    Top-down estimates of biomass burning emissions of black carbon in the Western United States

    We estimate biomass burning and anthropogenic emissions of black carbon (BC) in the western US for May–October 2006 by inverting surface BC concentrations from the Interagency Monitoring of PROtected Visual Environment (IMPROVE) network using a global chemical transport model. We first use active fire counts from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) to improve the spatiotemporal distributions of the biomass burning BC emissions from the Global Fire Emissions Database (GFEDv2). The adjustment primarily shifts emissions from late to middle and early summer (a 33% decrease in September–October and a 56% increase in June–August) and leads to appreciable increases in modeled surface BC concentrations in early and middle summer, especially at the 1–2 and 2–3 km altitude ranges. We then conduct analytical inversions at both 2° × 2.5° and 0.5° × 0.667° (nested over North America) horizontal resolutions. The a posteriori biomass burning BC emissions for July–September are 31.7 Gg at 2° × 2.5° (an increase by a factor of 4.7) and 19.2 Gg at 0.5° × 0.667° (an increase by a factor of 2.8). The inversion results are rather sensitive to model resolution. The a posteriori biomass burning emissions at the two model resolutions differ by a factor of ~6 in California and the Southwest and by a factor of 2 in the Pacific Northwest. The corresponding a posteriori anthropogenic BC emissions are 9.1 Gg at 2° × 2.5° (a decrease of 48%) and 11.2 Gg at 0.5° × 0.667° (a decrease of 36%). Simulated surface BC concentrations with the a posteriori emissions capture the observed major fire episodes at most sites and the substantial enhancements at the 1–2 and 2–3 km altitude ranges. The a posteriori emissions also lead to large bias reductions (by ~30% on average at both model resolutions) in modeled surface BC concentrations and significantly better agreement with observations (increases in Taylor skill scores of 95% at 2° × 2.5° and 42 % at 0.5° × 0.667°)

    Anatomy of the Soft-Photon Approximation in Hadron-Hadron Bremsstrahlung

    A modified Low procedure for constructing soft-photon amplitudes has been used to derive two general soft-photon amplitudes, a two-s-two-t special amplitude MμTsTtsM^{TsTts}_{\mu} and a two-u-two-t special amplitude MμTuTtsM^{TuTts}_{\mu}, where s, t and u are the Mandelstam variables. MμTsTtsM^{TsTts}_{\mu} depends only on the elastic T-matrix evaluated at four sets of (s,t) fixed by the requirement that the amplitude be free of derivatives (\partialT/\partials and /or \partialT/t\partial t). Likewise MμTuTtsM^{TuTts}_{\mu} depends only on the elastic T-matrix evaluated at four sets of (u,t). In deriving these amplitudes, we impose the condition that MμTsTtsM^{TsTts}_{\mu} and MμTuTtsM^{TuTts}_{\mu} reduce to MˉμTsTts\bar{M}^{TsTts}_{\mu} and MˉμTuTts\bar{M}^{TuTts}_{\mu}, respectively, their tree level approximations. The amplitude MˉμTsTts\bar{M}^{TsTts}_{\mu} represents photon emission from a sum of one-particle t-channel exchange diagrams and one-particle s-channel exchange diagrams, while the amplitude MˉμTuTts\bar{M}^{TuTts} _{\mu} represents photon emission from a sum of one-particle t-channel exchange diagrams and one-particle u-channel exchange diagrams. The precise expressions for MˉμTsTts\bar{M}^{TsTts}_{\mu} and MˉμTuTts\bar{M}^{TuTts}_{\mu} are determined by using the radiation decomposition identities of Brodsky and Brown. We point out that it is theoretically impossible to describe all bremsstrahlung processes by using only a single class of soft-photon amplitudes. At least two different classes are required: the amplitudes which depend on s and t or the amplitudes which depend on u and t. When resonance effects are important, the amplitude MμTsTtsM^{TsTts}_{\mu}, not MμLow(st)M^{Low(st)}_{\mu}, should be used. For processes with strong u-channel exchange effects, the amplitude MμTuTtsM^{TuTts}_{\mu} should be the first choice.Comment: 49 pages report # LA-UR-92-270

    Comparison of radiation and cloud parameters derived from satellite and aircraft measurements during FIRE 2 cirrus IFO

    Meteorological satellite instrument pixel sizes are often much greater than the individual cloud elements in a given scene. Partially cloud-filled pixels can be misinterpreted in many analysis schemes because the techniques usually assume that all of the cloudy pixels are cloud filled. Coincident Landsat and Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) data and degraded-resolution Landsat data were used to study the effects of both sensor resolution and analysis techniques on satellite-derived cloud parameters. While extremely valuable for advancing the understanding of these effects, these previous studies were relatively limited in the number of cloud conditions that were observed and by the limited viewing and illumination conditions. During the First ISCCP Regional Experiment (FIRE) Phase 2 (13 Nov. - 7 Dec. 1991), the NASA ER-2 made several flights over a wide range of cloud fields and backgrounds with several high resolution sensors useful for a variety of purposes including serving as ground truth for satellite-based cloud retrievals.     Superoxide is a mediator of an altruistic aging program in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    Aging is believed to be a nonadaptive process that escapes the force of natural selection. Here, we challenge this dogma by showing that yeast laboratory strains and strains isolated from grapes undergo an age- and pH-dependent death with features of mammalian programmed cell death (apoptosis). After 90–99% of the population dies, a small mutant subpopulation uses the nutrients released by dead cells to grow. This adaptive regrowth is inversely correlated with protection against superoxide toxicity and life span and is associated with elevated age-dependent release of nutrients and increased mutation frequency. Computational simulations confirm that premature aging together with a relatively high mutation frequency can result in a major advantage in adaptation to changing environments. These results suggest that under conditions that model natural environments, yeast organisms undergo an altruistic and premature aging and death program, mediated in part by superoxide. The role of similar pathways in the regulation of longevity in organisms ranging from yeast to mice raises the possibility that mammals may also undergo programmed aging

    Virtual-pion and two-photon production in pp scattering

    Two-photon production in pp scattering is proposed as a means of studying virtual-pion emission. Such a process is complementary to real-pion emission in pp scattering. The virtual-pion signal is embedded in a background of double-photon bremsstrahlung. We have developed a model to describe this background process and show that in certain parts of phase space the virtual-pion signal gives significant contribution. In addition, through interference with the two-photon bremsstrahlung background, one can determine the relative phase of the virtual-pion process

    Dynamical model for Pion - Nucleon Bremsstrahlung

    A dynamical model based on effective Lagrangians is proposed to describe the bremsstrahlung reaction πNπNγ \pi N \to \pi N \gamma at low energies. The Δ(1232)\Delta(1232) degrees of freedom are incorporated in a way consistent with both, electromagnetic gauge invariance and invariance under contact transformations. The model also includes the initial and final state rescattering of hadrons via a T-matrix with off-shell effects. The πNγ\pi N \gamma differential cross sections are calculated using three different T-matrix models and the results are compared with the soft photon approximation, and with experimental data.     Delta--Excitation and Exchange Corrections for NN--Bremsstrahlung

    The role of the relativistic amplitudes for a number of O(k){\cal O}(k) processes usually neglected in potential model calculations of NN--bremsstrahlung is investigated. In particular, we consider the Δ\Delta--excitation pole contributions related to the one--pion and one--rho exchange and in addition include the exchange contributions induced by the radiative ω,ρπγ\omega,\,\rho \to \pi \gamma decays. The contributions are calculated from relativistic Born amplitudes fitted to Δ\Delta--production and absorption data in the energy range up to 1 GeV and then used to supplement potential model and soft photon calculations for nucleon--nucleon bremsstrahlung.
