'It's been a long hard fight for me': The Stolen Generations and Narratives of Poor Health in Australia 1883-2009

    Get PDF
Health, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), can be defined as ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.’ Using this definition of health, and others, as guiding principles, this thesis takes a thematic approach in order to demonstrate how nineteenth- and twentieth-century Australian government policies have influenced the health of Indigenous Australians today. The four key themes investigated are alienation, mental illness, alcohol abuse, and crime. By weaving the narratives taken from a number of published oral interviews, testimonies from Bringing Them Home: Report of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from their Families and Telling Our Story: A Report by the Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia (Inc) on the Removal of Aboriginal children from their families in Western Australia, and other edited collections, this thesis argues that from the perspective of numerous members of the Stolen Generations, the forcible removal of Aboriginal children and the subsequent feelings of alienation produced by removal, have had significant and on-going implications for the current state of poor health within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities

Students from the FACS 200 Interior Design course worked together to design projects that physically moved while celebrating one or more tenants of Gestalt Theory. Projects were displayed in the Jerry Falwell Library, and students from the Bell Tower, Dominoes, Pop-up Book, Flower Bouquet, Waterfall, and Pinwheel groups gave presentations on their work on November 10th, 2020 in the library. Each project began with a mind map to generate ideas, followed by: the Programming Phase to discover materials and explore interpretations of Gestalt Theory, the Schematic and Design Development Phase to create plans for the proposed ideas, and finally the Contract Administration Phase to fabricate the design and put the project on display.https://digitalcommons.liberty.edu/theoryinaction_projects2020/1006/thumbnail.jp

Inflorescence Architecture and Floral Morphology of Aratitiyopea lopezii (Xyridaceae)

    Get PDF
Aratitiyopea lopezii is a robust perennial species of Xyridaceae from seasonally saturated, mid- to high-elevation, sandstone and granite sites in northern South America. The species lacks the scapose inflorescence characteristic of Xyridaceae and, having the gestalt of a rhizomatous bromeliad, it is seemingly aberrant in the family. However, closer examination confirms features consistent with the family and the previously noted morphological similarities to Orectanthe. Details of inflorescence structure and floral morphology are presented and compared to other genera of Xyridaceae

Overcoming Today’s Ethical Challenges for Librarians and Vendors (Lively Discussion)

    Get PDF
Librarians and information professionals are often faced with situations that require judgment of ethical behavior regarding the library, patrons, and vendor relationships. Librarians encounter conflicts of interest, intellectual freedom issues, privacy concerns, and vendor and publisher relations dilemmas daily. Shrinking and flat budgets and rapidly advancing technology create further challenges to providing high-quality services while practicing ethical behavior. In this session, you will learn some of the ethical challenges that present themselves in librarianship and tactics that can be employed to overcome such challenges. In addition, you will learn how to work and build ethical relationships with vendors, how vendors are held to a high ethical standard, and different ways to evaluate and retain transparency in these relationships. The session includes a brief presentation followed by breakout groups for a lively discussion on some of the ethical issues we encounter in libraries along with Q&A from the audience
