    OBJECTIVES:To develop and validate a Taiwanese version of the Health Enhancement Lifestyle Profile (HELP-T) for community-dwelling older Taiwanese adults (≥ 55 years). METHODS:The original Health Enhancement Lifestyle Profile (HELP) is a 56-item self-report questionnaire measuring various aspects of health-related lifestyles in older adults. The standard cultural-adaptation procedure was used for questionnaire translation and modification. A field test was conducted for culturally specific item selection, rating-scale analysis, and psychometric validation of the HELP-T in a sample of 274 community-dwelling older adults via classical test theory. RESULTS:The 59-item HELP-T is culturally adapted from the original 56-item HELP. The original 6-point rating scale was modified to a 3-point scale for easy use by Taiwanese older adults. The HELP-T had good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.82). The test-retest reliability for the total score was high (0.92), and moderate to high (range: 0.57-0.92) for subscales. The construct validity was supported by the significant correlations between each subscale and the total score (Spearman's rho = 0.41-0.67, p < 0.0001) and by the ability of the scores to significantly discriminate between participants with different levels of self-rated health (p = 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS:The HELP-T is a suitable clinical tool for assessing and monitoring lifestyle risk factors, establishing client-centered lifestyle intervention goals, and determining the outcomes of lifestyle interventions

    Intraluminal duodenal diverticulum in a child concomitant with an entrapped coin and a duodenal polyp

    SummaryIntraluminal duodenal diverticulum (IDD) is a rare congenital anomaly. We present the report of an 8-year-old girl who had an entrapped coin in an IDD for 3 years that was associated with recurrent pancreatitis. Besides, a duodenoduodenal intussusception was found during the course of investigation and it seemed that a concomitant duodenal polyp contributed to the development of the intussusception. In view of the rarity of each of the aforementioned situations and the improbability of these conditions occurring together, this unusual and possibly unique case is therefore reported here

    Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns among Escherichia coli urinary isolates from community-onset health care-associated urinary tract infection

    Urinary tract infection (UTI) is traditionally classified as community-acquired (CA) and hospital-acquired (HA). Community-onset health care-associated (HCA) infection is a new category that has gained increasing attention. The study aimed to compare the disk susceptibility of nonrepetitive Escherichia coli urinary isolates from HCA-UTI (n = 100) with that of E. coli isolates from CA-UTI (n = 85) and HA-UTI (n = 106). We found that the susceptibility pattern of HCA-UTI E. coli isolates was similar to that of HA-UTI E. coli isolates, but significantly different from that of CA-UTI E. coli isolates. In particular, the proportion of extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing isolates was significantly higher in HCA-UTI than that in CA-UTI (30.0% vs. 3.5%, p < 0.001). We recommend that when treating HCA-UTI, it is necessary to take urine cultures for susceptibility testing to guide definite antibiotic therapy

    Cyber-victimization and perceived depression: Serial mediation of self-esteem and learned-helplessness

    Literature suggests that the perception of being cyber-victimized is a stronger predictor of depression symptoms than the perception of being victimized offline, and that learned-helplessness can explain the prediction of perceived cyber-victimization on perceived depression. Nevertheless, other studies suggested that the link between perceived cyber-victimized and learned-helplessness is weakened by state self-esteem. This study investigates the double mediation effect of state self-esteem and learned-helplessness on the relationship between perceived cyber-victimized and perceived depression. 104 participants between 18 and 30 years of age (63 females, 41 males, 1 prefer not to say) have been recruited through haphazard sampling method to fill in the Cyberbullying Victimization Scale, State Self-Esteem Scale, Learned Helplessness Scale, and Beck’s Depression Inventory. Our findings suggest that the double mediation effect occurs. As a conclusion, our findings suggested that cyberbullied social media users will only fall into perceived depression when their state self-esteem is also negatively affected by their perception of being cyberbullied, up to the point where they learn that they are helpless. Further implication are discussed at the end of the paper

    Cloning and Expression Analysis of a PISTILLATA Homologous Gene from Pineapple (Ananas comosus L. Merr)

    PISTILLATA (PI)-like genes are crucial regulators of flowering in angiosperms. A homologue of PI, designated as AcPI (Genbank accession number HQ717796), was isolated from pineapple cultivar Comte de Paris by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). The cDNA sequence of AcPI is 907 bp in length and contains an open reading frame of 594 bp, which encodes a protein of 197 amino acids. The molecular weight was 2.29 kDa and the isoelectric point was 9.28. The alignment showed that AcPI had a high identity with CsPIC2 (78.6%), AoPI (77.4%), OrcPI (75.7%) and HPI2 (72.4%). Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analyses in different tissues showed that the expression pattern of AcPI was different from the B-class genes in eudicots. AcPI was expressed in all the tissues investigated. The expression level was very low in fruit stems, bracts, leaves and sepals, high in petals and carpels, and moderate in apical meristems, flesh and stamens. The qRT-PCR analyses in different stages indicated that the expression of AcPI reached the highest level at 40 days after flower inducement, when the multiple fruit and floral organs were forming. It proved the important role of AcPI in floral organs and fruit development. The 35S::AcPI transgenic Arabidopsis plants flowered earlier and had more inflorescences or branches than wild type plants
