Analysis of the Police Response to Mass Shootings in the United States between 1966 and 2016

This study examines 186 mass shooting events for the protocol police followed upon arrival atthe scene. In 124 of these cases, the police arrived on scene after the shooter had stoppedshooting, either because the shooter committed suicide, fled the scene or was detained by peoplein the area who were not currently police officers. Of the 186, only 62 cases included policearriving on scene and following a response protocol, either engagement or perimeter. Thenumber of casualties varied for each incident and type of police response. These cases wereanalyzed to determine if one type of response protocol was more effective in decreasing thenumber of casualties resulting from a shooting. Analysis of the data showed signs that suggestedthere are more casualties when the perimeter protocol is followed, but these results remain statistically insignificant. However, indirect support for the effectiveness of the engagement protocol reducing the number of casualties included a significant correlation between the shooting duration and the total number of casualties

Preparation and Performance of William Bolcom’s Cabaret Songs

The Cabaret Songs Complete by William Bolcom and Arnold Weinstein are true gems amongst the vast genre of twentieth century American art song. These songs are particularly unique because they meld the world of classical singing with modern styles, such as jazz, pop, and blues, as only William Bolcom can do. The songs are musically and dramatically challenging, making them less common in the traditional college student repertoire. Studying and performing these pieces has been a challenging and rewarding experience for me. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a resource for the preparation of a cabaret show, specifically featuring these songs. This process includes musical and textual study, style choices, and dramatic development. These elements will be presented through discussion of methods and the final performance. A total of sixteen songs will be used in this thesis

Die Zukunft gehoert dem Ingeniuer: Herman Soergel\u27s Attempt to Engineer Europe\u27s Salvation

Herman Sörgel devised a plan, beginning in 1927, to usher in a new era of peace and prosperity for the whole of Europe. Atlantropa was his answer to the perceived threats that the European people faced from international competition, overpopulation, and lack of resources. The plan would have resulted in the lowering of the Mediterranean Sea and the ultimate creation of one continent comprised of the former Europe and Africa. Though the plan was never implemented, it poses a fascinating model through which historians may reconsider the time period between the end of the First and Second World Wars. This thesis examines some historical socio-political movements through the lens of Sörgel’s megaproject. Original publications from Herman Sörgel himself as well as those of two notable Atlantropa scholars, Alexander Gall and Wolfgang Voigt, explain in great detail the technical and sociological aspects of the plan. Additionally, theories from Jeffrey Herf, Richard von Coudenhove-Kalergi, and Dina Brandt aid in the understanding of the man who attempted to engineer Europe out of crisis. The following analysis reveals the difficulty in placing Herman Sörgel into any singular political or social movement in his time. Though he espoused some of the same rhetoric as that of the National Socialists and pan-European movements alike, he failed to conform to any particular group. The unwavering obsession with his project consumed all of Sörgel’s energies until his death in 1952. Though all-but-forgotten, the project offers an uncommon means by which to view a tumultuous time in Europe

The Development of a Diagnostic Test for Screening Regents Chemistry Students

The purpose of this project has been to develop a test that can be used to identify those students whose levels of abstract reasoning and mathematical skills are significantly below those necessary for success in Regents chemistry. A measure of the association between the pilot test scores Regents examination scores was obtained by degree and of the computing the sample coefficient of determination. The problems on the test were patterned after Dr. Anton Lawson\u27s test and the Toledo Chemistry Placement Examination Math Skills subset. Due to the limited amount of time that a chemistry instructor can devote to such testing, the final version of the test was limited to 14 problems

Knowledge-based Practices for Managing the Outsourced Project

The management of outsourced information systems development (ISD) projects is both complex and problematic due to the type of outsourcing arrangement, the nature of the work that is outsourced, and the relationship between the vendor and client. Moreover, outsourced projects are conducted in an unstructured environment with divergent organizational expectations. Existing project management techniques and methodologies may not be sufficient to resolve such complexity, and project management needs to encompass knowledge-based aspects of management. Knowledge-based practices (KBPs) are directed to exploring, understanding and making sense of complex situations, sharing that understanding and using that understanding to inform actions to resolve that complexity. These KBPs need to be explicitly included in an expanded repertoire of project management techniques. In this paper we explore how KBPs facilitate the conduct execution of an outsourced ISD projects through a case study in a large Australian federal government department. Our study shows how KBPs operationalize and formalise a knowledge-based approach to project management for the successful delivery and management of outsourced projects. Significantly our study shows that KBPs are not only used within the project boundary but are also applied outside of the project boundaries boundary to address project complexity at a broader, strategic organisational level

Job ready or future-ready? The role of IS research in PG IS curriculum

Research on IS curriculum focus on how IS curriculum objectives are consistent with what ICT/IS employers’ demand. Emerging IS trends are the motivation for research on updating IS curriculum. Of particular concern is that most scholarship on IS curriculum is focused on undergraduate studies, with little literature on post-graduate curriculum. There is a gap in the current literature that trending research issues, as articulated in IS journals, have not been explicitly linked to the development of IS curriculum. Consequently, how the AIS/ACM curriculum models reflect current IS research issues has not been explicitly investigated. We would argue that the link between research and curriculum is particularly relevant to post-graduate studies. We conducted a review of recently published papers in the IS basket of eight journals and listed key subject terms that emerged from our review and compare the subject terms with the IS competency realm proposed in IS2020

From Doing to Thinking in Meteorological Forecasting: Changing Work Practice Paradigms with Knowledge Management

This research aims to improve meteorological decision making through the application of knowledge manage- ment to the forecasting process. The aim of the research is not to solve the problems of forecasting but to provide appropriate support to enable forecasters to spend more time reflecting on the meteorological situation. To this end, we are engaged in change of the IT paradigm in this problem domain from the one based on scientific normative models to intelligent support. This change of paradigm allows forecasters not only perform the task but also to consistently share knowledge and learn from their collective experience.
