    Reactor Fuel Fraction Information on the Antineutrino Anomaly

    We analyzed the evolution data of the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment in terms of short-baseline active-sterile neutrino oscillations taking into account the theoretical uncertainties of the reactor antineutrino fluxes. We found that oscillations are disfavored at 2.6σ2.6\sigma with respect to a suppression of the 235U^{235}\text{U} reactor antineutrino flux and at 2.5σ2.5\sigma with respect to variations of the 235U^{235}\text{U} and 239Pu^{239}\text{Pu} fluxes. On the other hand, the analysis of the rates of the short-baseline reactor neutrino experiments favor active-sterile neutrino oscillations and disfavor the suppression of the 235U^{235}\text{U} flux at 3.1σ3.1\sigma and variations of the 235U^{235}\text{U} and 239Pu^{239}\text{Pu} fluxes at 2.8σ2.8\sigma. We also found that both the Daya Bay evolution data and the global rate data are well-fitted with composite hypotheses including variations of the 235U^{235}\text{U} or 239Pu^{239}\text{Pu} fluxes in addition to active-sterile neutrino oscillations. A combined analysis of the Daya Bay evolution data and the global rate data shows a slight preference for oscillations with respect to variations of the 235U^{235}\text{U} and 239Pu^{239}\text{Pu} fluxes. However, the best fits of the combined data are given by the composite models, with a preference for the model with an enhancement of the 239Pu^{239}\text{Pu} flux and relatively large oscillations.Comment: 9 page

    Quantum Charged Spinning Particles in a Strong Magnetic Field (a Quantal Guiding Center Theory)

    A quantal guiding center theory allowing to systematically study the separation of the different time scale behaviours of a quantum charged spinning particle moving in an external inhomogeneous magnetic filed is presented. A suitable set of operators adapting to the canonical structure of the problem and generalizing the kinematical momenta and guiding center operators of a particle coupled to a homogenous magnetic filed is constructed. The Pauli Hamiltonian rewrites in this way as a power series in the magnetic length lB=c/eBl_B= \sqrt{\hbar c/eB} making the problem amenable to a perturbative analysis. The first two terms of the series are explicitly constructed. The effective adiabatic dynamics turns to be in coupling with a gauge filed and a scalar potential.     Colour stability and water-holding capacity of M. longissimus and carcass characteristics in fallow deer (Dama dama) grazed on natural pasture or fed barley

    The effects of feeding regimen on carcass characteristics, meat colour and water-holding capacity of M. longissimus were studied in 24 female fallow deer (Dama dama). All animals were farm raised; twelve were grazed on pasture and twelve were fed barley and a small amount of hay prior to slaughter. The animals were slaughtered at two occasions (during the Southern Hemisphere spring); after 19 weeks of feeding (n=12; 6 grazing and 6 barley fed animals; group 1) and after 24 weeks of feeding (n=12; 6 grazing and 6 barley fed animals; group 2). The barley/hay-fed deer had significantly higher body condition scores and carcass weights than the pasture raised group. No difference in meat ultimate pH values between the treatment groups was recorded. The meat from the pasture raised deer had significantly longer colour display life after 2 and 3 weeks of refrigerated storage (+ 2.0 ºC) in vacuum bags. There was no difference in drip loss between the two treatment groups. However, significantly lower drip losses were found in meat from the animals in group 2 compared with the ones in group 1 (P ≤ 0.001). It was concluded that the feeding regimen of the animals is an important factor that contributes to the variation in quality of fresh chilled deer meat (venison), mainly the colour stability and display life of vacuum packaged meat.Abstract in Swedish / Sammanfattning: I denna undersökning ingick 24 dovhjortshindar (Dama dama) för att studera effekterna av olika typer av foder (bete och korn) på slaktkroppskvalitet samt färg och vattenhållande förmåga i köttet (M. longissimus). Alla djur var uppfödda på en hjortfarm, 12 betade gräs och 12 utfodrades med korn och en liten mängd hö före slakt. Djuren slaktades vid två olika tillfällen (under våren på det södra halvklotet); efter 19 veckors utfodring (n=12; 6 betesdjur och 6 kornfodrade djur; grupp 1) och efter 24 veckors utfodring (n=12; 6 betesdjur och 6 kornfodrade djur; grupp 2). De dovhjortar som utfodrats med korn och hö var i bättre kondition och hade högre slaktvikter jämfört med de djur som betat gräs. Ingen skillnad i köttets pH-värde mellan de två utfodringsgrupperna kunde dock påvisas. Köttet från de betande dovhjortarna hade bättre färgstabilitet efter lagring i 2 och 3 veckor (+ 2.0 ºC) i vakuumförpackning. Det fanns ingen skillnad mellan kött från betande och korn/hö-utfodrade djur i vattenhållande förmåga. Däremot hade kött från djur i grupp 2 (slaktade efter 24 veckors utfodring) bättre vattenhållande förmåga jämfört med grupp 1 (P ≤ 0.001). Vi kunde konstatera att de olika fodertyperna påverkade kvaliteten hos färskt kyllagrat kött, framförallt färgstabiliteten hos vakuumförpackat kött

The paths exist because of the evidence you possess and the support it provides. Evidential support grounds propositional justification. The principle is mistaken. There are permissible steps you may take that others may not even if you have the very same evidence. There are permissible steps that you cannot take that others can even if your beliefs receive the same type of evidential support. Because we have to assume almost nothing about the nature of evidential support to establish these results, we should reject evidentialism

    Product rule for gauge invariant Weyl symbols and its application to the semiclassical description of guiding center motion

    We derive a product rule for gauge invariant Weyl symbols which provides a generalization of the well-known Moyal formula to the case of non-vanishing electromagnetic fields. Applying our result to the guiding center problem we expand the guiding center Hamiltonian into an asymptotic power series with respect to both Planck's constant \hbar and an adiabaticity parameter already present in the classical theory.     Semiclassical approximations for Hamiltonians with operator-valued symbols

    We consider the semiclassical limit of quantum systems with a Hamiltonian given by the Weyl quantization of an operator valued symbol. Systems composed of slow and fast degrees of freedom are of this form. Typically a small dimensionless parameter ε1\varepsilon\ll 1 controls the separation of time scales and the limit ε0\varepsilon\to 0 corresponds to an adiabatic limit, in which the slow and fast degrees of freedom decouple. At the same time ε0\varepsilon\to 0 is the semiclassical limit for the slow degrees of freedom. In this paper we show that the ε\varepsilon-dependent classical flow for the slow degrees of freedom first discovered by Littlejohn and Flynn, coming from an \epsi-dependent classical Hamilton function and an ε\varepsilon-dependent symplectic form, has a concrete mathematical and physical meaning: Based on this flow we prove a formula for equilibrium expectations, an Egorov theorem and transport of Wigner functions, thereby approximating properties of the quantum system up to errors of order ε2\varepsilon^2. In the context of Bloch electrons formal use of this classical system has triggered considerable progress in solid state physics. Hence we discuss in some detail the application of the general results to the Hofstadter model, which describes a two-dimensional gas of non-interacting electrons in a constant magnetic field in the tight-binding approximation.Comment: Final version to appear in Commun.     The Peres-Horodecki criterion of positivity under partial transpose is studied in the context of separability of bipartite continuous variable states. The partial transpose operation admits, in the continuous case, a geometric interpretation as mirror reflection in phase space. This recognition leads to uncertainty principles, stronger than the traditional ones, to be obeyed by all separable states.     Semiclassical Analysis of the Wigner 9J9J-Symbol with Small and Large Angular Momenta

    We derive a new asymptotic formula for the Wigner 9j9j-symbol, in the limit of one small and eight large angular momenta, using a novel gauge-invariant factorization for the asymptotic solution of a set of coupled wave equations. Our factorization eliminates the geometric phases completely, using gauge-invariant non-canonical coordinates, parallel transports of spinors, and quantum rotation matrices. Our derivation generalizes to higher 3nj3nj-symbols. We display without proof some new asymptotic formulas for the 12j12j-symbol and the 15j15j-symbol in the appendices. This work contributes a new asymptotic formula of the Wigner 9j9j-symbol to the quantum theory of angular momentum, and serves as an example of a new general method for deriving asymptotic formulas for 3nj3nj-symbols.Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures.
