Origin and Environment of the Tonganoxie Sandstone in Northeastern Kansas

Study of lowermost deposits of the Virgilian Series (upper Pennsylvanian) in Leavenworth, Wyandotte, and Douglas Counties, northeastern Kansas, indicates localized development of sediment classed as belonging to the Tonganoxie sandstone member of the Stranger formation, which is the lowermost subdivision of the Douglas group in this region. The Tonganoxie rests disconformably on eroded upper Missourian strata consisting of evenly bedded shales and limestones. The Tonganoxie sandstone mainly occupies and fills a wide, shallow, southwest-trending valley carved in the pre-Virgilian rocks. This valley, named Tonganoxie Valley, has a maximum width of nearly 20 miles and depth of 90 to 100 feet. Four types of deposits are recognized in the Tonganoxie sandstone: (a) basal conglomerate, (b) sandstone, (c) shale, and (d) coal. The lithologic characters are stratigraphic relations of each of these types are described and interpreted. The filling of the Tonganoxie Valley is judged to have been accomplished by a southwest-flowing low-gradient river, named Tonganoxie River. In part, erosion and deposition in this area are concluded to have been contemporaneous

FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE IN MEAT AND POULTRY MANUFACTURING AND WHOLESALING: AN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

The financial performance of meat and poultry manufacturing and wholesaling firms is examined for the period from 1970 to 1986. Measures of liquidity, solvency, profitability, cash generation, and efficiency reported in the Robert Morris Associates Annual Statement Studies are used to examine relative performance across the different industries. The results suggest a similar performance in the wholesaling and manufacturing industries across the period in terms of liquidity. Profitability levels are similar for meat and poultry firms, although the poultry firms show a higher level of variability across the period. It appears that poultry firms leveraged themselves relatively more than did meat firms during the period. In terms of cash generation and efficiency the meat manufacturing industry performs slightly better than the other industries.Agricultural Finance,

Urban and regional land use analysis: CARETS and census cities experiment package

The author has identified the following significant results. Successful tentative calibration permits computer programs to be written to convert Skylab thermal tapes into line-printed graymaps showing actual surface radiation temperature distributions at the time of imaging. The calibrations will be further checked when atmospheric soundings are available. Success of Skylab calibration suggests that satellite are feasible platforms for thermal scanning and provide a much broader geographical field of view than is possible with airborne platforms

EXTRACT (SEE PDF FOR FULL ABSTRACT): The variability of mean annual streamflow over the western United States is described and related to indices of large scale atmospheric circulation over the Pacific Ocean and western U.S. Principal component analysis reveal [sic] four statistically significant modes of streamflow variability across the region

The author has identified the following significant results. Level 2 land use mapping from high altitude aircraft photography at a scale of 1:100,000 required production of a photomosaic mapping base for each of the 48, 50 x 50 km sheets, and the interpretation and coding of land use polygons on drafting film overlays. To enhance the value of the land use sheets, a series of overlays was compiled, showing cultural features, county boundaries and census tracts, surface geology, and drainage basins. In producing level 1 land use maps from LANDSAT imagery, at a scale of 1:250,000 drafting film was directly overlaid on LANDSAT color composite transparencies. Numerous areas of change were identified, but extensive areas of false changes were also noted

TagSNP transferability and relative loss of variability prediction from HapMap to an admixed population

Abstract

Background

The application of a subset of single nucleotide polymorphisms, the tagSNPs, can be useful in capturing untyped SNPs information in a genomic region. TagSNP transferability from the HapMap dataset to admixed populations is of uncertain value due population structure, admixture, drift and recombination effects. In this work an empirical dataset from a Brazilian admixed sample was evaluated against the HapMap population to measure tagSNP transferability and the relative loss of variability prediction.

Methods

The transferability study was carried out using SNPs dispersed over four genomic regions: the PTPN22, HMGCR, VDR and CETP genes. Variability coverage and the prediction accuracy for tagSNPs in the selected genomic regions of HapMap phase II were computed using a prediction accuracy algorithm. Transferability of tagSNPs and relative loss of prediction were evaluated according to the difference between the Brazilian sample and the pooled and single HapMap population estimates.

Results

Each population presented different levels of prediction per gene. On average, the Brazilian (BRA) sample displayed a lower power of prediction when compared to HapMap and the pooled sample. There was a relative loss of prediction for BRA when using single HapMap populations, but a pooled HapMap dataset generated minor loss of variability prediction and lower standard deviations, except at the VDR locus at which loss was minor using CEU tagSNPs.

Conclusion

Studies that involve tagSNP selection for an admixed population should not be generally correlated with any specific HapMap population and can be better represented with a pooled dataset in most cases.</p
