The Threatened Status of Steller Sea Lions, Eumetopias jubatus, under the Endangered Species Act: Effects on Alaska Groundfish Fisheries Management

In April 1990, the Steller sea lion, Eumetopias jubatus, was listed as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act by emergency action. Competitive interactions with the billion-dollar Alaska commercial groundfish fisheries have been suggested as one of the possible contributing factors to the Steller sea lion population decline. Since the listing, fisheries managers have attempted to address the potential impacts of the groundfish fisheries on Steller sea lion recovery. In this paper, we review pertinent Federal legislation, biological information on the Steller sea lion decline, changes in the Alaska trawl fishery for walleye pollock, Theragra chalcogramma, since the late 1970's, andpossible interactions between fisheries and sea lions. Using three cases, we illustrate how the listing of Steller sea lions has affected Alaska groundfish fisheries through: I) actions taken at the time of listing designed to limit the potential for directhuman-related sea lion mortality, 2) actions addressing spatial and temporal separation of fisheries from sea lions, and 3) introduction of risk-adverse stock assessment methodologies and Steller sea lion conservation considerations directly in the annual quota-setting process. This discussion shows some of the ways that North Pacific groundfish resource managers have begun to explicitly consider the conservation ofmarine mammal and other nontarget species

An improved lion strategy for the lion and man problem

In this paper, a novel lion strategy for David Gale's lion and man problem is proposed. The devised approach enhances a popular strategy proposed by Sgall, which relies on the computation of a suitable "center". The key idea of the new strategy is to update the center at each move, instead of computing it once and for all at the beginning of the game. Convergence of the proposed lion strategy is proven and an upper bound on the game length is derived, which dominates the existing bounds.Comment: Preprint submitted to IEEE Control Systems Letter

Conservation of the Lion: Preventing an Africa without the African Lion

    Get PDF
The African lion (Panthera leo) population is diminishing rapidly, approximately 43 percent since 1993. The species is currently listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). With numerous threats to current populations including human conflict, prey depletion, and habitat loss, the African lion is in danger of becoming endangered, or even critically endangered, in the near future. Ex-situ conservation is a proposed method of restoring populations. My research at the African Lion and Environmental Research Trust (ALERT) in Zambia focused on correlations of boldness with natural behaviors and sociality to help further understand individual personality in hopes of connecting it with success after reintroduction. Six audio playbacks were used to assess boldness personality traits of the twelve individuals of the Dambwa pride in Livingstone, Zambia. Social interactions and daily activity budgets were also recorded. Spearman’s correlations were conducted in order to examine correlations between boldness, sociality, and average daily activity. I observed some correlations between social behavior and boldness, and noticed that the Dambwa pride behaved similarly to a wild lion pride. These results provide encouraging evidence for the use of ex-situ conservation with the African lion

Corporate restructuring and its wealth effects: the case of Lion Group

    Get PDF
This case study evolves around four announcements related to a specific corporate restructuring proposal. The primary reason for the corporate restructuring is to restructure the debt of six companies: Lion Industries(LICB), Silverstone (SCB), Amsteel Corp Berhad (ACB), Lion Corporation(LCB), Lion Forest Industries (LFI), and Lion Diversified Holding Berhad(LDH). The track record of the companies revealed that these companies have been heavily levered causing them to be financially risky and therefore, highly sensitive to any economic shocks, let alone a fatal financial typhoon like the 1997 economic crisis. As at the end of the study period on June 30, 2003, that is, more than three years after the initial announcement of the proposed corporate restructuring, the plan has yet to be completed. Nonetheless, the present study had managed to produce some interesting results. By applying the common event-study approach, the results indicated that information about the restructuring plan has been significantly conveyed to the market in each restructuring announcement. Generally, the market regards all announcements in event window (-1,+1) unfavourably

The goals to be achieved from the implementation of this study was to determine the effect of brand image Lion Star products to consumers buying interest in PD. Aneka Warna. This research is a survey method. The population used in the study are consumers PD. Aneka Warna who interested in buying plastic products Lion Star brand. The sample of 100 respondents. The sampling technique used was nonprobability sampling. Specifically, the technique used is purposive sampling technique is the determination of the specific considerations when viewed people found it suitable as a source of data. The process of data analysis used in the studies using SPSS version 18. Based on the results of hypothesis testing and simple regression analysis of test results can be deduced product brand image and Lion Star has a significant influence on consumer buying interest, because it has a significance level of less than 0,05. The coefficient of determination of 50,6%, while the remaining ( 100 % - 50.6 % = 49.4 % ) described other factors not examined writer

A small intruder. A Medieval marble winged lion from Ravello

An image of a 12th century marble winged lion was provocatively included among the slides accompanying a lecture by the author at a recent conference at the American Academy in Rome to illustrate Umberto Scerrato’s work on Islamic archaeology and art history in Italy. The lion, in fact, was never published by Scerrato, but it and a winged bull, both once featuring as ornaments on the “Moresque Fountain” in Ravello (originally from a medieval building most likely from Ravello itself), are the subject of this brief article. They are of undeniable Islamic taste

Diablo Canyon power plant site ecological study Quarterly Report no. 6; October 1 - December 31, 1974

During the period October 1 - December 31, 1974, a total of six permanent subtidal stations and ten random intertidal stations were surveyed. Red tides and rough seas limited both the commerical abalone and sea urchin fishery activities. Most activity was concentrated between Diablo Cove and Pecho Rock. Divers, however, did work urchin beds as far north as Lion Rock. Sea otter counts have remained relatively stable with almost all individuals being observed north of Lion Rock. Fourteen random fishing stations were completed. Low catch rates reflected fishing success in areas with a heavy brown algae surface canopy. (12pp.
