    Veterinary treatment in organic husbandry

    The organic farming regulations put emphasis on the preservation of animal health by prophylaxis in the agriculture. The No 5 of the regulation EC 1804/99 (EC organic regulation) Appendix I B defines the veterinary treatments in organic animal husbandry. The veterinarian can use any medicine, which is effective for the indication and the animal species. If possible, effective homeopathics, phytotherapeutics or the like should have priority. Problems of implementing the EC organic regulation into the daily farm practice arise mostly from the doubling of the withdrawal period and the restriction of the numbers of treatments. The strict ban on prophylactic treatments is not mentioned any longer in the new regulation 834/2007, which shall apply as from 1st January 2009. Clarification of the guidelines for animal treatments in organic farming seems to be useful for farmers, veterinarians and boards of control

    Antiferroquadrupolar Order in the Magnetic Semiconductor TmTe

    The physical properties of the antiferroquadrupolar state occurring in TmTe below TQ=1.8 K have been studied using neutron diffraction in applied magnetic fields. A field-induced antiferromagnetic component k = (1/2,1/2,1/2) is observed and, from its magnitude and direction for different orientations of H, an O(2,2) quadrupole order parameter is inferred. Measurements below TN ~= 0.5 K reveal that the magnetic structure is canted, in agreement with theoretical predictions for in-plane antiferromagnetism.     Interpreting experimental bounds on D^0 - \bar{D^0} mixing in the presence of CP violation

    We analyse the most recent experimental data regarding D^0 - \bar{D^0} mixing, allowing for CP violation. We focus on the dispersive part of the mixing amplitude, M^D_{12}, which is sensitive to new physics contributions. We obtain a constraint on the mixing amplitude: |M^D_{12}| < 6.2\times 10^{-11} MeV at 95% C.L. . This constraint is weaker by a factor of about three than the one which is obtained when no CP violation is assumed.Comment: 9 pages, revtex4; One reference updated, one reference added, footnote 3 correcte

    The Extended Shapes of Galactic Satellites

    We are exploring the extended stellar distributions of Galactic satellite galaxies and globular clusters. For seven objects studied thus far, the observed profile departs from a King function at large r, revealing a ``break population'' of stars. In our sample, the relative density of the ``break'' correlates to the inferred M/L of these objects. We discuss opposing hypotheses for this trend: (1) Higher M/L objects harbor more extended dark matter halos that support secondary, bound, stellar ``halos''. (2) The extended populations around dwarf spheroidals (and some clusters) consist of unbound, extratidal debris from their parent objects, which are undergoing various degrees of tidal disruption. In this scenario, higher M/L ratios reflect higher degrees of virial non-equilibrium in the parent objects, thus invalidating a precept underlying the use of core radial velocities to obtain masses.Comment: 8 pages, including 2 figures Yale Cosmology Workshop: The Shapes of Galaxies and Their Halo

    Are We Seeing Magnetic Axis Reorientation in the Crab and Vela Pulsars?

    Variation in the angle α\alpha between a pulsar's rotational and magnetic axes would change the torque and spin-down rate. We show that sudden increases in α\alpha, coincident with glitches, could be responsible for the persistent increases in spin-down rate that follow glitches in the Crab pulsar. Moreover, changes in α\alpha at a rate similar to that inferred for the Crab pulsar account naturally for the very low braking index of the Vela pulsar. If α\alpha increases with time, all pulsar ages obtained from the conventional braking model are underestimates. Decoupling of the neutron star liquid interior from the external torque cannot account for Vela's low braking index.     New Physics and CP Violation in Singly Cabibbo Suppressed D Decays

    We analyze various theoretical aspects of CP violation in singly Cabibbo suppressed (SCS) D-meson decays, such as D→KK,ππD \to K K,\pi \pi. In particular, we explore the possibility that CP asymmetries will be measured close to the present level of experimental sensitivity of O(10−2)O(10^{-2}). Such measurements would signal new physics. We make the following points: (i) The mechanism at work in neutral D decays could be indirect or direct CP violation (or both). (ii) One can experimentally distinguish between these possibilities. (iii) If the dominant CP violation is indirect, then there are clear predictions for other modes. (iv) Tree-level direct CP violation in various known models is constrained to be much smaller than 10−210^{-2}. (v) SCS decays, unlike Cabibbo favored or doubly Cabibbo suppressed decays, are sensitive to new contributions from QCD penguin operators and especially from chromomagnetic dipole operators. This point is illustrated with supersymmetric gluino-squark loops, which can yield direct CP violating effects of O(10−2)O(10^{-2}).Comment: 36 pages, 5 figure

    Search for T Violation in Charm Meson Decays

    Using data from the FOCUS (E831) experiment, we have searched for T violation in charm meson decays using the four-body decay channels D0→K−K+π−π+D^0 \to K^-K^+\pi^-\pi^+, D+→KS0K+π−π+D^+ \to K^0_SK^+\pi^-\pi^+, and Ds+→KS0K+π−π+D^+_s \to K^0_SK^+\pi^-\pi^+. The T violation asymmetry is obtained using triple-product correlations and assuming the validity of the CPT theorem. We find the asymmetry values to be ATviol(D0)=0.010±0.057(stat.)±0.037(syst.)A_Tviol (D^0) = 0.010 \pm 0.057(stat.) \pm 0.037(syst.), ATviol(D+)=0.023±0.062(stat.)±0.022(syst.)A_Tviol (D^+) = 0.023 \pm 0.062(stat.) \pm 0.022(syst.), and ATviol(Ds+)=−0.036±0.067(stat.)±0.023(syst.)A_Tviol (D^+_s) = -0.036 \pm 0.067(stat.) \pm 0.023(syst.). Each measurement is consistent with no T violation. New measurements of the CP asymmetries for some of these decay modes are also presented.Comment: 17 pages,6 figures,submitted to Phys.Lett.
