    Sexology, Popular Science and Queer History in Anders als die Andern (Different from the Others)

Available on open access from Wiley via the DOI in this recordIn 1919, the same as year Anders als die Andern (Different from the Others) was released in cinemas all over Germany, the Berlin sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld exclaimed that ‘those who work to educate people about sexual matters not only have the right, but the duty to use film, in addition to the spoken and written word’. Film apparently offered an alternative way to transmit ideas, but what could the new medium of film achieve that other forms of dissemination, such as lectures, public talks, monographs, scientific journals or popular science books could not? In this article, I investigate how sexology looks different once we understand it in the context of the institution of cinema and the medium of film. In doing so, I examine the contributions, but also the challenges, risks and difficulties of this new medium for the sexological project.Wellcome Trus

    The potency of the butterfly: The reception of Richard B. Goldschmidt’s animal experiments in German sexology around 1920

In the 1910s, the German-Jewish geneticist Richard B. Goldschmidt conducted experiments on the moth Lymantria dispar, and discovered individuals that were no longer clearly identifiable as male or female. When he published an article tentatively arguing that his research on ‘intersex butterflies’ could be used to inform concurrent debates about human homosexuality, he triggered a flurry of responses from Berlin-based sexologists. In this article, I examine how a number of well-known sexologists affiliated with Magnus Hirschfeld, his Scientific-Humanitarian Committee, and later his Institute of Sexology attempted to incorporate Goldschmidt’s experiments into their sexological work between 1917 and 1923. Intersex butterflies were used to discuss issues at the heart of German sexology: the legal debate about the criminalisation of homosexuality under paragraph 175; the scientific methodology of sexology, caught between psychiatric, biological, and sociological approaches to the study of sexual and gender diversity; and the status of sexology as natural science, able to contribute knowledge about the sexual Konstitution of the organism. This article thus shows that butterfly experiments function as important and politically charged evidence for a discussion at the heart of the sexological project of those involved in the founding of the Institute of Sexology: the question of the nature and naturalness of homosexuality (and sexual intermediacy more broadly) and its political consequences. In doing so, this article makes a case for paying attention to non-human actors in the history of sexology.Wellcome Trus

    Queer livability: German sexual sciences and life writing

A new language to express possibilities of gender and sexuality emerged at the turn of the twentieth century, from Sigmund Freud's theories of homosexuality in Vienna to Magnus Hirschfeld's "third sex" in Berlin. Together, they provided a language of sex and sexuality that is still recognizable today. Queer Livability: German Sexual Sciences and Life Writing shows that individual voices of trans and queer writers had a significant impact on the production of knowledge about gender and sexuality during this time and introduces lesser known texts to a new readership. It shows the remarkable power of queer life writing in imagining and creating the possibilities of a livable life in the face of restrictive legal, medical, and social frameworks.     Queer Ecology in Loïe Fuller’s Modernist Dance and Magnus Hirschfeld’s Die Transvestiten

Available on open access from Duke University Press via the DOI in this recordDance orients the performer’s body toward both environment and pleasure, yet the intersection of environmental and sexual attunement in dance practice remains an underexplored area of research. This article considers how environmental and sexual readings of dance practice can be brought together by proposing a queer ecological approach to modernist dance. Drawing on research in dance studies, feminist and queer science studies, and sexology studies, the article examines the work of Loïe Fuller, an early pioneer of modernist dance, to show how Fuller’s work engages with themes of both sex and nature and consequently introduces environmentally attuned thinking to early twentieth century sexual knowledge production. By examining the parallels and divergences between Magnus Hirschfeld’s early twentieth-century sexological writing about “transvestitism” and Loïe Fuller’s modernist dance, via the copycat dancer Henry Cyril Paget, this article shows that both dance and sexology rethought the relationship between sex and nature by grappling, to different extents, with a queer vision of nature, where nature loses its explanatory force and moral authority. This reveals the importance of nature and the nonhuman in the production of modern concepts of sex, gender, and sexuality and the important role that dance can play in illuminating the intersection of sex and nature.Wellcome Trus

    Formation and control of nitrogenous DBPs from Western Australian source waters: Investigating the impacts of high nitrogen and bromide concentrations

    We studied the formation of four nitrogenous DBPs (N-DBPs) classes (haloacetonitriles, halonitromethanes, haloacetamides, and N-nitrosamines), as well as trihalomethanes and total organic halogen (TOX), after chlorination or chloramination of source waters. We also evaluated the relative and additive toxicity of N-DBPs and water treatment options for minimisation of N-DBPs. The formation of halonitromethanes, haloacetamides, and N-nitrosamines was higher after chloramination and positively correlated with dissolved organic nitrogen or total nitrogen. N-DBPs were major contributors to the toxicity of both chlorinated and chloraminated waters. The strong correlation between bromide concentration and the overall calculated DBP additive toxicity for both chlorinated and chloraminated source waters demonstrated that formation of brominated haloacetonitriles was the main contributor to toxicity. Ozone–biological activated carbon treatment was not effective in removing N-DBP precursors. The occurrence and formation of N-DBPs should be investigated on a case-by-case basis, especially where advanced water treatment processes are being considered to minimise their formation in drinking waters, and where chloramination is used for final disinfection

    Organic haloamines in chlorine-based disinfected water systems: A critical review

    This paper is a critical review of current knowledge of organic chloramines in water systems, including their formation, stability, toxicity, analytical methods for detection, and their impact on drinking water treatment and quality. The term organic chloramines may refer to any halogenated organic compounds measured as part of combined chlorine (the difference between the measured free and total chlorine concentrations), and may include N-chloramines, N-chloramino acids, N-chloraldimines and N-chloramides. Organic chloramines can form when dissolved organic nitrogen or dissolved organic carbon react with either free chlorine or inorganic chloramines. They are potentially harmful to humans and may exist as an intermediate for other disinfection by-products. However, little information is available on the formation or occurrence of organic chloramines in water due to a number of challenges. One of the biggest challenges for the identification and quantification of organic chloramines in water systems is the lack of appropriate analytical methods. In addition, many of the organic chloramines that form during disinfection are unstable, which results in difficulties in sampling and detection. To date research has focussed on the study of organic monochloramines. However, given that breakpoint chlorination is commonly undertaken in water treatment systems, the formation of organic dichloramines should also be considered. Organic chloramines can be formed from many different precursors and pathways. Therefore, studying the occurrence of their precursors in water systems would enable better prediction and management of their formation

    A controversial role of neutrophils in tuberculosis infection pathogenesis

    Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be an important and unresolved medical problem. About a quarter of mankind is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and about 5–10% of these people eventually develop TB. Macrophages and CD4+ T cells are considered the key cells providing defense against TB infection. The role of neutrophils in TB is less well defined. Neutrophils are short-lived granulocytes among first migrate into the infectious lung tissue and phagocy tose mycobacteria. On the one hand, there is evidence for protective role of neutrophils in TB released via anti-microbial peptides inhibiting mycobacterial growth, up-regulation of CD4+ T-cell activation, and dendritic cell migration in the lymph nodes. On the other hand, infection of genetically TB susceptible animals leads to an overwhelming lung neutrophil inflammation, development of necrotic granulomata, and a rapid death. Neutrophils act directly or indirectly on mycobacteria by different oxidative or other reactions including neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) formation. Phagocytosis of mycobacteria by neutrophils is accompanied by the production of pro-inflammatory factors, thus making neutrophils active participants of inflammation in all stages of the infectious process. Finally, neutrophils die by apoptosis or necrosis. Necrosis of neutrophils, which is activated by reactive oxygen species, also prolongs the inflammation. In this way, there is strong evidence that neutrophils are the cells involved in the transition of infection to the terminal stage, participating in lung tissue destruction. Although neutrophils evolutionary developed many ways to resist pathogens, it is likely, that neutrophils do not possess sufficient anti-mycobactericidal capacities due to the development of many adaptations allowing mycobacteria to survive inside the neutrophils. Neutrophils effectively phagocytose but poorly kill mycobacteria, thus hiding bacilli from more efficient killers, macrophages, and playing the role of the “Trojan Horse”. In this review, we summarize the data on the involvement of neutrophils in TB inflammation. We discuss their ambiguous role in pathogenesis which depends upon mycobacterial virulence, host genetics, dynamics of migration to inflammatory foci, and persistence during initial and chronic stages of the infectious process

    Justice in collective payments for ecosystem services : a qualitative meta-analysis

    CB-PES programs are often portrayed as an innovative mechanism incentivizing more sustainable land use practice, while contributing to social and economic development of communities. However, there is very lacking or mixed evidence and theory about the longterm impacts of CB-PES, and the contextual factors which may affect these outcomes (Brownson et al 2019). This research contributes to the literature on long-term impacts of CBPES by carrying out a qualitative meta-analysis of empirical studies that report on distributive, procedural and recognition justice outcomes of such programs. Additionally, this research examines how specific attributes of community and market-based governance forms for conservation, both present in CB-PES, may have contributed to social justice outcomes. Although results show outcomes were significantly different between communities and programs, this study's analysis outlines explicit tensions and synergies between justice outcomes and specific community or market features of CB-PES programs
