Children, youth and the mobile phone In its short life, a surprisingly large literature on the use of mobile communication among children and teens has been written. Indeed, in recent years there has hardly been a conference or a collection of readings that did not include work in this area. The iconic status of the mobile telephone among children and teens has been one of the big surprises associated with this form of communication. While originally conceived as a way to allow business people to interact, mobile telephony has become, perhaps more than anything else, a phenomenon of teens and young people. Reports from Japan (Hashimoto, 2002; Ito, 2005), the Philippines (Ellwood-Clayton, 2005) the broader Asian context (Castells et al. , 2007; Kim, 2004), Norway (Ling, 1999, 2000, 2001a,b; Ling and Yttri, 2002; Skog and Jamtøy, 2002), the UK (Green and Smith, 2002), Finland (Rautiainen and Kasesniemi, 2000; Nurmela, 2003; ..

“Must-Read” Mobile Technology Research: A Field Guide

    Get PDF
As research on mobile technologies has grown dramatically, and the field has matured, there is a need for a reference work to offer an accessible guide to this research; a “rough guide,” or map, to its contours. There is the need for the key works by students, researchers coming fresh to the area, and those wishing to explore the area more deeply. In the spirit of the Routledge Major Works enterprise, for this first time this collection brings together in one easy-to-access set, the essential, “must-read” articles on one of the great technologies of our time. This set aims to bring together the dispersed work across the many disciplines that study mobile technologies. It aims to put them into historical, intellectual, and international context. As such we hope that it will provide a valuable research tool and pedagogic resource. To achieve this, we have aimed to integrate foundational texts and diverse perspectives, as well as the most significant and pioneering new material, to provide researchers, teachers, students, and practitioners alike with the best-known as well as the most crucial yet overlooked materials on this vital topic. In this introductory chapter, we explain how we have approached the difficult task of selecting papers for this Major Works: Mobile Technologies collection. Before we do discuss our concepts and procedures for selection, let’s step back to provide critical context. What is the field of mobile technologies research? How did it begin, and how has it evolved? While still quite a spring chicken amidst much older and venerable academic fields, what are its traditions, theoretical approaches and methods? What are its foundational and orienting concepts? Who are its cast of characters, and key figures, institutions, and research outlets? And what are its notable twists and turns, epistemic breaks and ruptures? What are the significant new developments worth watching, and what can one read, and engage with, to understand where research is heading

The Use of Mobile Phones Among Trishaw Operators in Myanmar

This article examines use of mobile phones by trishaw (rickshaw) operators in the newly emerging techno-landscape of Myanmar. Trishaw operators transport people and goods in a physically demanding job that often earns them as little as US2perday.Spanningtheperiodbeforeandafterthewidespreadcommercializationofmobilephonesinthecountry,thisresearchdrawsfrominterviewswithtrishawoperatorsinseverallocations.Withcommercialization,thepriceofamobilesubscriptionfellfromoverUS2 per day. Spanning the period before and after the widespread commercialization of mobile phones in the country, this research draws from interviews with trishaw operators in several locations. With commercialization, the price of a mobile subscription fell from over US1,500 to US$1.50, making it affordable to groups that heretofore have not had access. We find that the trishaw sector is changing because of this. The mobile phone strengthens ties with important clients, meaning a more stable income, but also an enhanced importance/power for these customers. Operators who have not adopted mobile phones, usually because of poverty, age, or a lack of interest, will likely have fewer business opportunities

How useful is the Rehearsal Scale for Children – Chinese in measuring emotional rehearsal in pre-adolescents of different ages?

The Rehearsal Scale for Children – Chinese (RSC-C) measures thepropensity to rehearse emotionally taxing experiences in children, however, the initial development of the scale has overlooked thevalidity of the scale for pre-adolescents of different ages whosecognitive development may differ considerably. Therefore, the aim ofthis study was to explore the internal validity of RSC-C for the differentage groups (aged 6-7, 8-9 and 10-12) across an age range of 6 to12years. Confirmatory factor analysis based on the original factorstructure suggested that the internal validity of the RSC-C is poor andthe scale was modified for the age groups concerned. Test-retest reliability for the modified scales was stronger for the younger age groups and moderate concurrent validity against the Chinese Trait Anxiety Scale for Children (CTAS-C) was established. No gender differences were found. The results highlight the importance of testing the validity of a psychometric instrument across different age ranges, given the potential for significant developmental differences. Thecurrent study also provided a new set of psychometrically sound RSC-C for the different age groups to promote greater understanding of the role of emotional rehearsal and psychological stress in physical and psychological well-being in young children
