiling by RNA-seq revealed that INN exposure leads to aberrant expression of genes involved in several signaling pathways that control early mesoderm differentiation, such as TGF-beta signaling. In addition, genome-wide chromatin accessibility profiling by ATAC-seq suggested that INN-exposure leads to enhanced DNA-binding of specific transcription factors (TFs), including HNF1B, SOX10 and NFIC, often in close spatial proximity to genes that are dysregulated in response to INN treatment. Altogether, these results identify potential molecular mechanisms underlying INN-induced perturbation during mesodermal differentiation in the context of cardiac development. This study further highlights the utility of human stem cells as an alternative system for investigating congenital diseases of newborns that arise as a result of maternal drug exposure during pregnancy
Long-read sequencing improves assembly of Trichinella genomes 10-fold, revealing substantial synteny between lineages diverged over 7 million years
Genome assemblies can form the basis of comparative analyses fostering insight into the evolutionary genetics of a para- siteâs pathogenicity, hostâpathogen interactions, environmental constraints and invasion biology; however, the length and complexity of many parasite genomes has hampered the development of well-resolved assemblies. In order to improve Trichinella genome assemblies, the genome of the sylvatic encapsulated species Trichinella murrelli was sequenced using third-generation, long-read technology and, using syntenic comparisons, scaffolded to a reference genome assembly of Trichinella spiralis, markedly improving both. A high-quality draft assembly for T. murrelli was achieved that totalled 63·2 Mbp, half of which was condensed into 26 contigs each longer than 571 000 bp. When compared with previous assemblies for parasites in the genus, ours required 10-fold fewer contigs, which were five times longer, on average. Better assembly across repetitive regions also enabled resolution of 8 Mbp of previously indeterminate sequence. Furthermore, syntenic comparisons identified widespread scaffold misassemblies in the T. spiralis reference genome. The two new assemblies, organized for the first time into three chromosomal scaffolds, will be valuable resources for future studies linking phenotypic traits within each species to their underlying genetic bases
Electron Temperatures of Planetary Nebulae Determined from the He I Discontinuities
We have used the He I discontinuities at 3421A to determine the electron
temperatures, designated Te(He I), for a sample of five Galactic planetary
nebulae (PNe). We compared Te(He I) with the electron temperatures derived from
the hydrogen Balmer jump at 3646A, designated Te(H I), and found that Te(He I)
are generally lower than Te(H I). There are two possible interpretations, a)
the presence of substantial He+2 zone, or b) the presence of hydrogen-deficient
cold clumps within diffuse nebulae. A series of photoionization models were
constructed to test the two scenarios. We found that the observed Te(He I)/Te(H
I) discrepancies are beyond the predictions of chemically homogeneous models.
Our modelling shows that the presence of a small amount of hydrogen-deficient
inclusions seems to be able to reproduce the observed intensities of He I
discontinuities. We stress the value of He I discontinuities in investigating
nebular physical conditions. Albeit with some observational and technical
limitations, He I discontinuities should be considered in future modelling

Using impression data to improve models of online social influence
Influence, the ability to change the beliefs and behaviors of others, is the main currency on social media. Extant studies of influence on social media, however, are limited by publicly available data that record expressions (active engagement of users with content, such as likes and comments), but neglect impressions (exposure to content, such as views) and lack âground truthâ measures of influence. To overcome these limitations, we implemented a social media simulation using an original, web-based micro-blogging platform. We propose three influence models, leveraging expressions and impressions to create a more complete picture of social influence. We demonstrate that impressions are much more important drivers of influence than expressions, and our models accurately identify the most influential accounts in our simulation. Impressions data also allow us to better understand important social media dynamics, including the emergence of small numbers of influential accounts and the formation of opinion echo chambers
Incommensurate magnetism near quantum criticality in CeNiAsO
Two phase transitions in the tetragonal strongly correlated electron system
CeNiAsO were probed by neutron scattering and zero field muon spin rotation.
For = 8.7(3) K, a second order phase transition yields an
incommensurate spin density wave with wave vector . For = 7.6(3) K, we find co-planar commensurate order with a
moment of , reduced to of the saturation moment of the
Kramers doublet ground state, which we establish by
inelastic neutron scattering. Muon spin rotation in
shows the commensurate order only exists for x 0.1 so the transition at
= 0.4(1) is from an incommensurate longitudinal spin density wave to a
paramagnetic Fermi liquid
Colonizing opportunistic pathogens (COPs): The beasts in all of us.
Colonizing opportunistic pathogens (COPs) are microbes that asymptomatically colonize the human body and, when the conditions are right, can cause infections. Their ability to persist indefinitely and to be transmitted without detection [1] gives COPs a unique epidemiology that warrants special consideration. There are examples of COPs among bacteria, fungi (e.g., Candida albicans [2]), protozoa (e.g., Blastocystis [3, 4]), and viruses (e.g., Rhinovirus [5]), but bacterial COPs are of particular relevance because of their major contribution to todayâs antibiotic resistance crisis. The COPs include a long list of notorious bacteria that live double lives as passive stowaways and virulent foes. Some of the best-known COPs include Staphylococcus aureus, extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC), Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Streptococcus pneumoniae (Table 1). Their capacity for benign coexistence with humans belies their alter egos that exact a heavy burden of human disease. For example, in the United States, ExPEC bloodstream infections kill as many as 40,000 people annually [6], but, ExPEC are also benign colonizers in the gastrointestinal tract [7]. Host factors, including age, sex, health status, anatomy, and behavior, all play profound roles in infection susceptibility and severity [8â10]. In particular, immunocompromised individuals are at excess risk for infections caused by diverse bacteria, including COPs [11, 12] and even commensals. Yet, health status is not the sole determinant of infection by COPs. For example, healthy women more frequently suffer from urinary tract infections than men because of anatomical differences, including shorter urethrae. Likewise, healthy children more commonly suffer from acute otitis media than adults due to their shorter, flatter eustachian tubes [13]
